Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Scream Factory and Shout Factory have announced their November batch of releases. They are: The Chow Yun-Fat Collection Volume One, The Family Man (2000), Women in Prison Collection (1971-1985), and The Transformers: The Movie (1986).

Warner to Back Blu-ray Exclusively

Warner has announced that they will be switching to support Blu-ray exclusively. Warner has been supporting both formats since they were launched, but recent talk from top executives suggested that Warner couldn't continue down that road much longer, and that the all important holiday sales would help them make a decision. With Blu-ray winning every week in high definition sales this year, Warner has decided that The Future is Blu.

Eastern Promises Announced for the UK

Pathe Distribution has announced that they will bring 'Eastern Promises' to Blu-ray on Feburary 25th in the UK, day-and-date with the DVD release. The release is HD DVD exclusive in the US. No technical specs have been released at this time. Extras will mirror those found on the DVD release, with a "Secrets and Stories" and "Marked for Life" featurettes.

CES 2008: Marantz Will Debut BD8002 at CES

Marantz has announced that they will debut their BD8002 Blu-ray disc player at CES next week. The player will utilize the acclaimed 10-bit Silicon Optix Realta chip to provide stunning 1080p pictures via the HDMI v1.3 connector. 7.1 analog-out will be available, along with support for Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio. In compliance with BDA spec, the player will support Bonus View content through secondary video and audio decoders.

Celine Dion's Blu-ray Release Back on Track

Sony BMG has announced that they will release 'Celine Dion: A New Day... Live at Las Vegas' for Blu-ray on February 5th. The title, originally scheduled to be released December 11th, will feature 1080p AVC video accompanied by 5.1 PCM audio. Extras will mirror the DVD release, with a behind-the-scenes documentary, "Tribute to the Fans" featurette, and interviews with the creative team.

Sleuth Announced for Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that will bring 'Sleuth' to Blu-ray on March 11th, day-and-date with the DVD release. No specs have been announced at this time, but expect the usual 1080p presentation from Sony. Special features have yet to be announced as well.

Japan to See Exclusive Blu-ray Titles in March

Retailers have updated their listings in Japan, and some surprising titles have made an appearance. On February 22nd, the Luc Besson films 'Unleashed' (HD DVD exclusive in the US) and 'Taxi 3' will be released, along with the already released Transporter films in a 2-pack. On March 5th, Sony Pictures will release 'Almost Famous: The Extended Cut' and on March 21st, 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' (HD DVD exclusive in the US) will get released.

Cyberlink PowerDVD Receives Profile v1.1 Certification

Cyberlink has announced that their PowerDVD Ultra software for PC Blu-ray playback has received Profile v1.1 certification from the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA). This upgrade will allow BonusView material to be viewed on a PC with a Blu-ray drive and compatible hardware. The updated version is expected to ship soon.

Independence Day Re-Announced for March 11th

Fox Home Entertainment has announced that the highly anticipated Blu-ray release of 'Independence Day' will hit store shelves on March 11th. The release was initially delayed due to compatibility issues with some players. It seems now that those issues have been resolved, and that the release is ready to be delivered into consumer's hands.

Saawariya Announced for Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring 'Saawariya' to Blu-ray on March 11th, day-and-date with the DVD release. It will be presented in 2.40 1080p and in its original Hindi soundtrack. The only extra announced for the release so far is a "Making of the Music" TV special.

Dogma and Gattaca for Blu-ray on March 11th

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring 'Dogma' and 'Gattaca' to Blu-ray on March 11th. Both will be present in 2.40 1080p. 'Dogma' will feature cast and crew commentary, technical commentary, 100 min of deleted scenes (with intros), and the "Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash" commercial. 'Gattaca' will feature a blooper real, deleted scenes, Substance test outtake, and numerous featurettes.

Michael Clayton Announced for Blu-ray

Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring 'Michael Clayton' to Blu-ray on February 19th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Video will be presented in 1080p VC-1 accompanied by a Dolby Digital soundtrack. Extra features include a full-length audio commentary and deleted scenes.

The Invasion Blu-ray Gets Delayed

Warner Home Entertainment has revealed that they are delaying the release of 'The Invasion' until January 29th. The title, which was originally scheduled to street on January 8th, will feature a VC-1 video encode and Dolby TrueHD soundtrack on a BD-50. Extras include a documentary and three featurettes.

Panasonic Unveils New Thinner Blu-ray Drive

Panasonic is set to unveil a new Blu-ray drive at CES that will be the thinnest laptop Blu-ray drive yet. Panasonic's previous laptop Blu-ray drive was 12.7mm thick. This new drive, which has the ability to read and write Blu-ray discs at 2X, as well as read and write DVDs and CDs, is only 9.5mm thick. No additional information was revealed at this time, but we'll have all the juicy specs live from CES in just a couple of weeks.

Unbreakable, Hidalgo, and Coyote Ugly Get April Blu-ray Releases

Buena Vista Home Entertainment has announced that they will release three catalog titles for Blu-ray on April 1st. 'Unbreakable', 'Hidalgo', and 'Coyote Ugly' will all be presented in 1080p video with PCM audio. No extras have been announced at this time, but we do know that 'Coyote Ugly' will feature both theatrical and Director's Cut on the same disc.

Official BDA Website Hacked (Updated)

The official website of the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) has been hacked and is now directing traffic to the website of a not-so-perfect competitor. Do not be alarmed by this act of cyber-terrorism; the BDA is just fine. Until the problem gets resolved, please refrain from visiting that site.

Hollywood Reporter Predicts 2008 Win for Blu-ray

As this year comes to a close, Hollywood Reporter is making a few predictions about what they expect to see from Hollywood next year. With regards to the format war in 2008, they predict, "Blu-ray blows away HD DVD". Citing the strength of sales as the major reasons for it eventual success, they also suggested that the PlayStation 3 is a major driving force for the format.

Inside the Making of Cars Blu-ray

Terminator 3 Replacement Program Implemented

Confirming our suspicions, Warner Home Video is taking information to send out replacement discs for the recent Blu-ray release of 'Terminator 3'. When the title is played without the In Movie Experience (IME) activated, the title plays at a maximum resolution of 1080i. Obviously, this is well short of the 1080p presentation promised on the cover. For a replacement disc, contact WHV Customer Support at 1-800-553-6937.

Harry Potter Blu-ray Replacement Program Implemented

As a temporary solution, Warner Home Entertainment is issuing single release replacement discs for owners who found an HD DVD version of 'Goblet of Fire' in their Blu-ray Harry Potter box sets. Digital Playground Plans First Blu-ray Release

After deciding to release only on the HD DVD format, Digital Playground has gone neutral and will release their adult film 'Pirates' on Blu-ray this January. The main feature will be presented in 1080p, and unlike the HD DVD counterpart, all extras will come in 1080p as well. No other technical specs are available at this time.

The Assassination of Jesse James Gets Blu-ray Release

Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring 'The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford' to Blu-ray on February 26th, day-and-date with the DVD release. No technical specs have been announced, but expect the usual Warner treatment of VC-1 and a Dolby Digital soundtrack. The only extras will be a 30 minute documentary "Death of an Outlaw" and the theatrical trailer.

Warner Brothers Blu-ray Blunder... Again

One of the most anticipated releases on Blu-ray this quarter is the Blu-ray release of 'Blade Runner'. Demand for the release has left many retailers sold-out, leaving fans of the iconic Sci-fi film empty-handed. Unfortunately, some fans lucky enough to get a copy have found that the fifth disc is actually the same as the first disc, instead of the being the labeled work print.

The Adventures of Baron Munchausen Announced

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring 'The Adventures of Baron Munchausen' to Blu-ray on April 8th. Specs have not yet been announced for this title, but extras include an audio commentary track, two featurettes, two storyboard sequences, and deleted scenes. Exclusive to this Blu-ray release is a "Graphics and Picture Track".
