Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Commando, Predator, and Butch Cassidy Announced for Japan

Fox Home Entertainment Japan has announced that they will bring three action classics to Blu-ray on January 18th. They includes two Arnold Schwarzenegger classics with 'Commando' and 'Predator', as well as the Paul Newman film 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid'. The first two will be delivered on BD-25s, with 'Butch Cassidy' receiving BD-50 treatment. No other specs have been announced at this time.

Macrovision Buys BD+ Technology

Macrovision has acquired certain technologies from Cryptography Research Inc., including the Self-Protecting Digital Content (SPDC) technology used to form BD+ Blu-ray anti-piracy protection. Cryptography Research will in return receive $45M in cash plus Macrovision stock (based on performance milestones).

Damages Coming to Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the breakout TV show 'Damages' for Blu-ray on January 29th, day-and-date with the DVD release. No specs or special features have been announced at this time, but it should get a similar treatment as other Sony TV releases such as 'Rescue Me'.

Becoming Jane Announced for Blu-ray

Buena Vista Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring 'Becoming Jane' to Blu-ray on February 12th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Extras include an audio commentary, deleted scenes, a pop-up trivia track, and a "Discovering the Real Jane Austin" featurette. No specs have been announced at this time.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring 'Daddy Day Camp' to Blu-ray on January 29th, day-and-date with the DVD release (according to Home Media Magazine). No specs have been announced at this time, but extras include a behind-the-scenes featurette on the making of the film.

Gone Baby Gone Comes to Blu-ray

Buena Vista Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring 'Gone Baby Gone' to Blu-ray on February 12th. The directorial debut of Ben Affleck will be presented in 1.85:1 1080p video with PCM 5.1 24-bit audio. Extras include Going Home (a behind-the-scenes documentary), Capturing Authenticity, Casting 'Gone Bay Gone', deleted scenes, and audio commentary.

BCI Plans Double-Features for Blu-ray

BCI Home Entertainment has announced three double-feature releases for Blu-ray, all scheduled for release on January 8th. They include the previously announced 'Night of the Werewolf/Vengeance of the Zombie' double feature, 'Sister Streetfighter/Sister Streetfighter II' double feature, and 'Killing Machine/Shogun's Ninja' double feature. Extras have not been announced at this time.

3:10 to Yuma Detailed

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has released the specs for their upcoming Blu-ray release of '3:10 to Yuma', due to hit store shelves on January 8th. Video will be encoded at 1080p and feature a 7.1 PCM soundtrack. In addition to the numerous Blu-ray exclusive featurettes, a PIP track will be included in the release. Content is King at CES

At CES Unveiled, the annual pre-CES press event held in New York, Sony Pictures Television announced that they will be yet another content provider who plans to have a display for the 2008 CES. This, in combination with previous announcements regarding keynote speeches and seminars, shows that content will be a main focus of the upcoming trade-show.

The Brave One Announced for Blu-ray

Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring Jodie Foster's 'The Brave One' to Blu-ray on February 5th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Specs have yet to be announced, but you can expect the typical VC-1 encode as will all other Warner titles. No extras have been announced at this time.

Raimi Loves Blu

Sound and Vision recently interviewed Sam Raimi, director of the Spider-man trilogy (as well as the Evil Dead trilogy), and discussed his impressions regarding working with Blu-ray. He commented on how the Blu-ray presentation of 'Spider-man 3' allowed viewers to see detail they likely were unable to see during the theatrical presentation.

PS3 Price Drop Boosts Blu-ray Install Base

Sony has announced that the recent price cut for the PS3, as well as the introduction of the less expensive 40GB model, has tripled sales of the Blu-ray based game console. The result has been a dramatic increase to the Blu-ray install base with over 5 million units sold worldwide since the console launched late last year.

PLDS Introduces Blu-ray Reader

Philips Lite-On Digital Solutions (PLDS) will be introducing their DH-401S BD-ROM to the market next month, making it the first PC drive to read (and not write) all three major optical disc technologies (CD, DVD, and Blu-ray). The drive will be able to read Blu-ray discs at 4x and will support an SATA interface. PLDS will retail the unit at £125 (no US announcement has been made).

Resident Evil: Extinction Announced

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring 'Resident Evil: Extinction' to Blu-ray on January 1st, day-and-date with the DVD release. 'Extinction' joins the previously announced 'Resident Evil' and 'Resident Evil Box Set' on the same date. Extras will include a "Beyond Raccoon City" featurette, 11 deleted scenes, audio commentary, "Under the Umbrella" PIP experience, and a sneak-peak of 'Resident Evil: Degeneration'.

Girls Gone Blu

Mantra Films plans to bring the next "Girls Gone Wild" title, 'Girls Gone Wild: Sexiest Moment Ever 2' to Blu-ray on December 11th. This will be the first high definition release in the "Girls Gone Wild" series, though it is unknown if the footage was shot in high definition video or film. More information will hopefully be made public as we get closer to the street date.

Blu-ray Festival: Day 2 - Panasonic Hollywood Labs

On Tuesday, October 30, Panasonic Hollywood Labs hosted the editorial staff of Blu-ray.com as part of the Blu-ray Festival. Panasonic Hollywood Labs is an immaculate facility located within Universal City just outside of Hollywood. For the last decade or so, Panasonic Hollywood Labs (PHL) has been at the forefront of home video technology. Initially developed as a one-stop-shop for DVD encoding and authoring, PHL has become one of the most influential video production houses in existence. They have been responsible for many of the technological achievements over the years that have improved the DVD experience. Essentially, Panasonic Hollywood Labs develops content and produces the encodes that wind up on your DVDs and Blu-ray discs. This would prove to be an eye-opening visit.

Blu-ray Festival: Blu-ray Lounge

Sony Pictures capped off the first days events by hosting the "Blu-ray Lounge" - a cocktail party where journalists and top Sony executives could mingle and discuss Blu-ray in a casual environment. The room was filled with LCD displays showing off some recent Sony Blu-ray releases and also some titles which are scheduled to arrive soon.

MGM Goes Into Hibernation

MGM Home Entertainment has confirmed that the upcoming Blu-ray releases of 'Ronin' and 'Red Dawn' have been delayed indefinitely, citing "marketing reasons". So what's left for 2007? As of now, the only MGM release left is the Christian Bale film 'Rescue Dawn', but we're going to keep a close eye on that title as the release date approaches.

No Reservations Comes to Blu-ray

Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring the Catherine Zeta-Jones film 'No Reservations' will come to Blu-ray on February 12th. Coming on a BD-25, video will be presented in 2.41:1 1080p and audio will come in 5.1 Dolby Digital. Extras include two Food Network special: "Emeril Live Show" and "Unwrapped".

Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring 'The Invasion' to Blu-ray on January 8th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Presented on a BD-50, video will be presented using VC-1 at 1.85:1 1080p accompanied by a 5.1 Dolby TrueHD track. Extras include the "We've Been Snatched Before" documentary and three featurettes.

Spider-Man 3 Sells 130K in Six Days on Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has revealed that the Blu-ray release of 'Spider-Man 3' sold 130,000 copies the first six days at retail, 15,000 more copies than the Transformers HD DVD was reported to have sold its first week on store shelves. Having shipped 400,000 copies to retailers, this represents a 30% sell-off for the title.

Sony Announces Specs for Legend of Zorro

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced specifications and supplemental features for their upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Legend of Zorro', due to hit store shelves on December 11th. Video will be presented in 1080p AVC, and audio will come in both English and French 24-bit Dolby TrueHD tracks. Extras include all supplementals from the special edition DVD, including commentary, featurettes, deleted scenes, and storyboard deconstructions.

More IMAX Films for 2008

Image Entertainment has announced that they will bring two IMAX titles, 'Dolphins' and 'The Living Sea' to Blu-ray on April 8th. Similar to their previous releases, video will be provided at 1.85:1 instead of the IMAX aspect ratio, and in stunning 1080p. No supplementals or other specs have been announced at this time.

Warner Delays Terminator 3

Warner Home Video has revealed that they will delay the Blu-ray release of 'Terminator 3' until December 18th. The title, which was originally scheduled for release on December 4th, will be the first Blu-ray title to feature their In-Movie Experience (IME). No reason was given for the delay, but features or specs remain unchanged since the title was initially announced.
