Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Warner Details and Dates The Wizard of Oz Blu-ray

Warner Home Video has announced the technical specs and special features for the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'The Wizard of Oz: 70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector's Edition', which is due to hit store shelves on September 29th, day-and- date with the DVD release. The two-disc set will be released in limited edition numbered packaging, and also feature a digital copy of the film.

New Line Home Entertainment in conjunction with Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring the Zac Efron and Matthew Perry film '17 Again' to Blu-ray on August 11th, day-and-date with the DVD release. The three-disc set, which will include a DVD and Digital copy along with the BD-25, will be presented in 1080p VC-1 accompanied by a 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtrack.

Flame & Citron BD in the UK

Metrodome Video has announced that it will release 'Flame & Citron' (Flammen & Citronen) on Blu-ray in the UK on June 29. This Danish movie is based on the real story of two assassins who operated for the Danish resistance during World War II. It stars Mads Mikkelsen ('Casino Royale') and Thure Lindhardt ('Angels and Demons'). No audio/video specifications are available.

The Boat That Rocked Sails to BD in UK and Germany

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced the Blu-ray release of the movie 'The Boat That Rocked' in Germany and the UK for August 27 and September 21, respectively. This ensemble comedy about a pirate radio in mid-1960s Britain will be released theatrically in the US on August 28. Video will be 2.35:1 1080p accompanied by a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

Dollhouse Comic-Con Exclusive Gets Detailed

Our friends over at TV Shows on DVD have received some information regarding the Comic-Con Exclusive version of Joss Whedon's 'Dollhouse: Season One' Blu-ray release. These numbered sets will be limited to 2,500 units and feature a Comic-Con exclusive faceplate and a lenticular letter from Joss.

CSI Season 9 Blu-ray in September

Our good friends over at TV Shows on DVD have the scoop on the upcoming release of 'CSI: Crime Scene Investigation – The Ninth Season', which will be released on Blu-ray on September 1, day-and-date with the DVD (which is a first for this TV series). The BD edition will consist of six discs. Video will be high-definition 1.78:1 accompanied by a 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

Rob Thomas Live at Red Rocks BD Coming Up

In an early announcement to retailers, it has been revealed that Koch Entertainment will release 'Rob Thomas: Live at Red Rocks' on Blu-ray on September 29. The disc features the concert Thomas gave in 2006 at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre during his Something to Be tour, featuring hits from his former band Matchbox Twenty and also from his first solo album.

Weinstein Gave Up Inglourious Basterds BD Rights

Deadline Hollywood Daily reports that The Weinstein Company, beset by financial problems, is scrambling to secure the money to promote the theatrical release of Quentin Tarantino's 'Inglourious Basterds'. More importantly for us, Universal is now cited as having the domestic home video rights to the movie (including Blu-ray), much to the chagrin of Genius Products.

DTS-MA for European Pioneer Players Too

Just like their US counterparts, the European Pioneer Blu-ray player models BDP-LX71, BDP-LX08 und BDP-51FD can now decode DTS-HD with a firmware upgrade. Version 1.32, just released, enables the decoding of DTS-HD audio and the output of the decoded signal, digitally over HDMI or in analog form over the 7.1 multichannel audio outputs.

Pioneer BDP-05FD and BDP-51FD Get DTS-MA Decoding

The long-awaited support of DTS-HD audio on Pioneer Blu-ray player models BDP-05FD and BDP-51FD has finally arrived. Fimware version 1.32, just released, enables the decoding of DTS-HD audio and the output of the decoded signal, digitally over HDMI or in analog form over the 7.1 multichannel audio outputs.

The three disc set (which will also include a DVD and digital copy of the film) will be presented in 1080p AVC accompanied by a lossless/uncompressed soundtrack.

Slumdog Tops UK Blu-ray Sales Chart

During the week of June 1- June 7, Fox's 'Slumdog Millionaire' was the top-selling Blu-ray in the United Kingdom, followed by Optimum's 'The Wrestler'. Optimum also got 'Terminator 2: Judgement Day' [sic] at number 3, showing great performance for a catalog title. The top seller for previous week, 'The Spirit', fell to number 7.

Mobile Phones Can Become BD-Live Remotes

Los Angeles-based marketing company Trailer Park has created an application that can convert select mobile phones (iPhone, Blackberry and T-Mobile's Android devices) into remote controls for Blu-ray players, especially for access to BD-Live content, incorporating the keyboard function from the phones instead of the laborious toggle function found on most BD remotes.

Laguna Films Brings Two Movies to Blu-ray

Laguna Films, which had recently entered the Blu-ray arena with 'Boys of Ghost Town', will shortly release two Latino-themed movies on Blu-ray, day-and-date with the DVD. 'King of the Streets' will street on June 16, whereas 'Six Thugs' will hit store shelves on July 14. No specifications are available at this time. 'King of the Sreets' will include two music videos.

AACS Final License Goes Online

One of our insiders has let us know that the AACS Final Adopter Agreement went discreetly online on June 5, without any fanfare or announcement. AACS (Advanced Access Content System) is the content protection scheme for Blu-ray, just like CSS is for DVD. It has been operating on an interim license agreement since inception, and a final agreement was long overdue.

Animated Donkey X Announced for August

Phase 4 Films has announced that it will release the animated movie 'Donkey X' on Blu-ray on August 11, day-and-date with the DVD. This is a retelling of the legendary story of Don Quixote, where the hero is now Rucio, Sancho Panza's donkey. Audio and video specifications have not been disclosed at this time. The only bonus feature included will be a trailer.

BD Sales Information: May 25-31 (Update)

In the absence of major new Blu-ray releases, 'Taken' took back the top spot in the BD sales rankings for the week ending May 31, inching past the previous number one, 'Valkyrie', according to data from Nielsen VideoScan First Alert. 'Paul Blart: Mall Cop' stood firm in third place. Boosted by discounts at several retailers, the veteran 'Quantum of Solace' shot back to number four. Update: overall sales figures added.

High-def Week at Amazon (Friday Update)

Online retail giant Amazon has alerted its customers of the beginning of its "High- def Week." Between Monday, June 8 and Friday, June 12, the Amazon Gold Box will be featuring great deals on a variety of high-definition items in all of the Deal of the Days and Lightning Deals. These will include the winner in a vote held last month to determine the deal of the day between five BD box sets.

The Prisoner Blu-ray Coming in October

In an early announcement to retailers, it has been revealed that A&E Home Video will release the cult British TV series 'The Prisoner' on Blu-ray on October 27. No release details have been disclosed at this time, other than it will be a five-disc set. This series had been announced in the UK earlier in the year, but the release was abruptly postponed without a date.
