Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Nine Inch Nails to Offer Blu-ray Music Release

Trent Reznor has revealed, via his website, that the latest Nine Inch Nails album "Ghosts I-IV" will receive deluxe edition packaging that will include a Blu-ray release of all 36 tracks in stunning 96kHz/24-bit quality. When the disc is played in your Blu-ray player, it will display a slide show to accompany the music. Trent Reznor has been a pioneer in providing high definition content to fans, to include the Blu-ray release of the Nine Inch Nails concert 'Beside You In Time'.

Blue Underground, Now With More Blu

Blue Underground, an independent cult film content provider, has revealed that they have numerous titles from their library in various stages of pre-production for Blu-ray release. While no specific titles or release dates were announced at this time, you can expect a wide variety of cult classics to make their way to Blu-ray in the coming months.

Check Disc and BluFocus Align For Blu-ray Testing

Check Disc Labs has announced a strategic alliance with BluFocus, Inc. in order to produce an advanced Blu-ray testing and management services company which will redefine the current testing process. Check Disc, who has been a leader in DVD quality control pre-production testing since 2002, will benefit from BluFocus' highly specialized quality control processes, first implemented last year when the company was formed.

MediaInVision Offers Blu-ray Music Production

MediaInVision Creative Group has revealed that they now offer professional audio encoding and mastering for Blu-ray music production to independent recording artists. The Blu-ray Disc spec allows for storage of high resolution audio storage at 96kHz/24-bit for eight channels of audio, which provides ultra-realistic sound reproduction. MediaInVision is making use of this spec in order to produce music titles on the Blu-ray format.

New Line Announces The Orphanage for Blu-ray

New Line Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Guillermo Del Toro produced film 'The Orphanage' to Blu-ray on April 22nd, day-and-date with the DVD release. No specs have been announced for the title, but it will be presented in Spanish with English subtitles (similar to how 'Pan's Labyrinth', a film directed by Del Toro, was released). The only extras announced thus far will be behind the scenes featurettes.

First Sunday Announced for Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Ice Cube and Tracy Morgan comedy 'First Sunday' to Blu-ray on May 6th, day-and-date with the DVD release. No specs have been announced at this time, but expect 1080p AVC video accompanied by TrueHD audio. Extras include deleted scenes, outtakes, featurettes, and exclusive to the Blu-ray, a fact track.

Samsung BD-P1500 Blu-ray Player Due in April

The German AV website Area DVD has revealed that the upcoming Samsung BD-P1500 is expect to hit German stores sometime this April. The player, which was initially expected to be released this summer, will support BonusView (Profile v1.1) features and retail for around $400. A HDMI v1.3 connection will allow for the bit streaming of both Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD Master Audio. An Ethernet port will be provided for updating firmware.

Paramount to Resume Blu-ray Releases Soon

Paramount Home Entertainment has revealed that March 4th will mark the last titles the studio releases on the HD DVD format. All titles announced with release dates after March 4th have been canceled for their HD DVD releases (the DVD releases will stay on schedule). This includes the March 11th release of Dreamworks' 'Bee Movie' and the April 1st release of 'Sweeney Todd'.

Warner Offers Ocean's 11 & 12 Separately

Warner Home Video has announced that they will offer both 'Ocean's 11' and 'Ocean's 12' as separate Blu-ray releases on April 29th. Until now, the first two Ocean's movies were only available as part of a trilogy gift set released last November. Warner will now gives fans the opportunity to purchase the films separately, if they prefer to not own all three films together.

Panasonic Showcases Blu-ray for NASCAR Fans

This past weekend at Auto Club Speedway in California, Panasonic and United Artists showcased their year-long partnership as both companies celebrate their 90th Anniversaries. Panasonic VP of Corporate Development Eisuke Tsuyuzaki was at the event to tell NASCAR patrons visiting the "Fan Zone" about Panasonic and Blu-ray. Scott Hettrick was there filming the event, and he has posted his footage on Hollywood in Hi-Def.

Verbatim Increase Blu-ray Production

Mitsubishi Kagaku Media, more universally known as Verbatim, has announced the addition of a BD-R line to their Singapore processing plant in the July/August timeframe. They currently output 200,000 discs per month at their Mizsushima factory, and with the addition of their new line, that output will increase to 700,000 per month.

Netflix Beefs Up Blu-ray Offerings

In a statement given by the online movie rental company increasing projected subscribers, Netflix mentioned that they will increase their Blu-ray catalog by as many as 1,500 titles. Currently, Netflix maintains about 400 Blu-ray titles in their rental database. The plus-up in available titles is due to increased demand for high definition movies and the culmination of the format war.

NetBlender Adds Blu-ray Support

NetBlender has announced that they will add Blu-ray support to their DoStudio line of authoring software. DoStudio Authoring Edition (DSA), which in expected to be released this May, will feature an easy-to-learn GUI interface and support for Adobe Photoshop importing. BonusView support will be added to the package in the Fall, followed by BD-Live support which is expected to be released early next year.

Dragon Tiger Gate Coming to Blu-ray

Tai Seng Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Hong Kong martial arts film 'Dragon Tiger Gate' to Blu-ray on May 27th. Specs include a 7.1 Cantonese track, as well as 5.1 Mandarin and English tracks. Extras include an audio commentary, multiple featurettes, deleted scenes, interviews, photo gallery, and premiere highlights.

27 Dresses, Short Circuit Coming to Blu-ray

Over at TVGuide.com, Dave Lambert of TVShowsonDVD.com fame posted some information about upcoming Blu-ray releases. The Katherine Heigl film '27 Dresses' will be released for Blu-ray by Fox on April 29th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Also revealed, is that the 80's cult classic 'Short Circuit' will be released for Blu-ray by Image Entertainment on May 20th.

Warner Announces One Missed Call

Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring the horror film 'One Missed Call' to Blu-ray on April 22nd, day-and-date with the DVD release. No video or audio specs have been announced at this time, but expect this BD-25 to have 1080p VC-1 video with a Dolby Digital surround sound track. No special features have been announced at this time.

Blue Man Group Blu-ray Coming Soon

In press release announcing their upcoming DVD/CD release of the Blue Man Group's 'How to be a Megastar Live!' concert, Rhino Records has revealed that they will also be bringing the concert to Blu-ray. No specs or track list has been announced for that upcoming release, but with the DVD featuring 22 songs, the Blu-ray has the potential to be something special.

There Will Be Blood Coming to Blu-ray

A trailer for the Oscar Award-winning film 'There Will Be Blood' has shown up on the HiHD website. The film, which is distributed by Paramount, may be the first film to see Blu-ray release since the studio announced they would once again release their films on the high definition format. Nothing official has come from the studio, but being that Sony, Disney, and Fox operate HiHD, a press release should be forthcoming.

Shall We Dance Announced for Blu-ray

Buena Vista Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring 'Shall We Dance' to Blu-ray on May 6th. Pressed on a BD-50, video will be presented as 1.85:1 1080p AVC accompanied by 5.1 PCM audio. Extras include audio commentary with director Peter Chelsom, deleted scenes, Pussycat Dolls "Sway" music video, and the featurettes "Behind the Scenes of Shall We Dance", "Beginner's Ballroom", and "The Music of Shall We Dance".

Sony Announces Two New Blu-ray Players

Sony Electronics has announced two new players to their Blu-ray line, the BDP-S350 and the BDP-S550. When released, both will not only be BonusView (Profile v1.1) players, but will also be BD-Live (Profile v2.0) ready, meaning they can be updated via firmware to full BD-Live compatibility. The BDP-S350 will ship sometime in the Summer for $400, followed in the Fall by the BDP-S550 for $500.

Goldmund Announces Ultra High-End Blu-ray Player

Goldmund, a Swiss A/V manufacturer, has announced the Eidos 20 BD, an ultra high-end Blu-ray Disc player. The player will feature many Goldmund proprietary technologies, including "AC Curator", a power supply circuit which dramatically improves picture and sound stability, "Mechanical Grounding" construction, which removes from the player mechanism spurious vibrations that cause blurring of the video signal, and "Magnetic Damper", a device used to lower reading errors.

Batman: Gotham Knight Revealed

Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring 'Batman: Gotham Knight' to Blu-ray on July 8th, day-and-date with the DVD release. The direct-to-video animated release will feature numerous animated segments which have been written a directed by different production teams, including those behind the film releases of 'Batman Begins' and 'The Dark Knight' as well as the award winning 'Batman: The Animated Series'.

PLDS Announce Portable Blu-ray Drive

PLDS (Philips & Lite-On Digital Solutions) has announced that they will release a portable Blu-ray drive, the DX-401S. This BD-ROM drive will connect to any PC via a USB 2.0 cable enabling users to watch any Blu-ray movie on their computer without installing a Blu-ray drive. No price has been given at this time for the device, which is expected to be released sometime in April.

Shawshank Redemption Announced Again

In an extremely early announcement, Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring 'Shawshank Redemption' to Blu-ray on November 4th. The film, which is currently rated the #2 movie of all time on IMDB.com, has been announced before, only to be removed from the release slate. This time, a date has been assigned, but given how far off the release is slated, expect details to change.

Disney Announces National Treasure Films for Blu-ray

Buena Vista Home Entertainment has announced that they will release 'National Treasure' and its sequel 'National Treasure: Book of Secrets' for Blu-ray on May 20th. Both blockbuster films will get special two-disc treatment and features exclusive Blu-ray extras not available on the DVD releases. Video will be presented in 2.35:1 1080p AVC accompanied by 5.1 PCM audio.

Sea Monsters Announced for Blu-ray

National Geographic has announced that they will bring the documentary 'Sea Monsters' to Blu-ray on June 10th, day-and-date with the DVD release. The disc will be pressed on a BD-25 and utilize VC-1 video encoding. No additional specs have been announced at this time. No extra features have been announced at this time.

Edion Reveals Trade-Up Plan

Edion, a Japanese retailer who operates 1000 stores across Japan, has announced that during March they will allow those customers who purchased an HD DVD player to trade up to a Blu-ray player for only the difference in retail price. While HD DVD sales could only be considered dismal at best in Japan, this offer allows those who did purchase the now dead format to go Blu-ray with out the common penalty of being an early adopter.

Saawariya Gets Re-Announced for Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has re-announced the Blu-ray release of the hit Indian film 'Saawariya', now expected to arrive on store shelves May 6th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Originally announced for a March 15th release, video will be presented in 2.40:1 1080p AVC accompanied by both English and Hindi 5.1 Dolby TrueHD tracks. Extras include "Making the Music" featurette and video from the premiere.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will release the Harrison Ford film 'The Devil's Own' for Blu-ray on May 6th. Video will be presented in 2.40:1 1080p AVC, and be accompanied by a 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtrack. No extras have been announced at this time, but expect all the extras from the previous DVD release to be ported to the Blu-ray.
