Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Sony Adds D-Box Support

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has revealed the specs for the upcoming Blu-ray release of the Arnold Schwarzenegger film 'The 6th Day', and a surprise addition will be support for D-Box home theater seating. Joining other film studios who include the motion software on their Blu-ray releases, Sony is the latest to provide support for the unique home theater experience.

Genius Products Hints at Blu-ray Support

Trevor Drinkwater, CEO of Genius Products, stated during a company presentation that "Blu-ray is the last format in, and that has cleared the way for the industry to get aggressive around next generation DVD." Genius Products distributes films for studios such as The Weinstein Company and Tartan Films.

Opus Arte Announces First Blu-ray Title

Opus Arte has announced that they will bring 'Mendelssohn: A Midsummer Night's Dream' to Blu-ray on March 25th. Opus Arte is a leading distributor of fine art performances in high definition. Video will be presented in 1080i and be accompanied by both 5.1 and 2.0 PCM soundtracks. Extras include a Cast Gallery.

Onkyo Switches to Blu-ray

Onkyo Corporation has announced that they have abandoned the HD DVD format and will now shift focus towards development of a Blu-ray player. The Onkyo HD DVD player shared most parts with Toshiba's HD DVD players, and since those players are now out of production, Onkyo is forced to discontinue development and production of their player as well.

Paramount Comes Back to Blu-ray

In a statement sent exclusively to The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount Home Entertainment has revealed that they will return to releasing their films on Blu-ray. Initially supporting both high definition formats, Paramount became HD DVD exclusive in a controversial move by the studio in Fall of last year. With Universal Studios announcing their support of Blu-ray earlier this week, Paramount completes the last piece of the puzzle as the sixth and final major studio to support the Blu-ray format.

Blu-ray Player Sales Soar in UK

UK online retailers Play.com and Dixons.co.uk have both reported large spikes in Blu-ray player interest from their customers since Toshiba officially announced they would no longer be supporting the HD DVD format, effectively declaring Blu-ray the winner of the high definition format war. Dixons is reporting that searches for Blu-ray player are up 150%, while Play.com is reporting that Player sales the day of the announcement were up 700%.

Appleseed Ex Machina Gets Detailed

Warner Home Video has revealed the specs and extras for the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Appleseed Ex Machina', due to hit store shelves March 11th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Video will be presented in 1.78:1 VC-1 1080p with a Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack. Extras include audio commentary and two featurettes - "Team-Up: John Woo and Shinji Aramaki," "Revolution: Animating Ex Machina". The Blu-ray release will have two additional featurettes over the DVD: "Shirow's Journey: The Appleseed Chronicles" and "Appleseed Ex Machina: East Meets West."

BBC's Ganges Gets New Date

Warner Home Video has announced that they will release the BBC documentary 'Ganges' for Blu-ray on July 1st, day-and-date with the DVD release. The title, which was initially scheduled for January, will come on a BD-25 and feature 1.85:1 1080p video encoded using VC-1 and a Dolby Digital soundtrack. Extras mirror the DVD with only deleted scenes available.

Juno Gets Blu-ray Release

Fox Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Academy Award nominated comedy 'Juno' to Blu-ray on April 15th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Video will be presented as 1.85:1 1080p AVC accompanied by a DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack on a BD-50. Also included will be a digital copy of the film, which will allow viewers to watch the film on their portable devices.

Warner Announces Sublime for Blu-ray Release

Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring the Raw Feed Series direct-to-video film 'Sublime' to Blu-ray on April 22nd. The title will come as an uncut version on a BD-25 utlizing VC-1 video encoding and Dolby Digital audio. Extras include an audio commentary, Bird York's music video of "Have No Fear", and the two featurettes "Surgical Exorcism" and "The Shebeen Josie".

Ensequence and SPHE Join For Blu-ray Authoring

Ensequence and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment (SPHE) have jointly announced an agreement whereby SPHE will license and resell Ensequence on-Q Create software suite to both major studios and independent Blu-ray developers. The software, which will be integrated into SPHE's existing Blu-print software package, will allow developers to easily and quickly add BD-Java content to their Blu-ray releases without the necessity for advanced training on the Java language.

Amazon Makes Blu-ray Digital Format of Choice

Amazon has announced that they will now support Blu-ray as the high definition digital format of choice for consumers. This change in policy will result in Amazon more prominently promoting the Blu-ray format - including both players and movies - on its website. Amazon.com has become a favorite source of Blu-ray titles for fans, because of their lower pricing and excellent customer service.

Universal Preparing Titles for Blu-ray

The statement that Blu-ray fans have been waiting for nearly two years to hear, president of Universal Studios Home Entertainment Craig Kornblau has announced that Universal Studios will begin distributing their films on the Blu-ray format. He commented, "While Universal values the close partnership we have shared with Toshiba, it is time to turn our focus to releasing new and catalog titles on Blu-ray."

BDA Comments on the End of the Format War

The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) has made an official statement regarding Toshiba's announcement that they would no longer be supporting the HD DVD format. Andy Parsons, Chairman, Blu-ray Disc Association U.S. Promotions Committee commented, "We in the Blu-ray Disc Association are very happy that this long format war is officially over. Now the task ahead for our member companies is to promote the Blu-ray Disc format as the best way to bring premier quality high definition content into consumers' lives."

Toshiba Resigns from Format War; Blu-ray Wins! (Updated)

Sources close to the situation have alerted Blu-ray.com that Toshiba is expected announce at a press conference to be held at 5pm (local time) in Tokyo, Japan that they have ended their support of the HD DVD format. Toshiba will announce that effective immediately, production of HD DVD hardware, software, and authoring tools will cease, and that sales and support of existing products will end sometime in March.

First Knight Announced for Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Jerry Zucker film 'First Knight' to Blu-ray on April 29th, day-and-date with the Special Edition DVD release. Video will be presented in 1.85:1 1080p AVC accompanied by a Dolby TrueHD sountrack. Extras include audio commentary with director Jerry Zucker and producer Hunt Lowry, Authurian Legend commentary, the featurettes "Making of First Knight" and "In Shining Armor: Knights in Training", and deleted scenes.

Fox Announces Date and Specs for Master and Commander

Fox Home Entertainment has announced a release date and specs for their upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World', as well as 'Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid' and 'Mrs. Doubtfire'. All three titles will be released on May 13th, and come with an extensive amount of extra features.

Samsung to Focus on Blu-ray

Samsung Electronics has revealed that they will start focusing on production of Blu-ray hardware due to recent movements in the high definition movie market. An official with the company stated, "Samsung is expected to show more interests in Blu-ray products than rival HD DVD." The company had recently released the dual format BD-UP5000 with plans to release another shortly.

Niveus Goes Blu-ray Exclusive

Niveus, producer of home media servers, has announced that effective immediately they will offer Blu-ray drives on all of their server products and will begin phasing out their HD DVD supplies. As a former HD DVD supporter, the company is abandoning the format due to consumer demand for Blu-ray products and current market shifting towards Blu-ray.

BDA Praises Wal-Mart on Blu-ray Exclusivity

The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) US Promotions Committee chairman Andy Parsons has released a statement regarding Wal-Mart's announcement that beginning this June they will be exclusively supporting Blu-ray: "Retailers have a tremendous impact on consumer preferences, and as the world's largest retailer, Wal-Mart's reach and leadership are unparalleled. Their decision to support only Blu-ray, particularly in light of the string of similar announcements from the content and retail communities over the last six weeks, seems to us to be a very clear statement that Blu-ray Disc has emerged as the format of choice for high definition home entertainment."

Wal-Mart to Exclusively Support Blu-ray

Wal-Mart has confirmed with Blu-ray.com that beginning in June the world's largest retailer will only stock Blu-ray players and movies. Over the next few months, they will phase out all HD DVD products and reorganize their stores to focus on Blu-ray. This move comes days after similar statements of support for Blu-ray by Internet movie rental site Netflix and retailer Best Buy.

Both Alien vs Predator Movies See Blu-ray Release

Fox Home Entertainment has announced that they will release 'Alien vs Predator: Requiem' for Blu-ray on April 15th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Additionally, Fox will reissue the original 'Alien vs Predator' movie on the same day as a Collector's Edition Unrated release. Fans will have the choice of purchasing the films separately (for those who don't want to upgrade their existing 'Alien vs Predator' Blu-ray) or as a two-pack.

Buffalo Announces Blu-ray Drives

Buffalo has announced three Blu-ray drives that will be available by the end of this month for the Japanese market. All three drives - two internal and one external - will support 4X reading and writing of Blu-ray discs. The BR-416FBS will come in both black and white models, and feature SATA connections. The BR-416U2 external drive will feature a USB 2.0 connection. All models use the Panasonic SW-5583 Blu-ray drive.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has revealed the specs and extras features for their upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Sleuth', due to hit store shelves on March 11th. Video encoded using AVC at 1080p and will be accompanied by a 5.1 Dolby TrueHD audio track. Extras include two audio commentaries and the two featurettes "A Game of Cat & Mouse: Behind the Scenes of Sleuth" and "Inspector Doppler: Make-up Secrets Revealed".

More Shift Towards Blu-ray in Spain

As we reported earlier, Spanish distributors Filmax and Tripictures have gone Blu-ray exclusive. Now we can add one more to that list: Cameo. They are currently preparing a Blu-ray release of the extremely popular 'Planet Earth' series for the Spanish market. Rumors first began to swirl when Cameo failed to mention an HD DVD release, and those rumors have now been confirmed.

Sigmatek Announces SBR-1000 Blu-ray Player

Sigmatek has announced their first Blu-ray product: a standalone Blu-ray Disc player, the SBR-1000. The player will retail for under 250€ making it by far the cheapest player on the European market. The player will support 1080p24 and 1080p60 output via a HDMI v1.3 connection, as well as being able to decode Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby TrueHD.

Sharp Announces New Blu-ray Lasers

Sharp, the industry leader in Blu-ray laser diode manufacturing, has announced two new Blu-ray lasers. The new design allows for an industry leading 250mW output, allowing for 4-6X recording of Blu-ray media. The smaller 3.3mm version (GH04P25A4G) will be made available for laptops, while the larger 5.6mm version (GH04P25A2G) will be for PC drives.

BDA Sees Growth in Europe

The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) announced today that they have broken the two million discs sold milestone in Europe, only two months after selling their one millionth disc. According to research done by GfK International, a total of 2.4M Blu-ray discs have been sold across Europe since the format launched. This equates to 79% of the high definition market.
