Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Patton Gets Detailed for Blu-ray

Fox Home Entertainment has revealed the the specs and special features that will be included with the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Patton', due to hit store shelves on June 3rd. Video will be presented in 1080p AVC and be accompanied by a DTS-HD Master Audio lossless soundtrack. In order to provide all extra content on this release, Fox will be issuing this title as a two disc set.

Dirty Harry Full Specs for Blu-ray Box

Warner Home Video has officially announced the Blu-ray release of the 'Dirty Harry: Ultimate Collector's Edition' box set with a full range of special features for each disc, including extras only available when you purchase the box set. They have also confirmed that the special edition release of the original 'Dirty Harry' will be the only title to be released separately on Blu-ray, with all other "Dirty Harry" film available in high definition only in the box set.

Weeds Season 3 Coming to Blu-ray

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has announced that they will release the highly acclaimed 'Weeds: Season 3' for Blu-ray on June 3rd, day-and-date with the DVD release. Video will be presented in widescreen and be accompanied by 7.1 PCM audio. Extras includes audio commentary and featurettes such as "Good Morning, Agrestic!" and much more. A full list of extra features is expected to be released shortly.

Sony Announces Anger Management for Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Adam Sandler/Jack Nicholson film 'Anger Management' to Blu-ray on May 20th. Video will be presented as 2.40:1 1080p AVC accompanies by a Dolby TrueHD soundtrack. Extras include audio commentary with Adam Sandler and Peter Segal, the behind-the-scenes featurette "Skull Session", the featurette "My Buddy, Jack", deleted scenes, and a gag reel.

Nature Coming to Blu-ray

Questar has announced that they will bring the popular PBS series 'Nature' to Blu-ray on May 20th. Each BD-25 will feature two similarly themed episodes of the series in 1.78:1 1080p accompanied by Dolby Digital soundtrack. The first four releases are entitled, 'Desert Lion', 'In the Valley of the Wolves', 'Under Antarctic Ice', and 'Shark Mountain'. No special features have been announced at this time.

Rambo First Lionsgate Title to Feature iTunes

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has announced that the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Rambo' will be their first title to feature a digital copy of the film in the popular iTunes format. With this feature, those who purchase the disc will be able to copy the film legally to their iTunes based electronics (such as an iPod or iPhone). 'Rambo', the forth film in the popular Sylvester Stallone series, is currently scheduled to be released on May 27th.

Otis Announced for Blu-ray at Premier

Immediately following the premier of 'Otis', it was announced that Warner Home Video would release the Raw Feed film for Blu-ray on June 10th, day-and-date with the DVD release. This is the second Raw Feed film to be released on Blu-ray, the first being the April 22nd release of 'Sublime'. No specs or special features have been announced at this time, but the film will be released in its unrated form.

Warner Promises 10 Blu-ray/Book Combos This Year

Warner Home Video has revealed that they plan to issue 10 Blu-ray/coffee book combination releases this year. The two announced so far, will be the March 25th release of 'Bonnie and Clyde' and the June 3rd release of 'Dirty Harry' (not the previously revealed box set). Other releases getting similar treatment will be 'Woodstock', releases from the 'Harry Potter' franchise, 'Bladerunner' (already released on Blu-ray as a collection), 'Gone with the Wind' and 'North by Northwest'.

Extras for Dirty Harry Blu-ray Box Revealed

An article in Home Media Magazine has revealed the special features which will accompany the five films being released as part of the 'Dirty Harry Ultimate Collector's Edition' box set. The five-disc set will contain all five Dirty Harry films presented as "deluxe editions" along with audio commentary from Clint Eastwood and Richard Schickel, an interviews gallery, the TV special "Clint Eastwood: The Man from Malpaso", and the featurettes "The Long Shadow of Dirty Harry" and "Dirty Harry: The Original and Dirty Harry Way".

Disc Unveils Blu-ray Archiver

Disc, a German optical disc storage manufacturer, has revealed a jukebox-style Blu-ray archiver named "Blu-safe". The device, which can hold up to 15 Blu-ray discs, connects to a computer via USB and can store up to 750GB of storage. An advantage of using the Blu-safe over similar hard drive based storage is that it uses up to 80% less energy to operate.

HiHD: Independence Day Features Revealed

Over at Hollywood in Hi-Def, Scott Hettrick has posted some video he shot when Van Ling, one of the prominent producers of extra content for home video releases, came to his home to show off the special features of the upcoming Fox Blu-ray release of 'Independence Day'. During the six minutes of video, Van walks you through some of the special features on the disc, including the BD-Java "Alien Scavenger Hunt" game.

Specs Announced for 27 Dresses

Fox Home Entertainment has announced the specs for their upcoming Blu-ray release of the Katerine Heigl film '27 Dresses', which will be released on April 29th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Video will be presented in 1080p AVC accompanied by a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. Extras will include four featurettes - "The Wedding Party", "You'll Never Wear That Again", "Jane's World", and "The Running of the Brides" - along with a collection of four deleted scenes.

Sony in Talks with Microsoft, Apple About Blu-ray

Sony Electronics US President Stan Glasgow has revealed that the company is currently in talks with software giant Microsoft with regards to the Blu-ray format. No specific products were mentioned, but it is expected that Microsoft will offer a Blu-ray X-box 360 Add-on, similar to what they offered for the now dead HD DVD format. As it stands, Microsoft's gaming console is at a distinct disadvantage to Sony's PlayStation 3 which includes a Blu-ray player in every console.

Samsung Cancels BD-UP5500

Samsung has announced that they have canceled plans to introduce their second generation hybrid Blu-ray and HD DVD player, the Samsung BD-UP5500, due to Blu-ray winning the format war. Their first hybrid player, the Samsung BD-UP5000, was riddled with compatibility issues, and the time line to replace the player was escalated. With the successor now canceled, it appears Samsung will slowly leave the dual format player market.

May 27th is Blu-ray Rambo Day

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has announced that they will release 'Rambo' on Blu-ray May 27th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Additionally, they will release 'Rambo: First Blood Part II' and 'Rambo III' on Blu-ray the same day. They will join the previously released 'First Blood' Blu-ray disc to complete the saga. Specs include 1080p video accompanied by a 7.1 PCM soundtrack.

DEG to Promote Blu-ray

The Digital Entertainment Group (DEG) has announced that they will launch consumer education, retail training, and public relations activities with the goal of propelling Blu-ray into a mainstream format. They want to increase awareness of the Blu-ray format, as well as educate about the advantages over DVD. This will help promote a unified voice in support of the high definition format.

Warner Announces P.S. I Love You

Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring the Hillary Swank romantic comedy 'P.S. I Love You' to Blu-ray on May 6th, day-and-date with the DVD release. No specs have been announced for the release, which will be presented on a BD-25, but expect the typical VC-1 1080p encode from Warner. Extras include a James Blunt music video, A Conversation with Cecilia Ahern, additional scenes, and something called "The Name of the Game is Snaps".

Tartan Announces Future Blu-ray Plans

Tartan Home Video has revealed the next six titles to be released in the UK on the Blu-ray format. April 14th will see the release of 'A Tale of Two Sisters', followed on the 28th by 'Paranoid Park'. The next two films, both by Park Chan-wook (writer/director of 'Oldboy'), will be ' Lady Vengeance' and 'I'm a Cyborg', both to be released on May 26th. Finally, on June 26th, both 'The Proposition' and 'Sky Blue' will see Blu-ray release.

Daft Punk Releases Electroma on Blu-ray

Vice Records is planning to release the Daft Punk film 'Electroma' for Blu-ray on July 22nd, day-and-date with the US DVD release. No specs have been announced at this time, but the release has "been specifically mastered for optimal visual and audio fidelity on Blu-ray". The title will come in a special steelbook case packaging and include a 40-page photo booklet which was bound solely for this release.

Sony Promotes Blu-ray Exchange in Switzerland

Sony Electronics Switzerland is offering HD DVD owner the chance to trade in their now defunct HD DVD players for a Blu-ray player. When you buy either a Sony BDP-S300 or BDP-S500 Blu-ray Disc Player, you can send in your HD DVD player (to be recycled by Sony) purchased before February 29th of this year and receive a check for 200 Swiss Francs (~$190) and both 'Spider-man' and 'Pirates of the Caribbean' trilogies on Blu-ray.

Warner Home Video has revealed that they will release 'Dirty Harry: The Ultimate Collection' for Blu-ray on June 3rd, day-and-date with the DVD re-release. No specs have been announced at this time, but the set will include Blu-ray releases of 'Dirty Harry', 'Magnum Force', 'The Enforcer', 'Sudden Impact' and 'The Dead Pool'. No extras have been announced at this time, but Warner promises that the box set will be loaded with special features.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring Francis Ford Coppola's film 'Youth Without Youth' to Blu-ray on May 13th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Video will be presented in 2.35:1 1080p AVC accompanies by a Dolby TrueHD soundtrack. Extras include audio commentary with Coppola, and the two featurettes "Making of Youth Without Youth" and "The Music of Youth Without Youth".

Eros Int. Announces Heyy Babyy on Blu-ray

Eros International, a leader in Indian media and entertainment, has announced that 'Heyy Babyy' is now available for purchase on Blu-ray. The film was remastered directly from the negative with supervision from director Sajid Khan. Extras include a four-hour documentary, detailing every aspect of making a big-budget Bollywood film, as well as audio commentary with the film's stars and director.

The Orphanage Gets Detailed

New Line Home Entertainment has issues detailed specs regarding the Blu-ray release of the Guillermo Del Toro produced film 'The Orphanage', currently scheduled to hit store shelves on April 22nd. Video will be presented in 2.35:1 1080p accompanied by a 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio Spanish soundtrack. Extras include the two featurettes "When Laura Grew Up: Constructing The Orphanage" and "Horror in the Unknown: Make-Up", as well as rehearsal footage, video segments about the filmmakers, and a stills gallery.

Fearless Planet Gets Dated for Blu-ray

Image Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Discovery Channel 6-part documentary 'Fearless Planet' to Blu-ray on June 3rd, day-and-date with the DVD release. No specs have been announced at this time, but the six parts will span two separate discs and include "Hawaii", "Alaska", "The Sahara Desert", "Earth Story", "The Great Barrier Reef" and "The Grand Canyon".

Panasonic BD30E Blu-ray Player Gets DivX Certified

DivX has revealed that the upcoming Panasonic DMP-BD30E is expected to be the first DivX certified Blu-ray player released for Europe and Russia. The player, which is expected to be a clone of current Panasonic DMP-BD30 with added DivX functionality, has not been priced, but is expected to be released this month in both Europe and Russia.

Broadcom Acquires Sunext Design for Blu-ray Solutions

Broadcom has announced that they have acquired optical disc technology specialist Sunext Design in order to provide future single chip Blu-ray player and recorder solutions. In the past, Broadcom has specialized in providing back-end solutions to manufacturers. With this acquisition, they will have rights to advanced front-end solutions, allowing them to provide a total Blu-ray package to electronics manufacturers.

BD-ROM to Get Industry Push

Leading Taiwan-based optical disc drive manufacturers are expected to shift focus from producing Blu-ray drives with read/write capabilities to BD-ROM drives which provide only read capability. The drives, which can be made cheaper, more efficiently, and for less money than their read/write counterparts, are expected to become the main focus of manufacturers such as Pioneer, HP, Acer and Asustek in the second quarter of this year.
