Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Michael Jackson's This Is It Blu-ray Announced

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that it will release 'Michael Jackson's This Is It', the movie documenting the late performer's rehearsals for a series of London concerts cancelled after Jackson's sudden passing, on Blu-ray on January 26, 2010. It will be presented in 1080p AVC video with a DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

Two More Flipside Titles from BFI

The British Film Institute (BFI) has announced two Blu-ray titles from its Flipside line, devoted to previously 'lost' British films. On January 25, 2010, 'That Kind of Girl' (Gerry O'Hara, 1963) and 'Permissive' (Lindsay Shonteff, 1970) will come out in collectable numbered packaging, accompanied by extensive illustrated booklets with enlightening contributions from special guest writers.

Brand Name Blu-ray Player with BD-Live breaks $80

In another pricing milestone passed, Fry's and Amazon offered a name-brand Blu-ray player with BD-Live support for under $80 on Black Friday. Fry's Home Electronics is selling an LG BD370 (with Netflix streaming) for $77, while Amazon offered a Toshiba BDX2000, that soon sold out. In a twist of fate, it came from the major CE maker that for two years fought Blu-ray tooth and nail.

Rumor: The Abyss and More from Fox on Blu-ray in 2010

According to French site Les Numériques, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment is preparing a hefty list of titles for Blu-ray release in 2010. Apart from the obvious mention of the Alien quadrilogy, other interesting titles are in the slate, such as 'The Abyss' or 'The Sound of Music'.

Fox Exec Discusses Star Wars Blu-ray and Title Selection

At a Panasonic Blu-ray lunch held November 25 in Australia, 20th Century Fox Managing Director Chris Dunn was asked when 'Star Wars' can be expected to come out on Blu-ray. Dunn replied that one would need to ask George Lucas, but he remarked that the DVD release of the original 'Star Wars' trilogy happened in 2004, very late in the format's lifecycle, when it was pretty much ubiquitous.

BD Sales: November 16-22 – Star Trek Sets New Record

In the week ended November 22, 'Star Trek' was the top-selling title on Blu-ray, according to Nielsen VideoScan First Alert, which also puts the Blu-ray market share for this title at 38%, breaking the new-release record held by 'Watchmen'. The research department of Home Media Magazine estimates that total BD sales for this title in North America were 1.1 million units (including sales to the rental market).

Whiteout Blu-ray in January

Warner Home Video will release 'Whiteout' on Blu-ray on January 19, 2010. This crime thriller set in Antarctica, based on a 1998 comic book miniseries, starring Kate Beckinsale and directed by Dominic Sena, opened theatrically in September but only made $10 million dollars at the box office.

Tudors Season 3 Blu-ray Announced

The UK branch of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced the Blu-ray release of 'The Tudors: The Complete Third Season' for December 7. This season sees Jonathan Rhys Myers returning to the role of Henry VIII, alongside Henry Cavill, Annabelle Wallis and Joss Stone in her debut acting role as Anne of Cleves. No AV specifications or region coding information has been disclosed.

Blu-ray Year-to-Date Revenues 137% Up

According to data collected by the research department of Home Media Magazine, revenue from Blu-ray Disc in 2009 through November 15 was $865.89 million, up 137.56% from the same period in 2008. In turn, DVD earned $7,957.93 million, down 7.54%; thanks to Blu-ray, packaged media revenues have dropped only 1.6% year-on-year. BD had an average packaged-media market share of 10%.

Ichi the Killer Blu-ray Delayed Again

In a last-minute date change, Tokyo Shock has once again postponed the Blu-ray release of 'Ichi the Killer'. This title was initially scheduled for March 2009, but was subsequently pushed back to August, then October, then November and now it is supposed to come out on February 23, 2010. No reason has been given for the new delay.

LG Blu-ray Player for $99.99, Fast and Furious $9.99

Amazon Gold Box deal of the day is a special offer on an LG BD270 Blu-ray player, which only today can be bought for $99.99. This player supports 1080p video, advanced audio codecs and BonusView, but not BD-Live. Lionsgate Announces StudioCanal Collection

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has announced that they will begin releasing classic titles on Blu-ray as part of a "StudioCanal Collection". The first three titles to be released in this collection, 'Ran', 'The Ladykillers', and 'Contempt', are scheduled to hit store shelves on February 16th. Each title will feature a 1080p AVC video transfer, multiple DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks, and a 20-page collectible book

Today on Blu-ray - November 24th

By all indications, 'The Da Vinci Code' was a box office smash. While top critics almost universally panned the film, the controversy surrounding the film's fictitious subject matter (and its subsequent validation through opposition) helped generate over $750M in worldwide box office revenue. After such amazing commercial success, a sequel was inevitable, and both director Ron Howard and actor Tom Hanks returned for 'Angels & Demons', which is being released on Blu-ray today.

Cabin Fever Blu-ray for February (Update)

An early announcement to retailers indicates that Lionsgate Home Entertainment will release 'Cabin Fever', the first movie directed by Eli Roth ('Hostel' and 'Hostel Part II'), on Blu-ray on February 16, 2010 (possibly to tie in with the theatrical release of 'Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever'). Update: Lionsgate has now officially announced the title and detailed its specifications and contents.

Cheaper by the Dozen 2 Blu-ray Announced

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has officially announced and detailed the Blu-ray release of the Steve Martin comedy 'Cheaper by the Dozen 2' for January 5, 2010, as reported by blu-ray.com in October. However, at the time of writing the studio has not mentioned a BD release of the first movie, 'Cheaper by the Dozen'.

Paranormal Activity Blu-ray Announced

Paramount Home Entertainment has officially announced the sleeper hit 'Paranormal Activity' on Blu-ray for December 29. The BD will include the original theatrical version of the film, plus an unrated version with a "shocking alternate ending" not seen in theaters. The Blu-ray also includes a digital copy of the theatrical version.

Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths BD Announced

Warner Home Video has set a February 23 Blu-ray release date for 'Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths', a direct-to-video animated movie that takes place in a parallel Earth ruled by the Crime Syndicate, where the Justice League must fight their evil doppelgangers. As usual with TV and DTV content from this studio, audio is listed as Dolby Digital only.

Vampyres Restored for Blu-ray Release

Blue Underground has announced that they will bring the cult horror film 'Vampyres' to Blu-ray on March 30th. Often edited by censors around the world, the film, which is also known as 'Daughters of Dracula', will be presented uncensored utilizing a new 1.85:1 1080p video transfer accompanied by an upgraded 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas BD Coming Up

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced the Blu-ray release of 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas' for February 2, 2010. This Terry Gilliam movie, based on the book by Hunter S. Thompson and starring Johnny Depp and Benicio del Toro, will be presented in 1080p video with a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

Panasonic Presents Archival Blu-ray for Medical Use

Last week, at the MEDICA medical trade show in Düsseldorf, Germany, Panasonic presented the Advanced Disc for Archive (ADA) optical disc, a Blu-ray with a cassette-type shell case aimed at archiving data of pictures in the medical field. Archiving software provider QStar Technologies has certified Panasonic's Blu-ray archiving box for its HSM archival storage software platform.

BD Snags over Half of Watchmen Ultimate Cut Sales

According to data from Nielsen VideoScan First Alert for the week ended November 15, 54.31% of all sales of 'Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut' came from the Blu-ray edition. This is a new first-week record for a title simultaneously released on Blu-ray and DVD. 'Watchmen' had already set a record 36% BD market share when the director's cut was released.

Amazon has published a deal calendar revealing its Blu-ray "lightning deals" that will come up during this week. It's unusual that the web retail giant details such special offers in advance, even when there is a themed week for deals of the day and lightning deals. This tactic is apparently aimed at getting customers to shop from home rather than brave the crowds at the bricks- and-mortar stores.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced two catalog titles for release on Blu-ray on February 2, 2010: 'Maid in Manhattan' and 'Mona Lisa Smile', both of which had been already announced on BD in 2008 but were subsequently cancelled, although they were released in Europe. Both will feature AVC 1080p video with Dolby TrueHD soundtracks.

Magnolia Home Entertainment has officially announced 'Ong Bak 2: The Beginning' for Blu-ray release on February 2, 2010. 'Ong Bak 2' is a prequel to 'Ong Bak: The Thai Warrior' and is an "epic tale of revenge set hundreds of years in the past." The BD will include both the original Thai soundtrack and an English dub audio track.

New Site Feature: Lowest Price

Blu-ray.com has added a new feature that will help users to get the most bang for their buck when shopping for BDs: the Lowest-price warning. Any title that hits its lowest historic price will be displayed on the New Deals page with the message "Lowest price". Until now, you needed to open the price history graph to check a title's current price against past price. Now you don't need to - the site informs you whether this is the cheapest the title has been.

PS3's Blu-ray Functionality Promoted in New Ad

A new PlayStation 3 puts BD playback front and center, within the "Dear PlayStation" theme of its new campaign. It features an "unhappy grandchild", complaining that his grandma "won't stop watching Blu-ray movies" on his PS3. A VP for "Blu-ray Superiority" (sic) replies, "for 299 bucks you don't just get a sweet gaming machine, you get the best Blu-ray player around built-in for free."
