Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Spanish home video distributor Aurum Producciones has announced that it has reached an agreement with Studio Ghibli to distribute all titles from the famous Japanese animation studio on DVD and Blu-ray. The first movie to be released on Blu-ray will be the latest work by Hayao Miyazaki, 'Ponyo' (also known as 'Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea').

Fox Two-Pack BDs Released (Update)

On May 24, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment released a series of Blu-ray sets of two titles from its own catalog and MGM's. These two-packs are rather aggressively priced at an MSRP of $34.98 each, which makes them very good value for the money. Update: the movies are in their own individual packaging, shrinkwrapped together back-to-back.

The New York Ripper Announced for Blu-ray

Blue Underground has announced that they will bring the controversial horror film 'The New York Ripper' to Blu-ray on September 29th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Video will be presented in 2.35:1 1080p VC-1 accompanied by both 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio and 7.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtracks.

Results Are In: Howards End to be the Next Criterion Blu-ray

A couple months back, Amazon posted a poll where fans could vote on which film they wanted Criterion to publish next. Well, the results are in and 'Howards End' will be the next Blu-ray title from the popular film distributor. No official announcement has been made, but a pre-order has popped up on Amazon's website indicating that a release date should be announced soon.

Withnail and I, Bubba Ho-Tep, The Long Good Friday BD for UK

Starz Home Entertainment has announced the Blu-ray release of three catalog titles in the United Kingdom for August 17: 'Bubba Ho-Tep', 'The Long Good Friday' and 'Withnail and I', which initially were slated for release in May/June. No audio or video specifications have been detailed yet. There is no information about region encoding at this time.

Pioneer's New Line of BD Players Available

Pioneer Electronics has announced that its new Blu-ray player models BDP-120, BDP-320, and BDP-23FD, premiered last January at CES, are now available to buy, for a suggested retail price of $299, $399 and $599, respectively. All three support BD-Live, and include advanced audio decoders, as well as an integrated USB port for use with compatible flash drives and hard disk drives.

Our good friends over at The Digital Bits have posted on their "Rumor Mill" section a peek at some of the catalog titles from Paramount and Dreamworks that will probably be on Blu-ray during September and into the fourth quarter of the year. The list includes the highly anticipated best-picture Oscar winners 'Braveheart', 'Gladiator' and 'Forrest Gump'.

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring 'The Fast and the Furious', '2 Fast 2 Furious', and 'The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift' to Blu-ray on July 28th, day-and-date with the Blu-ray release of 'Fast & Furious'. Originally only available as part of the 'The Fast and the Furious Trilogy' Blu-ray package, these release will similarly feature digital copies of the film on a second disc.

Final Specs for Heroes Season 3 Revealed

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has revealed the final specs for the Blu-ray release of 'Heroes: Season 3, which is due to hit store shelves on September 1, day-and-date with the DVD. As with previous seasons of the series, video will be 1.78:1 1080p accompanied by a DTS-HD Master Audio track. The season will come in five BD50 discs, and will be rich in special features, some of them exclusive to the BD release.

British Thriller Hush Announced for Blu-ray

Optimum Home Entertainment has announced that it will release the movie 'Hush' on Blu-ray in the UK on July 20, day-and-date with the DVD. No audio/video specs have been detailed at this time. Bonus features will include a feature Commentary, interviews with director Mark Tonderai and actor William Ash, deleted scenes with commentary, featurettes, and an "Artist on Artist interview."

Highlander UK Special Edition Blu-ray Gets Detailed

Optimum Home Entertainment has listed the bonus features for the 'Highlander: Special Edition', which is due to hit UK store shelves on Blu-ray on July 6. Video will be 1.85:1 1080p. Audio specs haven't been listed, but going from the details of the concurrent German release by Kinowelt, it will probably include 2.0 and 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks.

Sony Optiarc Exec Discusses Blu-ray Challenges and Outlook

During the Computex fair in Taiwan, Sony Optiarc's European marketing director Ralf Wolf had a short interview with Tom's Hardware about the current state of the ODD business as well as upcoming Blu-ray developments. In the opinion of Sony Optiarc, Blu-ray is a mature technology now and the prospects are good, especially for the second half of the year.

UK Gets Watchmen Theatrical Cut Only

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced the release of 'Watchmen' on Blu-ray in the United Kingdom on July 27. Unlike the US edition from Warner –which will only feature the 186-minute director's cut of the movie-, the UK version will only include the 162-minute theatrical cut. Bonus materials also will be different. The release will consist of two BDs plus one DVD with a digital copy.

One of the most eagerly-awaited titles for Blu-ray is definitely moving towards an actual release. In an early announcement to retailers, it has been revealed that Paramount Home Entertainment will bring the Mel Gibson war/action epic 'Braveheart' to BD on September 1. Amazon has unveiled another exclusive Blu-ray product offering, this time involving one of the hottest titles of this summer: 'Watchmen'. The Hangover Being Prepared for Blu-ray

In a recent interview, director Todd Phillips (of 'Old School' fame) spoke about some of his plans for the upcoming Blu-ray release of his upcoming film 'The Hangover', which is due to hit theaters this Friday. He mentioned that the Blu-ray would eventually feature some cut scenes that didn't make it into the film and that they were "recording one of those picture in picture commentaries".

Brad Silberling Talks Land of the Lost Blu-ray

'Land of the Lost', the movie adaptation of the 1970s children TV series, hasn't opened theatrically yet and its director is already looking at the Blu-ray release. Brad Silberling said in an interview that the Blu-ray will include 35 minutes of deleted scenes, and that a later release could even include an extended cut with 'raunchier' material.

Valkyrie Cast-and-Crew Press Conference

Optimum Home Entertainment has added nearly forty catalog titles to its Blu-ray schedule, for release between July and September 2009. Titles run the gamut of genres, from Hong Kong martial arts to European arthouse classics, and more Luc Besson than you can shake a stick at. No information on region coding is available, but Optimum often locks its titles to region B.
