Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Ip Man 2 Announced on Blu-ray

Well Go USA has announced Ip Man 2 for Blu-ray release on April 19, in a single-disc standard edition and a 2-disc special edition. In this martial arts movie, Hong Kong film star Donnie Yen reprises his role as Ip Man in this semi-autobiographical sequel following the adventures of the grandmaster of Wing Chun.

Panasonic: Studios Offer Us the Exclusive 3D Blu-ray Deals

Speaking to UK home cinema magazine Home Cinema Choice, Masayuki Kozuka, head of R&D for Panasonic's Media and Content Alliance, revealed that Panasonic didn't go to studios asking for titles to bundle exclusively with their 3D TVs, but rather the other way round. "Studios come to us and ask if we want to take exclusive deals," said Kozuka, who added that the Avatar 3D Blu-ray was a "one-off" and that Panasonic isn't looking for more exclusive bundles.

Cars Spin-off Planes on Blu-ray in 2013

Walt Disney Studios has announced Planes, a full-length CG animated comedy action adventure movie set high above the world of Cars. This direct-to-video movie (produced by DisneyToon Studios, not Pixar) centers around Dusty, a small town dreamer who longs to enter the most epic around-the-world air race despite his fear of heights. It will arrive on Blu-ray in spring 2013.

Casablanca, Lethal Weapon Blu-ray to Be Pulled from Shelves

Warner Home Video has announced a moratorium initiative starting March 28 for Casablanca and all four films in the Lethal Weapon series (of which only Lethal Weapon and Lethal Weapon 2 have been released on Blu-ray in the US). They will be re-released in 2012 in special anniversary editions, which will include "stunning remasterings, spectacular Blu-ray debuts, new special features, Ultimate Collectors Editions and more."

Kubrick Limited Collection Blu-ray Details Emerge

The Digital Bits has posted additional information regarding the upcoming Stanley Kubrick Limited Edition Collection, slated for Blu-ray release on May 31. The video transfers and AV specs for the titles already available (including A Clockwork Orange) will be exactly the same as for the existing BD releases. As for the new titles, they will both come with DTS-HD Master Audio tracks (mono for Lolita and 5.1 for Barry Lyndon).

Echo Bridge Gets Slice of Miramax Blu-ray Catalog Pie

Echo Bridge Entertainment – the studio that brought you Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus – and Miramax have announced that they have entered into a domestic distribution deal, under which Echo Bridge will distribute 251 titles from the Miramax film library via DVD and Blu-ray to retailers around the country "utilizing Echo Bridge's unique merchandising and distribution techniques."

Rush Moving Pictures Audio Blu-ray in April

The Rush multi-platinum classic album Moving Pictures is slated for Blu-ray release on April 5 on an audio BD/DVD set. It has been remixed into 5.1 audio by Canadian producer/engineer Richard Chycki, who had sat behind the mixing desk for Rush's Snakes & Arrows. Chycki has stated that his goal was "to pay serious homage to the production of the era."

Borders Files for Chapter 11, Will Close 200 Stores

Yesterday, Borders Group Inc. filed for Chapter 11 protection and announced that it will close around 200 stores out of the 659 it currently has nationwide by the end of April. At the moment there is no information on liquidation sales. The company has received $505 million in financing for restructuring.

Four Imax 3D Blu-ray Titles from Image in March

Image has announced four Imax 3D titles for Blu-ray release in March, three of them part of its agreement with Big Picture Digital Productions. On March 1, the studio will release Dinosaurs: Giants of Patagonia and The Ultimate Wave: Tahiti. Then, on March 29, two other titles will hit store shelves: Mummies: Secret of the Pharaohs and Ultimate G's: Zac s Flying Dream (starring an 11-year-old Michael Cera). List price is $24.98 for each. All of them are 2D compatible.

Blu-ray Sales, Feb. 7-13: Paranormal Activity 2 Is #1

Paranormal Activity 2 was the top-selling title on Blu-ray during the week ended February 13, according to Nielsen VideoScan. Tyler Perry's For Colored Girls, which was #1 in packaged media overall, only managed fourth place in hidef. The title with the biggest BD percentage was Ong Bak 3: The Final Battle, with 41% of its total disc sales coming from the BD version.

Lady and the Tramp, Fox and the Hound Blu-ray Coming Up

The upcoming Diamond Blu-ray edition of Bambi includes an insert offering new information regarding upcoming titles from Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment. After The Lion King in fall 2011, the next Diamond title will be Lady and the Tramp in spring 2012. The studio will also release The Fox and the Hound and The Fox and the Hound II as a non-Diamond double-feature BD in September 2011.

Panasonic Launches Blu-ray Recorders with 3D in the UK

Panasonic announced the introduction of two new 3D compatible DIGA Blu-ray Disc recorders, models DMR-BWT800 and BWT700, available only in the UK. Both feature twin HD terrestrial tuners, which enable customers to record digital broadcasts in full-HD quality. They can convert 2D Blu-ray or 2D DVD into 3D images, as well as convert a normal 2D digital broadcast TV program into 3D in combination with a 3D TV and 3D glasses. Hard drive capacity is 500GB for the BWT800 and 250GB for the BWT700.

Little Fockers Blu-ray Announced

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced Little Fockers for Blu-ray release on April 5, in a BD/DVD/Digital Copy combo pack (BD and DVD in separate discs). This third entry of the Fockers series (after Meet the Parents and Meet the Fockers) earned $147 million at the box office. The Blu-ray will provide access to a free movie via streaming video.

The Cove, Rules of Attraction, Still Waiting Blu-ray Go Wide

The Cincinnati Kid, Point Break Blu-ray Announced

Warner Home Video has announced two catalog titles for Blu-ray release on June 14: The Cincinnati Kid (Norman Jewison, 1965) and Point Break (Kathryn Bigelow, 1991). The latter had previously been released on Blu-ray by 20th Century Fox in 2008. That BD is now out of print.

Optimum Home Entertainment has announced And Soon the Darkness for Blu-ray release in the UK on March 7. This thriller, starring Amber Heard and Odette Yustman as two American girls who embark on an ill-fated bike tour through a remote part of Argentina's countryside, is a remake of a 1970 British movie of the same title, directed by Robert Fuest.

Blu-ray Puts Image in the Black

In its results for the quarter ended December 31, Image Entertainment reported that sales of Blu-ray titles increased 85% to $5.7 million, compared to $3.1 million last year. Partly thanks to that, the studio reported net income of nearly $1.4 million compared to a loss of $2 million during the previous-year period.

It is not uncommon for directors to have favorite actors, but it is a bit unique for a director to use the same lead actor three films in a row. Of course, that is exactly what director Tony Scott has pulled off with his favorite actor Denzel Washington for their most recent collaboration Unstoppable, which is out today on Blu-ray. For those who are fans of the duo, you'll be upset to hear that Scott's next film, Emma's War, doesn't appear to have a role with Denzel in mind.

Third Narnia Movie Announced on Blu-ray in the UK

The UK branch of 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader for Blu-ray release on April 18, in a "Triple Play" BD/DVD/Digital Copy combo pack. Although it was shown theatrically in (converted) 3D, no 3D Blu-ray has been announced in the UK either.

Warner Home Video has officially announced A Clockwork Orange: 40th Anniversary Edition for Blu-ray release on May 31, in a two-disc Digibook edition with new additional content. On the same date, the studio will also release the nine-movie, ten-disc Stanley Kubrick Limited Edition Collection, including Spartacus, Lolita (new to Blu-ray), Dr. Strangelove or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon (new to Blu-ray), The Shining, Full Metal Jacket and Eyes Wide Shut.

Warner Home Video has announced The Man Who Would Be King for Blu-ray release on June 7. This classic adventure movie, starring Sean Connery and Michael Caine and directed by John Huston, will be presented in a Digibook edition including a 32-page book "packed with film information and photos."

The Criterion Collection has announced a record seven titles for Blu-ray release in May. On May 3, it will release Fat Girl (À ma soeur; Catherine Breillat, 2001) and Smiles of a Summer Night (Sommarnattens leende; Ingmar Bergman, 1955). A week later, it will release Something Wild (Jonathan Demme, 1986). On May 17, the studio will put out Diabolique (Les diaboliques; Henri-Georges Clouzot, 1954) and Pale Flower (Kawaita Hana; Masahiro Shinoda, 1964). And last but not least, May 24 will see BD releases for The Great Dictator (Charles Chaplin, 1940) and Solaris (Andrei Tarkovsky, 1972).

Twentieth Century Fox has announced Arthur and the Invisibles 2 & 3: The New Minimoy Adventures for Blu-ray release on March 22. In these two part-live action, part-animated films, directed by Luc Besson, Freddie Highmore returns to the role he played in the 2006 Arthur and the Invisibles (Arthur et les Minimoys).

Warner Home Video has announced three Blu-ray double feature packs for release on June 7, in time for Father's Day: American History X / A History of Violence, Collateral Damage / Eraser and Wyatt Earp / The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Disc details are the same as on the respective single-movie editions.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced Taxi Driver for Blu-ray release on April 5, in a 35th Anniversary edition. This gritty urban drama, written by Paul Schrader, directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Robert De Niro as a man driven to violence by loneliness and desperation, won the 1976 Palme d'Or at Cannes and was nominated to four Academy Awards. In a welcome initiative, SPHE has licensed the use of the original Scorsese/Schrader audio commentary previously only available on the Laserdisc.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced Sniper: Reloaded for Blu-ray release on April 26. This direct-to-video action movie is a sequel to the Sniper movies, where Marine Sgt. Brandon Beckett, son of renowned sniper Thomas Beckett, must turn to his former protégé (Billy Zane) to track down and kill a mysterious sniper before he kills his next target.

This family movie, based on the classic Hanna-Barbera animated series, features the voices of Dan Aykroyd and Justin Timberlake as Yogi and Boo Boo.
