Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Michael Bay: Microsoft is the Real Problem

Outspoken director Michael Bay has once again posted a note on his website in regards to the format war, this time calling out Microsoft. He pointed out, similar to what many insiders have been saying for a while, that Microsoft was only trying to destroy both formats in order to usher in digital downloads. Mr. Bay called Blu-ray the "superior" format and hinted that Microsoft was behind the now infamous Paramount payoff.

Celine Dion Delayed

Sony BMG has announced that the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Celine Dion: A New Day... Live in Las Vegas' has been delayed. No reason was given for the delay from the original December 11th release date, but it is expected to hit store shelves sometime next year. No specs or supplementals are expected to be affected by the delay.

Blu-ray Sells 2.7M Players in North America

Coming off of huge Blu-ray sales during the early holiday shopping season (which includes Black Friday), market research now shows that consumer have purchased 2.7 million Blu-ray players in the North America region as of November 24th. Additionally, US sales of Blu-ray titles topped 4 million units in November, taking just over two months to achieve the new milestone.

Blockbuster, Video Ezy Pledge Continued Blu-ray Support

Franchise Entertainment Group, owners of Blockbuster and Video Ezy in Australia, said that they are only supporting Blu-ray (and not rival HD DVD) for high definition content. Citing HD DVD's failure to capture market penetration and disregard for the territory as the main issues, the rival format was said to have "missed the boat" in Australia.

Disney Adds Support for D-Box

Disney has signed a deal with D-Box which will allow the studio to add D-Box Motion Code support to an unspecified number of titles. As you may have noticed, many Fox titles have utilized this technology to control specialized seating which reacts to action on the screen. The first Disney Blu-ray to use the technology will be 'The Game Plan' which is set to be released on January 22nd.

Dispatch Concert Coming to Blu-ray

The indie rock band Dispatch will give fans a chance to see their 3-concert reunion tour in stunning high definition when 'Dispatch: Zimbabwe - Live at Madison Square Garden' gets released for Blu-ray on January 29th. The disc will contain the complete 16-track, 2 hour concert and include four bonus tracks, a documentary, band interviews, and an outtake real.

We Own the Night Coming to Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring 'We Own the Night' to Blu-ray on February 12th, day-and-date with the DVD release. No specs have been announced at this time, but extras include audio commentary, and the featurettes "Police Action: Filming Cops, Cars, and Chaos" and "A Moment in Crime: Creating Late 80's Brooklyn".

Bonnie and Clyde Announced for Blu-ray

Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring the 1967 classic 'Bonnie and Clyde' to Blu-ray on March 25th, day-and-date with the new DVD release. Special features include deleted scenes, wardrobe tests, a making of documentary, and a special from The History Channel. No technical specs have been announced at this time.

Afro Samurai Comes to Blu-ray in Japan

Pony Canyon has announced that they will bring the Samuel L. Jackson anime 'Afro Samurai' to Blu-ray on February 20th in Japan. Video will presented in 1080p AVC, and audio will come in both Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD Master Audio. The feature will be presented in its "theatrical" version, and not the Director's cut that the DVD will receive.

Blu-ray Still Pursuing China

A news blurb on Warren Communications News website reports that the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) is continuing to court China with regards to adopting the Blu-ray standard. The BDA is proposing to include China in the current Blu-ray spec, rather than develop a new China-only spec as rival HD DVD has.

Fox Delays Independence Day

Fox Home Entertainment has revealed that they are delaying the Blu-ray release of 'Independence Day' due to technical issues. The disc is experiencing playback issues on 5% of Blu-ray players, so instead of having negative consumer feedback (similar to what they experienced with 'Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer'), they will wait until all issues are resolved.

Blu-ray Gets Black Friday Win

Nielson VideoScan data for last week reports that Blu-ray has topped its high definition rival for yet another week - this time with a very impressive 72.6% market share. The sales data includes titles sold on Black Friday - the day after Thanksgiving characterized by deep discounts and enormous amounts of consumer spending.

WinDVD Gets Profile v1.1 Certification

Corel has announced that they have been awarded BD-Video Profile 1.1 certification by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) for their WinDVD Blu-ray playback software. As the primary Blu-ray playback software for PCs, WinDVD has been a popular choice for Blu-ray owners who use home theater PCs to view their movies.

Fox Announces Wall Street for February

Fox Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Oliver Stone classic 'Wall Street' to Blu-ray on February 5th. Video will be presented in 1080p AVC with an accompanying 5.1 DTS Master Audio lossless audio track. The Blu-ray release will receive all the extras from the 20th Anniversary DVD, including an introduction and audio commentary from Oliver Stone, the "Greed is Good" documentary, and deleted scenes.

Disney France Slips 2008 Plans

The Blu-ray website for Buena Vista Home Entertainment France has an interesting list of titles set to be released in 2008. Most notably is the Disney classic 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit?'. Also displayed on the website are covers for 'Starsky and Hutch', 'The Recruit', 'March of the Penguins', and 'Coyote Ugly'.

Across the Universe Announced for Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will release 'Across the Universe' for Blu-ray on February 5th, day-and-date with the DVD release. The film, while having a mediocre showing at the box office, has become somewhat of a cult hit due to the extensive use of Beatles songs throughout the film. No specs or special features have been announced at this time.

PS3 is Linked to Quality Home Entertainment

In a recent interview with Brent Butterworth, editor-in-chief of luxury publication Robb Report Home Entertainment, he indicated that video game systems are rapidly becoming the center of home theater setups due to their ability to play CDs, DVDs, and in the case of PS3, Blu-ray discs. He commented, "Even the most extravagant custom home theater systems now often, if not usually, feature video games."

Blu-ray Owns 73% of HD Market in Europe

The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) has announced that they have sold the one millionth Blu-ray title in Europe. Since the format was launched, Blu-ray has gained 73% of the high definition market over its rival HD DVD. The BDA also announced that 20 million PS3 games have been shipped to Europe, all making use of Blu-ray technology.

Forworld Electronics Receives Blu-ray Orders from Europe

Forworld Electronics (formerly Fun Yuan Electronics Development) has received an order from Alba (a leading distributor of consumer electronics in Europe) for Blu-ray players. Monthly shipments of 4,000 units are planned to begin in January of next year. No further information regarding the price or features of the player is available at this time.

Saw IV Being Prepared for Blu-ray Release

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the latest in the "Saw" franchise, 'Saw IV' to Blu-ray on January 22nd, day-and-date with the DVD release. Specs have yet to be announced for the release, which will be presented in the unrated director's cut. Also, no supplemental material has been announced at this time, but we should hear more soon as the release date quickly approaches.

The Jane Austen Book Club Announced for Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring 'The Jane Austen Book Club' to Blu-ray on February 5th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Extras include a behind-the-scenes featurette, a "Life of Jane Austen" featurette, deleted scenes, and cast and crew commentary. No specs have been announced at this time.

Appleseed Ex Machina Comes to Blu-ray

Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring 'Appleseed Ex Machina' to Blu-ray on March 11th. 'Appleseed Ex Machina' is the sequel to popular anime 'Appleseed'. No specs have been announced at this time, but you can expect the usual VC-1 treatment from Warner with standard definition features ported from the DVD.

Blu-ray.com Folding@Home Team Breaks Into Top 200

The Blu-ray.com Folding@Home team has become one of the Top 200 teams in the shared-computing project, only one month after breaking into the Top 250. When not using their PS3s to watch Blu-ray movies, many forum members run the Folding@Home program preloaded on the machine. While you don't need a PS3 to contribute (the software works on any Windows, OSX, or Linux system), the awesome computing power of the console has contributed greatly to the team effort. Currently, the team has completed 22,287 work units, amassing 6,215,711 points for the program.

Perfect Blue Announced for Blu-ray

Geneon Entertainment Japan has announced that they will release 'Perfect Blue' exclusively for Blu-ray in Japan on February 22nd, day-and-date with the new DVD release. Besides having one of the best names for a Blu-ray title, 'Perfect Blue' comes from the same people who brought us 'Paprika', which is set to be released tomorrow on Blu-ray in the US.

Initial D Comes to Blu-ray

Tai Seng has announced that they will bring the Andrew Lau film 'Initial D' exclusively to Blu-ray on January 22nd. No official specs have been announced at this time, but we do know that it will be presented in 1080p. The film, based on the popular manga of the same name, comes from the same director who brought us 'Infernal Affairs'.

Less Green; More Blu - New Amazon Sale

Amazon has launched yet another Blu-ray sale, this time the deal is "Buy Two Blu-ray Discs and Receive a Third for Free". Compared to the previous BOGO sales this might not sound as compelling, but here's the twist. This sale includes titles from Warner, Lionsgate and Starz, which weren't offered in the previous sales. There's also a nice selection of Disney titles available. All in all, there are 103 titles to choose from, including blockbusters such as 300.

Stringer Reaffirms Sony's Commitment to Blu-ray

In an exclusive interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Sir Howard Stringer, CEO of Sony, reaffirmed Sony's commitment to Blu-ray. Citing comments made by Blu-ray partners, he stressed that the technical superiority of Blu-ray makes it the "better format", and even mentioned possible future 3D implementations.

Toei Plans Blu-ray Release

Toei International has announced that they are planning to release 'Clannad' for Blu-ray on March 7th in Japan. This will be the first Blu-ray release for the studio, and adds yet another strong content provider to the Japanese Blu-ray market. The release will make use of a new HD master which is said to have a "beautiful image which cannot be reproduced with DVD".
