Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

PS3 Firmware v2.10 is Ready for Download

Sony Computer Entertainment has released the latest firmware upgrade for the PS3, bringing the video game device up to version 2.10. This update allows the PS3 to playback Blu-ray Profile v1.1 content, which includes picture-in-picture features. Movies featuring PIP content are expected on store shelves within the next few weeks, so make sure you update your PS3 so you don't miss out on any of the content.

Pirates of the Caribbean Replacement Program

Many months after the Blu-ray release of 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl', an error was discovered in the framing of some scenes. To rectify this issue, Disney is offering a replacement disc with the framing corrected. Simply call their customer service line at 1-800-723-4763 (US) and you will need to provide them with your contact information. Have your copy in front of you as well, if possible.

Blu-ray Profile v1.1 Support Comes to PS3 Very Soon

A support file on the European PlayStation site has provided detailed information regarding the upcoming Firmware v2.10 update for the PS3, including that it will upgrade the PS3 to a Blu-ray Profile v1.1 player. This update will allow the machine to playback picture-in-picture content on upcoming Blu-ray titles such as '3:10 to Yuma'.

Enchanted Announced for Blu-ray

Buena Vista Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the surprise hit 'Enchanted' to Blu-ray this Easter. Video will be presented in 2.35:1 1080p and audio will be 5.1 24-bit PCM. Extras include deleted scenes, bloopers, three behind-the-scenes featurettes, and a Blu-ray exclusive game called "D-Files".

Sony Remains Preferred Blu-ray Company

Despite new offerings from companies like Panasonic and LG, Sony captured 60% of Blu-ray stand-alone player sales for the week ending November 24th (which includes Black Friday sales data). Coming in second was Samsung with 37% followed by Panasonic with 5% of total sales.

Before the Devil Knows You're Dead Announced

Image Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Ethan Hawk and Philip Seymour Hoffman film 'Before the Devil Knows You're Dead' to Blu-ray on April 15th, day-and-date with the DVD release. No technical specs have been announced at this time, nor supplemental specs, but hopefully we'll be hearing more about this title soon.

30 Days of Night Coming to Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring '30 Days of Night' to Blu-ray on February 26th, day-and-date with the DVD release. No specs have been announced at this time, but expect 1080p video and TrueHD audio. Extras will include either featurettes and audio commentary.

Pirates 3 Sells 160K Copies; Superbad Not Far Behind

Coming in on the top of the high definition sales charts last week was the Blu-ray release of 'Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End' with an estimated 160,000 copies sold. Coming in second was 'Superbad', also released last week exclusively on Blu-ray, which posted impressive numbers as well. At this time, weekly percentages are not available.

No Country for Old Men Announced

Miramax Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring one of the highest rated films of the year, 'No Country for Old Men', to Blu-ray on March 11th. Video will be presented in 1080p and accompanied by a PCM soundtrack. Extras should be similar to the DVD release, but nothing has been officially announced at this time.

Disney's The Rookie Comes to Blu-ray

Buena Vista Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring 'The Rookie' to Blu-ray on March 4th. Video will be presented in 2.35:1 1080p and audio will be 5.1 PCM. Extras include audio commentary, Spring Training: Baseball Tips From The Pros featurette; "The Inspirational Story Of Jim Morris" featurette; and deleted scenes.

Stringer: "We Remain Totally Committed to Blu-ray"

Once again, comments from Sir Howard Stringer, CEO of Sony, have been taken out of context and plastered across news sites as proof Sony's diminishing commitment to Blu-ray (despite actual actions by the company, of course). And once again, Scott Hettrick of HiHD is forced to set the record straight - Sony "remain[s] totally committed to Blu-ray."

To Kill a King Gets Blu-ray Release

Starz Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the British drama 'To Kill a King' to Blu-ray on February 26th. No specs have been announced at this time, but previous Starz releases have featured 1080p AVC and PCM audio. No extras have been announced at this time.

Harry Potter Blunder

Some owners of the 'Harry Potter Limited Edition Gift Set' are reporting that an HD DVD has infiltrated their Blu-ray packaging. Numerous reports are surfacing that owners of the Blu-ray set are finding HD DVD versions of "Goblet of Fire" or "The Order of the Phoenix" in their packaging. So if you picked up the set yesterday, or plan to pick one up soon, make sure to check all the discs for the Blu-ray logo.

Another Girls Gone Wild on the Way

Just in time for Valentine's Day, Mantra Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring 'Girls Gone Wild: Baby Bash Live and Uncensored' to Blu-ray on February 12th. The first GGW HD title, 'Girls Gone Wild: Sexiest Moments Ever 2', was released in stores today with 1080p video accompanied by a Dolby Digital track. Expect specs for 'Baby Bash' to be similar.

The Song Remains the Same Remains Unreleased

Warner Home Video has revealed that they have delayed the high definition release of 'Led Zeppelin: The Song Remains the Same' indefinitely. Originally scheduled to be released along-side the DVD in November, it was delayed until December 11th, and has now been pulled from the release list altogether. No word on a possible new release date.

Buena Vista Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring 'Dan In Real Life' to Blu-ray on March 11th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Video will come in 1.85:1 1080p accompanied by a 24-bit PCM audio track. Extras include deleted scenes, outtakes, a making-of featurette, a score featurette, and audio commentary.

Rush Hour 3 Gets Release Date Push

New Line Home Entertainment has revealed that their upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Rush Hour 3' will now get released on December 23rd instead of the originally scheduled December 26th date. New Line hopes that releasing the title earlier will allow them to cash in on some pre-Christmas consumer spending. No specs have changed with the date shift.

Web-enabled Titles to Come this January

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has announced that two of their upcoming January Blu-ray titles will feature web-enabled features. As we reported from the Blu-ray Festival, 'War', which is scheduled to hit store shelves on January 1st, will feature a web-enabled game where viewers can battle each other. 'Saw IV', which will come out two weeks later on January 22nd, will feature web sharing of unspecified content.

The Remastering of Blade Runner

Warner Home Video will soon release a remastered version of the Ridley Scott's science fiction classic 'Blade Runner' on Blu-ray in what will be the best looking version of the film yet. A lot of effort went into remastering the original presentation, and Sound and Vision Magazine has an in depth look into how this title went from film to disc.

Title Announcements at High-Def 2.0

Yesterday at High-Def 2.0, studios announced some upcoming Blu-ray titles. Sony Pictures will bring 'Dogma' to Blu-ray on Februrary 12th and 'Run Lola Run' a week later on February 19th. 'The Guns of the Navarone' and 'A Passage to India' will come soon after, with 'Lawrence of Arabia' and 'Bridge on the River Kwai' later in the year.

Michael Bay: "Blu-ray Suits My Films Better"

Responding to an attempted mutiny by some of his loyal fans, director Michael Bay commented that ultimately, Blu-ray is the logical choice for his films. "I know what the final product should look like - Blu-ray suits my films better." Bay is just one of a number of directors and producers who have become outspoken with regards to supporting Blu-ray in the format war.

Kevin Smith's Dogma coming to Blu-ray February 12

Fans of Kevin Smith's offbeat verbose comedies will be happy to know that the director's 1999 religious satire 'Dogma' is headed to Blu-ray on February 12, 2008. Specs have yet to be announced, but the title will retail for $28.99.

300, Casino Royale Pick-up Awards at HD 2.0

High-Def 2.0 was a one day conference sponsored by Home Media Magazine in cooperation with The Hollywood Reporter and the Entertainment Merchants Assn. As part of the event, awards were given out for the best high definition discs as part of the High-Def Disc Awards. 'Casino Royale' was awarded Blu-ray Live Action Title of the Year. Winning the overall disc of the year was the Blu-ray version of '300'.

Blu-ray Owns 95% of Australian HD Market

On the heels of Video Ezy announcing they would only support Blu-ray, GfK (in association with Sony) has released a report stating that Blu-ray owned 95.2% of the high definition market in Australia for October. Blu-ray hardware (including the PS3) sold 26-to-1 compared to its rival HD DVD. Additionally, software sales were 18,000 units sold for Blu-ray compared to only 2,000 for HD DVD.

Pirates Packaging Misprint

Those of you who are picking up 'Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End' today on Blu-ray may notice that something isn't quite right on the specifications. If you look at the video encode for the main feature, the packaging says it is presented in 1080i. You shouldn't worry, though, as this is simply a misprint - the title is encoded at full 1080p24.
