Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Elizabethan Blu-ray Discs Coming Soon

In an early announcement to UK retailers it has been revealed that Universal Studios Home Entertainment will release 'Elizabeth' and 'Elizabeth: The Golden Age', starring Cate Blanchett as the Virgin Queen, on Blu-ray on March 15, 2010. No specifications, disc configuration or special features are available at this time.

First Managed-Copy Compatible Blu-ray Discs Shipping

Scenic Labs, LLC is shipping the first three in their series of BluScenes 1080p ambient discs on Blu-ray disc: 'The Classic Fireplace,' 'Coral Reef Aquarium,' and 'Journey through Space'. These titles have unwittingly become the first three Blu-ray releases to utilize BD's Managed Copy feature, which was originally set to go live today, although the live date has since been moved to March 31, 2010 by the AACS Licensing Authority.

Sony to Release World Cup Blu-ray in 3-D

Sony has signed an exclusive agreement with FIFA to broadcast the upcoming 2010 World Cup in 3-D and will bring the excitement to Blu-ray in 3-D as well. While the Blu-ray 3-D specs have yet to be approved by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), Sony pressing forward and will have their 3-D cameras filming up to 25 matches for the release.

The Simpsons Season 20 Announced for Blu-ray

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring 'The Simpsons: Season 20' to Blu-ray on January 12th. The two-disc set will feature all 21 episodes in 1.33:1 1080p AVC video accompanied by 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks. For a limited time, the Blu-ray will be available in a special collectible packaging.

First Season of Stargate Universe Coming to Blu-ray

According to our good friends at TV Shows on DVD, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring 'Stargate SG-U: Season One' to Blu-ray on February 9th. This two-disc set will feature all nine episodes of the first season presented in 1.78:1 1080p AVC video accompanied by a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

NetBlender Offers Blu-ray Certification Program

NetBlender has announced that they are now offering a comprehensive Blu-ray Authoring Certification program, a first for the industry. The program educates current DVD authors on the differences between the two formats as well as provides instruction using the company's DoStudio Blu-ray authoring software.

Time Warp Season 2 Coming Soon

Discovery Channel has announced that they will bring the popular slow motion series 'Time Warp: Season 2' to Blu-ray on December 29th. Released through Gaiam as part of a new exclusive distribution deal, this release will feature all episodes from the second season of the show. Technical specs and special features have not been announced at this time.

More Shaw Brothers Coming to Blu-ray

Toyko Shock has announced that they will bring the 1971 Shaw Brothers film 'The Deadly Duo' to Blu-ray on January 19th. This release will be only the second Shaw Brothers film to be released on Blu-ray in the United States. Technical specs and special features have not been announced at this time.

Rumor: Toy Story 1 and 2 on Blu-ray in Early 2010

Home entertainment site The Digital Bits is reporting in its "Rumor Mill" section that 'Toy Story' and 'Toy Story 2' will be released on Blu-ray ahead of the theatrical release of 'Toy Story 3', scheduled for June 18, 2010. Disney's BD-Live website features preview trailers for the BD release of these movies, which will include new special features as well as preview trailers for 'Toy Story 3'.

BD Sales, November 23-29: Angels & Demons Wins by a Nose (Update)

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's 'Angels & Demons' was the top-selling title on Blu-ray in the week ended November 23, according to Nielsen VideoScan First Alert. Paramount's 'Star Trek' got to number two, although both titles were remarkably close in sales volume - units sold were within 1 percent of each other. In Black Friday week, consumers "snapped up DVDs and Blu-ray Discs like candy", with estimated total packaged-media sales of 25 million discs. Update: sales figures added.

The Invention of Lying Blu-ray Gets Dated (Update)

Warner Home Video has announced that it will release 'The Invention of Lying' on January 19, 2010. Disc details and special features haven't been revealed, although the studio promises "over one hour of more laughs" and a digital copy of this comedy, starring, co-written and co-directed by Ricky Gervais. I-O Data Announces Slim External 6X Blu-ray Drive

I-O Data has announced that they will release their BRP-US6 Slim External 6X Blu-ray Burner in Japan this month. The USB connected drive, which is based on a Sony Blu-ray computer drive, can read BD-ROM and write to single layer BD-R discs at speeds up to 6X (for dual layer BD-R and all BD-RE media, the top write speed will be 2X).

Big Screen Goes Blu-ray

Big Screen Entertainment Group has announced that they will soon begin releasing Blu-ray titles in the US through an exclusive distribution partnership with Alternative Distribution Alliance (ADA). The first title to be released from the newly formed label will be the award-winning horror film 'Babysitter Wanted' in April.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced the technical specs for the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Halloween II', which is scheduled to be released on January 12th. Directed by Rob Zombie, this film will be presented in 1.85:1 1080p AVC accompanied by a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

Universal Brings back Flipper Combos, now on Blu-ray

In an industry first, Universal Studios Home Entertainment announced today the introduction of "groundbreaking" dual-format discs containing both Blu-ray and DVD versions of some of the studio's most iconic films. The new "flipper" discs will launch on January 19, 2010 with the spy thrillers 'The Bourne Identity', 'The Bourne Supremacy' and 'The Bourne Ultimatum', premiering in the US as individually packaged Blu-ray discs.

Czech Company to Open First Blu-ray Replication Plant in Central Europe

55-year-old Czech disc and packaging manufacturer GZ Digital Media plans to launch the first production plant for Blu-ray Discs in Central Europe. GZ Digital intends to invest more than $14.5 million in new technology for the plant, which will be constructed near its base in Lodenice, Czech Republic. The facility is expected to go into full operation by January 2012.

Fans of 'The Lord of the Rings' can't get a break. After the unceremonious postponement of the release of the theatrical versions of the 'Rings' movies on Blu-ray, now comes the news that the theatrical release of the first instalment of 'The Hobbit' (often mentioned as the probable release date for the extended versions on BD) could also be delayed one full year, to late 2012.

According to sources cited by specialized site TV Shows on DVD, Image Entertainment has begun preparing the classic television series 'The Twilight Zone' for release on Blu-ray during 2010, possibly using the high-definition masters struck when the studio released the Definitive Edition DVD sets in 2004-2005.

Clash of the Titans, Neverending Story Announced on Blu-ray

Warner Home Video has announced two fantasy titles from the 1980s for release on Blu-ray on March 2, 2010: 'Clash of the Titans' and 'The Neverending Story'. 'Clash of the Titans' will be presented in a Digibook case, whereas 'The Neverending Story' will come in a regular BD case. There is no information regarding audio and video specifications yet.

MGM Home Entertainment, in conjunction with 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, has announced that it will release 'Fame' on Blu-ray on January 12, 2010. This "reinvention" of the Alan Parker movie (which, in turn, is announced on Blu-ray for January 26) will feature the theatrical and "extended dance" versions of the film, as well as deleted scenes and a digital copy of the movie.

Image Entertainment has announced that it will release 'Dare' on Blu-ray on February 9, 2010. This independent drama, based on an earlier short film by director Adam Salky (which is also included in this BD edition), premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and had a limited theatrical release on November 13.
