Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Black Friday: Part Deux Starts This Saturday at Walmart

Walmart has announced that, beginning this Saturday, they will bring back some of the most popular Black Friday sale items, including the $78 Magnavox Blu-ray Disc player. Additionally, they will offer new Blu-ray releases, including 'Star Trek', 'Public Enemies', 'GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra', 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen' and 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine', for under $20.

Black Friday: 14% of WHV Sales Were Blu-ray, Catalog Sales Up 4x

At a Future of Film Summit panel discussion held December 8 and sponsored by Variety, studios reported substantial Blu-ray sales and growth. For Warner Home Video, 14% of its total Black Friday software sales this year came from Blu-ray, up from 9% at the same date in 2008. Warner's Blu-ray catalog sales also were four times higher than during last year's Black Friday.

Mesrine Double Feature Announced on Blu-ray

Momentum Pictures has announced the Blu-ray release of 'Mesrine Parts 1 & 2', which will hit UK store shelves on January 25, 2010. 'Mesrine' is a four-hour epic in two parts ('Mesrine: Killer Instinct' and 'Mesrine: Public Enemy No. 1) that charts the rise and fall of French gangster Jacques Mesrine, played by Vincent Cassel, in an award-winning performance.

CES 2010: AMD to Show 3-D Blu-ray Playback

AMD has revealed that will be demonstrating 3-D Blu-ray playback at their booth as CES 2010. While the spec is still in the approval stages within the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), AMD and Cyberlink will be partnering to give Blu-ray fans an early look at what they can expect when the technology goes live later next year.

This Is It Coming to Blu-ray in the UK

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring Michael Jackson's 'This Is It' to Blu-ray in the UK on February 22nd. Technical specs have still yet to be announced, but you can expect the typical Sony 1080p AVC video and DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack presentation.

MGM Details Fame Blu-ray

MGM Home Entertainment in conjunction with 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment have announced the technical specs and special features for the upcoming Blu-ray release 'Fame', which is scheduled to be released on January 12th. For this 2009 remake of the Alan Parker classic 'Fame' (also set to be released for Blu-ray on January 26th), video will be presented in 2.40:1 1080p AVC accompanied by a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced the technical specs and special features for the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Whip It', which is scheduled to be released on January 26th. This roller derby comedy starring Ellen Page (Juno) and directed by Drew Barrymore (50 First Dates) will be presented in 2.40:1 1080p AVC accompanied by a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

When the Harry Potter film series concludes in 2011, star Daniel Radcliffe will have aged 10 years since first appearing as the young sorcerer and, if the films' success continues, generated over $9B in world-wide box office receipts. Today, the sixth film in the series - 'Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince' - is being released on Blu-ray, giving fans a chance to not only watch the film in high definition, but also join Radcliffe and director David Yates for an industry-first worldwide BD-Live screening of the film.

Saw VI Blu-ray Packaged with First Saw Movie

Lionsgate Home Entertainment is set to release 'Saw VI' on an unrated director's cut Blu-ray on January 26, 2010. The Blu-ray release will also include the original 'Saw' film, as a way to introduce new viewers to the series and foster sales of the other instalments. At this moment it isn't known whether the first 'Saw' edition (released in June 2006, with MPEG-2 video and lossy audio on a BD25) will be reused or if a new audio/video encode will be struck for this bundle.

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has launched the "Upgrade2Blu" program, which offers $8 off the Blu-ray editions of the Disney movies you already own on DVD. Just access the Upgrade2Blu page, select the eligible titles that you own, print out a rebate form and affix proof-of-purchase tabs from the DVDs, mail in the form with the tabs, and you will receive the savings coupon via email.

Fox Offers Blu-ray Discount Coupons

Starting December 6, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment is offering a series of Blu-ray discount coupons inside major local newspapers and online on Smartsource. Coupons are good at most major retailers and are valid through January 6, 2010. Offers include $10 off several Blu-ray box sets, and $3 off eligible individual titles.

All members of the reviewing team of Blu-ray.com have been asked to compile a list of their personal top ten Blu-ray titles of 2009, regardless of whether they had reviewed them themselves or not. Naturally, personal favorites varied widely, but one new release (Pixar/Disney's 'Up') and three catalog titles (Fox's 'Fight Club', Criterion's 'Last Year in Marienbad' and Warner's 'North by Northwest') emerged as the year's winners.

This horror comedy about a group of survivors of a plague that has turned mankind into flesh-devouring zombies was very well received by critics and moviegoers, grossing over $75 million domestically.

TV Shows on Blu-ray Still Facing Challenges

Television series are among the product categories where consumers are being slowest embracing Blu-ray, mainly because of the price differential between the hidef and standard-def versions of season sets. As a consequence, not all series are receiving a BD version, and retailers are more cautious stocking TV titles on BD than movies.

Boogie Nights Blu-ray as Best Buy Exclusive

A Blu-ray edition of Paul Thomas Anderson's movie 'Boogie Nights' has suddenly appeared on the Best Buy website, with a release date of December 15. No information on this exclusivity deal, or on the release details, has been made public either by the retailer or the studios. It will probably be a timed retailer exclusive, like previous Warner titles such as 'Gremlins' or 'The Green Mile'.

African Queen Blu-ray in February

An early announcement to retailers indicates that 'The African Queen', the classic movie starring Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn and directed by John Huston, will be released on Blu-ray on February 23, 2010. No release details are available, but judging from the list price, this might be part of Paramount's "Sapphire Series."

Peter Jackson Talks Lord of the Rings Blu-ray

During an interview for the promotion of his upcoming movie 'The Lovely Bones', Peter Jackson was asked about the status of the Blu-ray release of 'The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy'. Jackson replied: "I've seen the Blu-ray as they sent it to me to approve and I looked at the film and it looks fantastic on Blu-ray but I don't know the date."

BBC, in conjunction with Warner Home Video, has revealed the full release details for 'Doctor Who: The Complete Specials', as well as for individual releases 'The Waters of Mars' and 'The End of Time, Part One and Two'. Additionally, specialised site TV Shows on DVD has received confirmation that The Next Doctor, one of the specials included in the collection, will be "upconverted for the BD, as it was shot in standard definition."

Blu-ray Black Friday Week Sales Triple, Cancel DVD's Fall

According to data gathered by the research department of Home Media Magazine, revenue from Blu-ray software sales during the week ended November 24 was a record $69.06 million, up 224.04% from the same week in 2008. That growth more than offset the fall in DVD revenue, which was down 7.89% year-on-year. Packaged media as a whole was up 1.02%.

Costco to Focus on Blu-ray for the Holidays

Costco Wholesale Corp. is putting the spotlight on Blu-ray Disc players and movies for the holiday shopping season, expanding in-store availability of BDs by 50% and educating about the format. The December issue of Costco Connection, distributed monthly to the company's 53 million cardholders, devoted significant space to Blu-ray. “Blu-ray Disc movies are now the focus of our department,” said Costco warehouse DVD/Blu-ray buyer Claudia Augello in the magazine.
