This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Scream Factory and Shout Factory have announced their November batch of releases. They are: The Chow Yun-Fat Collection Volume One, The Family Man (2000), Women in Prison Collection (1971-1985), and The Transformers: The Movie (1986).

Ice Cream Man 4K Blu-ray

Alliance Entertainment is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Eli Roth's Ice Cream Man (2026), starring Ari Millen, Charlie Zeltzer, Shiloh O'Reilly, Sarah Abbott, and Benjamin Byron Davis. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

The Rock 30th Anniversary 4K Blu-ray

Twentieth Century Studios plans to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Michael Bay's The Rock (1996) with a new combo pack release, which is expected to arrive on the market before the end of the year.

Iron Man 3

In addition to unveiling a new poster today, Disney has revealed that a new sneak peek for director Shane Black's Iron Man 3 will be televised on CBS during the Super Bowl XLVII broadcast on Sunday, February 3rd. The first film in Phase Two of Marvel's Cinematic Universe reunites Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle, and is set to open in U.S. theaters on May 3rd.

Blu-ray Sales, January 21-27: End of Watch Comes Home to Top Spot

For the week that ended on January 27th, Universal Studios had the top Blu-ray and overall package media sales with its release of End of Watch. Director David Ayer's cop drama netted the studio a healthy profit when it premiered theatrically last September - it grossed over $41 million domestically and had an estimated production budget of only $7 million. Of its total home media sales, 49% came from the HD format.

Down the Shore Blu-ray

Anchor Bay Films has announced the Blu-ray release of director Harold Guskin's Down the Shore, a story of tough New Jersey families and friends starring James Gandolfini, Famke Janssen, Joe Pope and Eduardo Costa. The dramatic thriller arrives on Blu-ray on April 9th, after an exclusive theatrical engagement on April 5th.

StudioCanal have revealed that they are planning to bring to Blu-ray acclaimed director Jacques Audiard's (A Prophet, The Beat That My Heart Skipped) latest film De rouille et d'os a.k.a Rust and Bone (2012), starring Marion Cotillard, Matthias Schoenaerts and Armand Verdure. The preliminary release date set by the studio is February 25th.

Heaven's Gate Blu-ray

Independent British distributors Second Sight Films have revealed that they are planning to bring to Blu-ray Michael Cimino's controversial film Heaven's Gate (1980), starring Kris Kristofferson, Christopher Walken, John Hurt, and Isabelle Huppert. The distributors are yet to make a formal announcement detailing this upcoming release.

Wreck-It Ralph Theatrical Short: Paperman

Walt Disney Home Entertainment has made Paperman available online in its entirety. The Oscar-nominated theatrical short debuted in front of Best Animated Feature nominee Wreck-It Ralph, and is included on the 2D and 4-disc Ultimate Collector's Edition 3D/2D Combo Pack releases of the 52nd Walt Disney animated classic feature, both of which arrive on March 5, 2013.

Skyfall Writers Join Refn for Barbarella Series

Last year, Gaumont International Television, the Los Angeles based arm of the French studio, and Martha De Laurentiis announced that they have teamed up to bring the iconic Barbarella to the small screen. Earlier today, Gaumont revealed that Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, the writers of the last five Bond films, have also joined the project.

Acclaimed director Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight Trilogy) has revealed his favorite Criterion titles. Somewhat surprisingly, Criterion's recent Blu-ray release of his excellent first feature film Following (1998) isn't amongst them, but the director has chosen such important classics as 12 Angry Men, The Testament of Dr. Mabuse, and Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence.

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has officially announced and detained its upcoming 2D and 3D Blu-ray releases of Ang Lee's Life of Pi (2012), starring Suraj Sharma, Irrfan Khan, Adil Hussain, and Gérard Depardieu. The releases will be available for purchase on March 12th.

Synapse to Release Two Dario Argento Films

Independent distributors Synapse Films have revealed that they are planning to bring to Blu-ray two cult films directed by Italian director Dario Argento: Tenebrae (1982), starring Anthony Franciosa, Giuliano Gemma and Christian Borromeo, and Phenomena (1985), starring Jennifer Connelly, Donald Pleasence and Daria Nicolodi. Both are expected to appear on the market later in 2013.

Restored Scarecrow Heading Back to the Big Screen

Park Circus announced today that Jerry Schatzberg's little seen American classic Scarecrow (1973), starring Gene Hackman, Al Pacino and Dorothy Tristan, will be re-released in 2013, opening at BFI Southbank and selected cinemas nationwide. The film has been newly restored by Warner Bros. Pictures.

The British Film Institute has revealed that it is planning to add five titles to its impressive Blu-ray catalog between April and June: a collection of films by B.S. Johnson, John Krish's Captured (1959), Roberto Rossellini's Stromboli (1949), Pier Paolo Pasolini's Theorem (1968), and Anthony Asquith's Underground (1929).
