Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Rounders Coming to Blu-ray this April

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has announced the technical specs and special features for the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Rounders: 10th Anniversary Edition', which is due to hit store shelves on April 14th. Video will be presented in 2.40:1 1080p AVC accompanied by a 24-bit 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtrack.

The Grudge Announced for Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the horror film 'The Grudge' to Blu-ray on March 24th. This Takashi Shimizu stars Sarah Michelle Gellar as a nurse who encounters a supernatural spirit that is possessing people around her. Video will be presented in 1.85:1 AVC accompanied by a 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtrack.

Kite Runner Announced for Blu-ray

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Oscar-nominated foreign film 'Kite Runner' to Blu-ray on March 24th. The film tells the story of two young friends on the opposite sides of bloody war. Video will be presented in 2.35:1 1080p accompanied by a 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtrack.

Sony Announces I've Loved You So Long and Passengers

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring 'I've Loved You So Long' to Blu-ray on March 3rd, day-and-date with the DVD release. Video will be presented in 1.85:1 1080p AVC accompanied by a 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtrack. They have also announced that they will bring 'Passengers' to Blu-ray on March 24th, day-and-date with the DVD release. That release will utilize 2.40:1 1080p AVC video accompanied by a 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtrack.

Death Race Announcer Contest Extended

Owners of the 'Death Race' Blu-ray listen up: Universal Studios Home Entertainment is currently holding a contest where viewers can submit their own commentary for one of the films intense race scenes via the "My Commentary" BD-Live feature for a chance to win a 52" HDTV and PS3. CES 2009: Optoma Showcases New HD Projectors

The Optoma booth at the 2009 CES was ablaze with two stunning new 1080p projectors on the verge of release. Chief between these is the HD8200, which will street in late January for $4999 MSRP. A demonstration with excellent image contrast, which played Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in a totally darkened room using a 2.35 screen with an anamorphic lens attached, showed off the amazing capacity of the 8200.

CES 2009: ArcSoft Brings Exciting New BD Technology Closer To Consumers

Collaborating with major providers such as ASUS, C-Media, and DTS, ArcSoft announced at this year's CES that the ArcSoft TotalMedia Theatre now supports ASUS' Xonar HDAV1.3 PCI card, enabling the use of lossless 7.1 sound codecs for the first time, allowing a full Blu-ray experience. Audio downsampling is a thing of the past as ArcSoft's TotalMedia Theatre, when combined with the Xonar HDAV1.3 card, supports up to 192kHz, 24-bit sound.

CES 2009: MSI Displays BD Desktops, Notebooks

A highlight of the MSI Computer booth at this year's Consumer Electronics show was the company's new Wind NetOn series of desktop PCs, including 22-inch AE2203 and 19-inch AP1900, AE1901 and AP1902. The AE2203 comes equipped with full HD compatibility and an optional Blu-ray drive, a first for MSI's desktop line.

CES 2009: Cyberlink Previews PowerDVD 9 Software

The company behind the ubiquitous computer DVD software PowerDVD demonstrated the new functions of its latest edition, PowerDVD 9, due out in March of 2009. This latest edition provides full support for all high resolution BD audio formats like DTS-HD MA 7.1 and Dolby TrueHD. Providing complete support for BD-Live, users can download content and utilize the interactive features with as much ease as standard Blu-ray players.

CES 2009: Mitsubishi Exhibits Latest 1080p Projectors, Samples 3-D

The CES booths of Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America were hopping this year with an impressive array of high definition home theatre equipment just released to market last autumn, including their high-end 1080p Diamond Series Projectors and a 73" DLP monitor showcasing NVIDIA 3-D technology.

CES 2009: Moser Baer Shows BD-R Media Samples

Indian optical storage media manufacturer Moser Baer was present at this year's CES, displaying samples of their recordable BD-R discs. According to the press release, they are the first company outside of Japan to develop and ship 6x Blu-ray Disc Recordable (BD-R) media, and are developing new BD-Rs that are capable of reaching 8x recording speeds.

CES 2009: Desay AV

Desay AV did not have any new Blu-ray players on display. They do have Blu-ray players already for sale and they are under $200 which makes them unique, but a trend that will continue to grow. They have three Blu-ray players in their line up. You choose which you like the looks of, as inside all the players are the same.

CES 2009: NEC Blu-ray Chip Set

After speaking to a representative from NEC electronics he is not aware of any Blu-ray players that will be made by NEC. NEC are not sulking in the corner after the demise of HD DVD, anything but. NEC are actively making chip sets for other manufacturers to incorporate in their players. In their demonstration room they had a player with a Sony badge on it, I will let you jump to your own conclusions as to why there was a Sony Blu-ray player in an NEC display. There has been plenty of talk here on Blu-ray.com about the relationships with NEC so this should be nothing new. The NEC representative was very upbeat about Blu-ray.

CES 2009: Magnavox Combo TV and Blu-ray player

I was asked to stress that his product is only for USA consumption. That is not to say you won't see a product similar to this in another country sometime in the future, but any non US reader do not ask or enquire. Magnavox have announced their 42MD459B another TV with a built in Blu-ray player, whilst some companies are incorporating a built in Blu-ray into their smaller 30 inch range of TV's, not Magnavox.

The DTS booth at this year's Consumer Electronics Show was lively as ever, and Blu-ray.com was fortunate enough to sit down with DTS Marketing Vice President Tom Dixon to discuss the present and future of the digital audio company's product plans. With Blu-ray taking off in such leaps and bounds, DTS is top of it all with further market saturation of their high resolution DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 codec, as well as the planned introduction of more advanced sound systems in the near future.

CES 2009: Samsung Sound Bar with Built in Blu-ray Player

Samsung are showing off another of their latest offerings at the CES. Mount this on the wall, add a TV or monitor and plug in the wireless sub into the power and you have a 2.1 Blu-ray set up with a virtual 5.1 surround sound effect. This may not be an ideal set up for many here, but it does mean that more players that get out into the market place. It is players in innovative configurations like this that are making Blu-ray mainstream.

Cambridge Audio were showing off their new Blu-ray player the Azur 640BD. This is Cambridge Audio's first release of a Blu-ray player. As we would expect from Cambridge Audio the front panel is uncluttered with only the basic functions, the remote control has the rest.

The Blu-ray Disc Association held its annual press conference yesterday afternoon in the belly of the Venetian hotel. Previous press conferences from the BDA had featured studio executives commenting on the promise of the Blu-ray format. Now that the format war is over, the BDA instead chose to focus on Blu-ray's huge successes in 2008 and the format's prospects for continual growth.

Every year during CES, the Digital Entertainment Group, or, DEG, meet at an undisclosed location to celebrate the year's greatest achievements in digital entertainment. For those who might be unfamiliar with the DEG, the group is an industry lead trade association, made up of consumer electronics manufacturers and film studios, that promotes the growth of various means of delivering digital entertainment. DEG was founded in 1997 to help promote and spur the adoption of DVD. Their main focus currently is in promoting the growth of Blu-ray.

Warner Home Video has announced the technical specs and special features for the upcoming digibook Blu-ray release of 'The Matrix: 10th Anniversary', which is now due to hit store shelves on March 31st. Originally scheduled for a March 24th street, this release will feature the same technical specs and special features as the disc found in 'The Ultimate Matrix Collection'.

CES 2009: Maxell

Maxell is supporting the full line Blu-ray recordable media this year, including the 8cm Blu-ray camcorder discs used by Hitachi. They expect that, as the demand for blank Blu-ray media increases in the third and fourth quarters of this year, the pricing will begin to fall to more reasonable levels.

Unfortunately, Hitachi wasn't showing that much at CES this year. As the only company who is currently manufacturing Blu-ray camcorders, they were once again showing their line-up, but no mention was made regarding other possible Blu-ray devices (such as a Blu-ray player, for instance).

CES 2009: 3D In High Definition Is On Its Way

3D in HD is a reality in the R&D labs of most of the major AV companies. A number of companies are touting release dates for early adopters in early 2010. Although that is what the manufacturers would like, there is a problem. Everyone has their own standard and at least one company is demonstrating two 3D standards. It seems that there is only one agreement and that is a Blu-ray disc player will be central to the technology, but not necessarily compatible with the Blu-ray players that are available now.
