Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Scream Factory and Shout Factory Announce November Releases

Scream Factory and Shout Factory have announced their November batch of releases. They are: The Chow Yun-Fat Collection Volume One, The Family Man (2000), Women in Prison Collection (1971-1985), and The Transformers: The Movie (1986).

CES 2008: THX

Today I had the opportunity to speak with the folks at THX about their certification program and plans for Blu-ray Disc and the home theater market in 2008. THX's booth at CES is certainly not the largest, but it is VERY busy. THX has come a long way from when they were under the LucasFilm umbrella and certifying cinemas 25 years ago. They since have added programs to certify home theater components, televisions (display devices), mobile audio systems, home video media (VHS, LD, DVD), and game audio.

CES 2008: Blu-ray Disc Association Booth (Updated with Photos)

As one enters the Las Vegas Convention Center South Hall, you are greeted by the sights and sounds of various vendors pushing, what they claim, to be the next big hit. One booth, however, stood out from the rest. It could have been the huge 103" LCD displaying various clips from Blu-ray films, or possibly the large replica of the Black Pearl from the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' films, but the booth was absolutely swarmed with people looking for the latest information about the successor to DVD.

CES 2008: Upcoming Pioneer BDP-05FD Blu-ray Player (Updated with Photos)

Pioneer is currently showing their new BDP-05FD Blu-ray player model that so far has no release date or price point. The player is Bonus View (profile 1.1) compatible and internally decodes Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA. Pioneer has promised more information at their product show in May.

CES 2008: Daewoo / Daytek Blu-ray Player

After much searching, I finally located Daewoo at CES today. Their BD Live Blu-ray player is still in the prototype stage and the company is in planning and research mode for an eventual Canadian release under the Daytek brand name. Daewoo hopes to enter the market in the $199 to $299 (Canadian dollars) price point sometime this year. There is still the possibility that the player could come to the US market, but the rapidly falling prices on BD players from major CE companies might price Daewoo out of the BD race in the states.

CES 2008: Funai / Sylvania Blu-ray Player (Updated with Photos)

Funai has just confirmed the release of their profile 1.1 BD player for the second quarter of 2008. The player will be released under the Sylvania brand name and by "several other OEM partners," according to Funai spokesperson Kanako Inouchi. Pricing will be under $300.

CES 2008: Panasonic SC-BT100 Blu-ray Player (Updated with Pics)

Panasonic has revealed that their new SC-BT100 Home Theater in a Box system will feature not only profile 1.1 (Bonus View) compatibility, but also full PCM, TrueHD and DTS HD Master Audio support as well. These advanced audio formats will be decoded internally within the player and no additional hardware will be required. The system will be made available in 5.1 and 7.1 configurations and will feature wireless rear channel speakers.

CES 2008: Philips Future Plans

I went over to the Philips booth today to learn more about their upcoming BDP-7200, and learned some interesting things about their future plans. They are planning to release a BD-Live player at some point in the future, possibly this year. Additionally, they completely sold through all units of their first Blu-ray player, and will have nothing for market until the launch of the BDP-7200.

CES 2008: Panasonic DMP-BD50 Blu-ray Player (Updated with Pics)

This just in from CES: Panasonic has just unveiled the new DMP-BD50 Blu-ray player with full BD Live (profile 2.0) implementation. The player will internally decode Dolby TrueHD as well as DTS HD Master Audio and will have the same SD card functionality as the current DMP-BD30.

CES 2008: Sharp Introduces BD-HP50

Sharp Electronics is showing off their new BD-HP50 Bonus View Blu-ray Player. Available in May for $699, the player will decode Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD. The player will also support Aquos link to control your Sharp TV with the same remote and Quick Start for fast loading movies.

CES 2008: Hitachi

BDA member Hitachi had their Blu-ray Disc camcorders, the DZ-BD70A ($1299 MSRP) and the DZ-BD7HA ($1499 MSRP) on display here at CES. Although these models have been out a few months, unfortunately Hitachi did not have any new models or BD players to show.

I sat with Craig Eggars, Senior Manager at Dolby Laboratories today. Craig was excited about Blu-ray disc and the next generation of audio technologies associated with it, such as Dolby TrueHD and Dolby Digital Plus.

CES 2008: Live from Sony Pictures Conference Cont.

A surprise announcement at the conference, Don Eklund from Sony Pictures revealed that Sony Pictures will make available for download via BD-Live extra content. The example shown was a video from actor Will Smith regarding his film 'Hancock' with a sneak peak of the film specifically for CES. He did mention that he is a fan of Blu-ray.

CES 2008: Live with 20th Century Fox

Fox is currently announcing their 2008 plans for BD. In addition to growing their catalog of BD titles, Fox plans on aggressively jumping into the market with advanved BD Live functionality featuring networked gaming and social networking. Fox is demonstrating a working Alien Vs. Predator networked game that allows players compete for the highest kill numbers. More to come...

CES 2008: Live from Sony Pictures Conference

Sony Pictures today showcased upcoming Blu-ray interactive features for their titles. One feature will allow viewers to send a ring tone to their phone from the movie. Additionally, PSP owners will be happy to hear that a portable copy will be available on the disc encoded specifically for the PSP. Also shown was a Men In Black network trivia game.

CES 2008: Philips BDP7200 Blu-ray Player

At the BDA Booth today, Philips is showing off their upcoming Bonus View player, the BDP7200. Retailing for $349, the player will pass Dolby TrueHD and DTS-MA. The player is a proprietary Philips design, unlike their first Blu-ray player.

CES 2008: Panasonic Keynote - Wireless BD

Panasonic today announced during their CES keynote, a new wireless HD video system called Home Base that completely eliminates cables from a HD setup. The system was demonstrated using a DMP-BD30 playing BD content without any loss in quality. Panasonic plans to release this product early next year.

Just a quick update regarding the new profile 2.0 BD Live DMP-BD50 from Panasonic. The player is expected to ship this spring and a price is not being announced at CES. Panasonic assures us that the player will be positioned at a price point slightly above the DMP-BD30.

CES 2008: Exclusive Interview - Andy Parsons

Today at the BDA booth we had the opportunity to speak with Mr. Parsons, head of the BDA and Pioneer Electronics, concerning Blu-ray software sales in the month of December. The volume of BD films moved during the holiday season alone amounted to more than 50% of the total volume of HD DVD discs sold by the rival format since inception. With numbers as staggering as these, it's easy to see why the BDA now includes Warner amongst its exclusive partners.

ArcSoft, Inc. and Related Content Database Inc. (RCDB) have come together to create ArcSoft TotalMedia Extreme with BD Magic, an optional Blu-ray player feature that adds both a network content delivery channel and an on-screen personal media library. BD Magic featured players can receive updated Blu-ray trailers, Blu-ray sample scenes, and exclusive high-definition content direct to their Blu-ray player.

At the Sony booth, they are showcasing two new prototype BD-Live players. The Sapphire 3 and 4 will both be Profile 2.0. Sony also has indicated that the PS3 will get a BD-Live upgrade sometime in the future.

CES 2008: Samsung Unveils BD-UP5500

Samsung today announced the upcoming dual format BD-UP5500. However the press conference did not give specifics, such as a release date. Interestingly, the Samsung home product rep Nelson Allen did not even refer to Blu-ray or the "other format", just saying that the player will play "any HD format disc you have". No specifications were given other than 1080p with 24fps playback, other information reveals it will be BD profile 1.1 compliant. No word on audio formats at this time.

At their massive press conference today at CES, Panasonic announced the new SC-BT1000 home theater in a box with a built in Bonus View (profile 1.1) Blu-ray player. Panasonic has also revealed that they will unveil the world's first BD Live (profile 2.0) Blu-ray player at CES tomorrow.

New Line Shifts to Blu-ray Exclusivity

Following Warner's lead, sister company New Line has confirmed that it will support Blu-ray Disc high def releases exclusively. New Line has previously delayed their day-and-date new releases on HD DVD due to the format's lack of region coding, effectively making titles such as Shoot 'em Up, Hairspray, and Rush Hour 3 exclusive to Blu-ray. Although a 2008 release slate for the studio has not been released, an announcement may be possible at this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Michael Bay: "Blu-ray is Just Better"

Outspoken director Michael Bay has once again posted his views on the format war, discussing how he feels about the recent announcement that Warner Brothers would exclusively support Blu-ray. After claiming HD DVD would "die a slow death", he gave hope to his fans that his recent blockbuster film 'Transformers' would one day be on Blu-ray.

Fox Announces Q1 Blu-ray Titles

Fox Home Entertainment has announced six upcoming Blu-ray titles, all with street dates during the first quarter of 2008. Included in the list is the delayed Blu-ray release of 'Independence Day' which will see release on March 11th, the same date as the newly announced and highly anticipated 'I, Robot'. CES 2008: Disney Announces Upcoming Titles for All Regions

In a pre-CES press release, Disney has unveiled their expected upcoming Blu-ray releases through the summer. While the list is by no means complete, it does give us a good indication of what to look for in the coming months. 'The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe' has once again been put on the Blu-ray release list for May, which should be released around the May 16th theatrical release of 'The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian'.
