Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Through June 4th, Amazon is selling Volumes 1, 2, and 3 of the James Bond Blu-ray boxsets for $24.99 each. This 64% reduction is not the lowest retail markdown for which Amazon has offered the three collections - their lowest price point was $24.49 - but it is markedly cheaper than the $45.99 price Amazon sold these sets for yesterday.

Media Blasters released news today of their upcoming Destroy All Monsters and Godzilla vs. Megalon Blu-rays. No further details are known about special features or what versions of the films will be included on the Blu-rays, and while the release date is still unknown for Godzilla vs. Megalon, Destroy All Monsters is rumored to arrive in October.

Purple Noon and Arizona Dream Blu-rays in September

British distributors Optimum Home Entertainment have revealed that they will release on Blu-ray René Clément's Plein soleil a.k.a Purple Noon (1960) and Emir Kusturica's Arizona Dream (1993). We have also been able to confirm that both titles will appear via the Studio Canal Collection. Street date is September 5th.

Independent U.S. distributors Cult Epics have revealed that they are preparing a Blu-ray release of Agustí Villaronga's highly controversial Tras el cristal a.k.a In a Glass Cage (1987), starring Günter Meisner, David Sust, Marisa Paredes, and Gisèle Echevarría. The Blu-ray will be out in October.

For a limited time, Amazon.com is offering the Blu-ray Combo Pack of Joel and Ethan Coen's True Grit for 54% off its $39.99 MSRP. Amazon's new pre-order price of $18.49 now almost matches Best Buy's $18.00 True Grit sale. No word on how long Amazon will maintain this reduced deal, so act soon before the price increases (Amazon previously sold the Blu-ray for $24.99).

On September 20th, French distributors Gaumont will release Xavier Durringer's La conquête a.k.a. The Conquest (2011), starring Denis Podalydès (Une affaire d'état), Florence Pernel (Trois couleurs: Bleu), Bernard Le Coq (Caché), and Samuel Labarthe (Les égarés). Earlier this month, the film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.

British distributors Eureka Entertainment have revealed that they are preparing a Dual Format Edition of acclaimed Japanese director Shôhei Imamura's The Ballad of Narayama (1983), starring Ken Ogata (Vengeance is Mine), Sumiko Sakamoto (The Pornographers), and Tonpei Hidari (Oar). The exact release date, special features, and region coding status for this release are yet to be determined.

House M.D.: Season Seven Blu-ray

From Universal Home Entertainment, all 23 episodes of "House M.D.: Season Seven" will make their Blu-ray debut on August 30th, 2011. Starring two-time Golden Globe-winner Hugh Laurie (Monsters Vs. Aliens), "House" follows Dr. Gregory House and his team at Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital as they work to solve some of the medical community's toughest cases. This five-disc Blu-ray set contains over three hours of bonus features.

Sony Ship 14.3m PS3s, 5.6m Blu-ray Players and Recorders

Sony have posted the details of their financial year ending March 31st 2011 which shows they have missed their target for PS3s and Blu-ray players by 700,000 and 400,000 respectively. Sony as a whole lost $3.2 billion for the year due to a one off accounting charge of $4.4 billion.

In its initial week of release The Mechanic bowed on top of the Blu-ray sales chart with a solid 47% of total package media sales coming from the HD format. Mechanic, a box office disappointment with a domestic total of just under $30 million, managed to displace four time Blu-ray weekly sales champ Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 from the top sales spot .

The Dutch box office hit Winter in Wartime arrives on Blu-ray this summer. An adaptation of the popular novel, Winter in Wartime deals with a young man's coming-of-age during the end of World War II. Since its release in 2008, the film was the Netherlands' selection for Best Foreign Film at the 2009 Academy Awards. Its Blu-ray/DVD combo pack will street on July 26th, 2011.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment are set to release on Blu-ray Xavier Beauvois' Des hommes et des dieux a.k.a Of Gods and Men (2010). Last year, the film won the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury at the Cannes Film Festival and was selected to represent France in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 83rd Academy Awards. On July 12th, 2011, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release Insidious on Blu-ray. From Saw creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell, Insidious is a horror film about a husband and wife trying to rid their son of evil spirits. The film stars Patrick Wilson (Watchmen) and Rose Byrne (Sunshine) and was co-produced by Oren Peli, the director of Paranormal Activity.

Just three months after its U.S. theatrical release, Warner Home Entertainment will bring Arthur to Blu-ray. A remake of the classic Dudley Moore comedy, the 2011 version stars Russell Brand (Forgetting Sarah Marshall) as a drunken billionaire who must choose between true love or money and features a supporting cast that includes Helen Mirren (Red), Greta Gerwig (Greenberg), Jennifer Garner (Juno), and Nick Nolte (Affliction). Arthur streets on July 15th.

Fifteen years after its UK debut, Peter Jackson's Heavenly Creatures (1994) is heading back to the big screen, in a digitally remastered print, courtesy of Peccadillo Pictures. On September 12th, the British distributors will also release the film on Blu-ray. Technical specs and region coding status for this release are unknown at the moment.
