Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Scream Factory and Shout Factory Announce November Releases

Scream Factory and Shout Factory have announced their November batch of releases. They are: The Chow Yun-Fat Collection Volume One, The Family Man (2000), Women in Prison Collection (1971-1985), and The Transformers: The Movie (1986).

NetBlender Announces NetBlender Live

NetBlender, the company behind the popular DoStudio authoring packages, will announce tomorrow that they will launch a new service - NetBlender Live - the second quarter of this year. The service provides smaller studios with specialized Blu-ray authoring software to integrate BD-Live features into their titles, as well as the BD-Live ready server space by which to distribute the additional content.

CES 2009: John Lasseter on Blu-ray

CES 2009: Samsung Reveals Two Sleek New Standalone BD Players

Samsung Electronics America, Inc., has announced two new players at CES 2009, including the BD-P4600, a wall mountable design which, at 1.5 inches, is also the world's slimmest BD player. This mounting capability garnered the 4600 model a 2009 CES "Best of Innovations" award at this year's show. At just over 2 inches tall, Samsung's second unveiling, the BD-P3600, sports a similarly svelte exterior.

CES 2009: Gennum – Active Connect HDMI Extender

Gennum is demonstrating their new active connect technology at CES this year, which will enable longer runs of HDMI cable without any loss in quality or introduction of signal noise. Companies such as Monster are then licensing this technology in order to provide consumers with high end connection products to meet their ever-growing home theater needs.

CES 2009: LG Announces New Blu-ray Player Model

LG has just announced their new Blu-ray player at the 2009 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada. The LG BD370, which is tentatively planned for a February 2009 release, will have DTS-HD MA and Dolby TrueHD audio output capabilities, as well as supporting video resolutions at 1080p24, 1080i60, 1080i50, and 720p, and 480 standard definition.

CES 2009: Live at the Panasonic Press Conference

Panasonic is in a festive mood this year. Not only is 2009 the first year the company will operate entirely under the Panasonic name (formerly Matsushita), but it is also the company's 50th anniversary. This year's CES press conference focused, initially, on the company's new 3D high definition technology, which was shown at the 2008 CEATEC trade show in Japan.

Who You Gonna Call? Ghostbusters Announced for Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring 'Ghostbusters' to Blu-ray for the 25th Anniversary of the film on June 16th. The film, which has recently received new transfers for both video and audio, will be presented in 2.20:1 1080p AVC accompanied by a 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtrack.

Batman Anthology Announced for Blu-ray

Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring 'Batman: The Motion Picture Anthology' to Blu-ray on March 10th. This box set will feature the four Batman feature films made between 1989-1997 - 'Batman', 'Batman Returns', 'Batman Forever', and 'Batman & Robin' - in 1.85:1 1080p VC-1 accompanied by 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtracks.

Disney Announces More Classics Coming to Blu-ray

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has announced some of the upcoming Blu-ray titles fans should expect to see released this year. Additionally, Disney has announced that all Disney-branded new releases and Platinum Edition Blu-ray titles will feature a DVD of the film, similar to the Blu-ray release of 'Sleeping Beauty: Platinum Edition'. Additionally, 14 scheduled Blu-ray titles will come package with the DisneyFile digital copy for use in portable media devices.

Optimum Announces Blu-ray Release for Gomorrah

Optimum Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Cannes Grand Jury Prize-winning film 'Gomorrah' to Blu-ray on February 9th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Technical specs for this film have not been announced at this time, but you can expect a 1080p AVC video presentation accompanied by a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

CES 2009 Sharp Press Conference

Sharp announced a number of new products planned for release in coming year; on the Blu-ray end, the company spoke about home theatre in a box 5.1 with built in Blu-ray, as well as a new line of Aquos TV monitors with built-in Blu-ray players. In addition, an environmentally friendly undertone seemed to pervade much of Sharp's press conference today.

JVC Announces First Blu-ray Player

At CES today, JVC announced that they will release their first Blu-ray Disc player, the JVC XV-PB1, this March. At the $299 price point, this BD-Live player will feature 1080p video and decoding for most audio formats, include Dolby TrueHD (DTS-HD Master Audio support was not announced at this time). More specs regarding this player are expected soon.

Vizio to Provide $200 BD-Live Player

Vizio has announced at CES that they will release the Vizio VBR100 BD-Live Blu-ray Disc player for $199 this April. The player will feature 1080p video output along with support for decoding all audio formats, including Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. We'll have more information about this player once the show officially kicks off tomorrow.

Profile 3.0 is GO! Maybe.

Technical Audio Devices (TAD), a subsidiary of Pioneer Electronics, will be demonstrating a new audio-only Blu-ray format at their booth at CES this year. This format, which will provide uncompressed 24bit 192kHz stereo audio, has not been named, though it sounds like this may be the first Blu-ray Profile 3.0 (Audio Only) demonstration.

Paramount Specs South Park and Madagascar 2 Blu-rays

Paramount Home Entertainment has revealed the technical specs and special features for the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa' and 'South Park: The Complete Twelfth Season'. 'Madagascar 2' is due to hit store shelves on February 6th, and will feature 1080p video accompanied by a 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtrack. 'South Park Season 12' will follow on March 17th and feature 1080i video accompanied by a 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtrack.

Fastmac Offers $99 Blu-ray External Drive

Fastmac, the company famous for providing hardware upgrades for Apple users, showed off a new Blu-ray External Drive at MacWorld this week. The drive, which is priced at a very attractive $99 price point, can play BD, DVD, and CD media, as well as burn DVD and CD recordable media. A version that can burn BD media is currently in works.

Raging Bull Announced for UK Blu-ray Release

MGM Home Entertainment in conjunction with 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment have announced that they will bring 'Raging Bull' to Blu-ray in the UK on February 9th. No technical specs have been announced at this time, but you can expect the release to look very similar to the upcoming US release.

Bleak House Coming to Blu-ray

BBC Home Entertainment in conjunction with Warner Home Video have announced that they will bring the BBC mini-series 'Bleak House' to Blu-ray on May 5th, day-and-date with the DVD re-release. The series, which is based on a Charles Dickens' novel, features Gillian Anderson of X-Files fame. Video will be presented in 1080p VC-1 accompanied by a Dolby Digital 2.0 soundtrack.

During the 60th Annual Academy Awards, it was almost unthinkable that an independently produced film would manhandle the top studio films of that year, but that is exactly what happened. Documenting the life of Pu Yi, 'The Last Emperor' won nine Oscars, winning ever category it was nominated. Today, Criterion provides fan with an absolutely stunning Blu-ray release of this historically important title.

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring 'Little Miss Sunshine' and 'Man on Fire' to Blu-ray in the UK on February 9th. Technical specs, while not announced, will most likely be identical to the US releases, featuring 1080p AVC video accompanied by a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

Dolby to Reveal New 3D Technology

Dolby, the company mostly know for its audio codecs Dolby Digital and Dolby TrueHD, will be presenting a new 3D technology at CES this year. Competing with other 3D technologies, Dolby claims its tech will work with any standard 3D display - which are currently available from both Samsung and Mitsubishi - connected to a standard Blu-ray Disc player.

Samsung to Reveal New Blu-ray Players at CES

Samsung Electronics will reveal a new Blu-ray Disc player at CES this year which claims to be the world's thinnest. At only 39mm in height, early pictures of the device show a piano black top which is uniquely curved. No technical details have been released regarding the player, though we should hear more tomorrow at Samsung's pre-CES press conference.

Seven Pounds Coming this March

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Will Smith drama 'Seven Pounds' to Blu-ray on March 17th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Sony has put this film on the fast track to home video being that it was released in theaters only a few weeks ago. Video will be presented in 2.40:1 1080p AVC accompanied by a 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtrack.
