Before we start, I'd like to apologize for not posting my usual weekly post last week. External events consumed my available time last Tuesday, and with no time to write a proper post, I elected to skip it altogether. But we're back this week with a couple of huge hits, including the Oscar-award winning film '
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button'.
When film fans first learned that actor Brad Pitt and director David Fincher were teaming up to bring F. Scott Fitzgerald's short story to life, there was immediate excitement. The two had previously seen success with films like 'Se7en' and 'Fight Club', so it was no surprise when 'The Curios Case of Benjamin Button' was released to critical acclaim and immediate talks of Oscar wins.
Every person begins their life as a helpless infant and grows older with the passing years, with the exception of one man - Benjamin Button. Unlike a normal person, Benjamin was born as an old man, and every passing year made him one year younger. While the premise lacks complexity, the execution is superb, making for a very memorable story about one man and his curious case.
When Criterion announced that they would be preparing the home video release, Blu-ray fans quickly recognized that it would be top tier material. As Staff Reviewer Martin Liebman notes in his
review, "the disc [is] easily one of the best overall packages on the market, taking into account the strength of the film, the reference-grade technical presentation, and the inclusion of plenty of worthwhile bonus features."
The teen vampire drama '
Twilight' receives wide release today on Blu-ray. It has been available at select retailers for sometime, but in case you haven't picked up your copy yet (or addicted to Internet shopping like yours truly) , you'll be glad to know that it can now be found everywhere. Of course, those of you who are Twilight super fans were probably waiting for the '
Twilight Ultimate Collector's Set', which is available exclusively at Amazon.com.
There are numerous classic catalog titles being released today, but I have to make a special mention of '
Ferris Bueller's Day Off. A film that goes beyond comedy to show two friends who seem to learn more in one day of skipping school than the previous years attending it. While an obvious film of the 80's, its story remains relevant, even to today's Internet-addicted youth.
