This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Scream Factory and Shout Factory have announced their November batch of releases. They are: The Chow Yun-Fat Collection Volume One, The Family Man (2000), Women in Prison Collection (1971-1985), and The Transformers: The Movie (1986).

Ice Cream Man 4K Blu-ray

Alliance Entertainment is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Eli Roth's Ice Cream Man (2026), starring Ari Millen, Charlie Zeltzer, Shiloh O'Reilly, Sarah Abbott, and Benjamin Byron Davis. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

The Rock 30th Anniversary 4K Blu-ray

Twentieth Century Studios plans to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Michael Bay's The Rock (1996) with a new combo pack release, which is expected to arrive on the market before the end of the year.

Sony Classics Acquires Richard Linklater's Before Midnight

Sony Classics has acquired the U.S. distribution rights to director Richard Linklater's Before Midnight (2013), starring Ethan Hawke, Julie Delpy and Seamus Davey-Fitzpatrick. The rights for the previous two films, Before Sunrise (1995) and Before Sunset (2004), are controlled by Warner Brothers.

Independent distributors Music Box Films have revealed that they are planning to bring to Blu-ray Sean Baker's film Starlet (2012), starring Dree Hemingway, Besedka Johnson and James Ransone. The preliminary release date set by the distributors is May 7th.

Section23 Films, Houston-based distributor of Sentai Filmworks anime, has announced the Blu-ray releases of Kids on the Slope: Complete Collection, Colorful: The Motion Picture, K-On! The Movie and Phi-Brain: Season 1: Collection 2. Section23 is releasing one title per week throughout the month of May.

A new trailer has been released for Joel and Ethan Coen's latest project, Inside Llewyn Davis (2013), starring Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, Justin Timberlake, Garrett Hedlund, John Goodman and F. Murray Abraham. The film, which is also based on a script by the Coen brothers, and apparently still without a distributor, tells the story of a folk singer living in 60s New York.

Fringe: The Complete Fifth Season and The Complete Series Blu-ray Sets (Updated)

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has announced the Blu-ray releases of Fringe: The Complete Fifth and Final Season and Fringe: The Complete Series, a 20-disc box set that bundles all five seasons in as yet unrevealed packaging. Both sets arrive on May 7, 2013.

Blu-ray Sales, January 14-20: Taken 2 Escapes to Number One

For the week that ended on January 20th, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment had the top Blu-ray and overall package media sales with its release of Taken 2. This sequel to the 2008 action hit netted Fox a healthy profit when it premiered theatrically last October - it grossed over $374 million worldwide on top of its estimated $45 million budget. Of its total home media sales, 44% came from the HD format.

In anticipation of the upcoming Blu-ray release of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 2, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has released a trio of video interviews with voice actors Peter Weller (Batman), Michael Emerson (The Joker) and Mark Valley (Superman), as well as a new clip from the film in which The Joker makes an appearance on a late night talk show. Part 2 arrives on Blu-ray on January 29, 2103.
