Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has officially announced TRON: Legacy and the original 1982 movie Tron for Blu-ray release on April 5. Legacy will be presented in several configurations: a 2-Disc BD/DVD Combo Pack; a 4-Disc BD 3D/BD 2D/DVD/Digital Copy Combo Pack; a 5-Disc 2-Movie Blu-ray Combo Pack (Blu-ray 3D + Blu-ray 2D + DVD + Digital Copy of TRON: Legacy + Blu-ray of TRON: The Original Classic Special Edition) and a Limited Edition Ultimate TRON Experience in collectible Identity Disc packaging.

Tarkovsky's Solaris Blu-ray Coming Up

In its latest newsletter, The Criterion Collection has announced that its May Blu-ray lineup will include an eagerly awaited movie: Andrei Tarkovsky's Solaris. Its video transfer has been updated to give the black-and-white scenes in the film the blue tint which was absent from Criterion's first DVD release. Other release details will be announced later.

Miramax Blu-ray to Be Distributed by Lionsgate in the US, Studiocanal in Europe

Lionsgate, Studiocanal and Miramax announced today that they have entered into a worldwide home entertainment distribution deal. Under the long-term deal, Lionsgate and Studiocanal will distribute more than 550 titles from the Miramax film library on Blu-ray. The studio will soon release the Scream trilogy, and Pulp Fiction will finally get its Blu-ray release in June.

Rabbit Hole Blu-ray Announced

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has announced Rabbit Hole for Blu-ray release on April 19. This independent drama, based on a Pulitzer price winning stage play by David Lindsay-Abaire, stars Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart as a couple returning to their everyday existence in the wake of the death of their 4-year-old son. It received a limited theatrical release in December 2010.

Casino Jack Blu-ray Announced

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced Casino Jack for Blu-ray release on April 5. The critically acclaimed film, based on a true story, stars Kevin Spacey as Jack Abramoff, one of Washington DC's most lucrative lobbyists, who used his power and influence to promote the Indian gambling industry, earning him the nickname "Casino Jack."

AC/DC Let There Be Rock Blu-ray Announced

Warner Home Video has announced AC/DC: Let There Be Rock for Blu-ray release on June 7, in a limited-edition BD/DVD combo pack in a 30th Anniversary Collector's Tin. This legendary concert film covers a 1979 Paris concert during the Australian heavy metal band's "Highway To Hell" tour. Interview segments and humorous backstage footage show another side to the musicians, especially AC/DC's flamboyant lead singer Bon Scott, who died two months after this filmed concert.

Germany: Blu-ray Sales Double in 2010, Drive Home Video Growth

The German Federal Association for Audiovisual Media (BVV) has released figures for the home video market for 2010. During the year, Blu-ray sold 12.0 million units, a growth of 94% over sales in 2009. Revenues from Blu-ray sales were 193 million euros (62% up). Thanks to that, home video sales grew both in units and in revenue over the figures from the previous year. Around one of every seven home video euros comes now from Blu-ray.

More MGM Catalog Titles Heading to Blu-ray

According to a report from Bill Hunt of TheDigitalBits.com, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment in conjunction with MGM Home Entertainment will release All Dogs Go to Heaven, All Dogs Go to Heaven 2, Picture This, The Secret of the NIMH, Material Girls, Teen Wolf and Legally Blonde 2: Red, White and Blonde for Blu-ray on March 29th. Additionally, they will release the Norman Jewison musical Fiddler on the Roof: 40th Anniversary Edition for Blu-ray a week later on April 5th.

Paramount Explains Why No 3D Blu-ray for Jackass 3

As previously reported, Jackass 3 will come out on March 8 without a 3D Blu-ray version, only an antiquated anaglyph 3D version (with two-colored glasses), and in standard definition, on the accompanying DVD. The Digital Bits contacted Paramount Home Entertainment to ask why. The official response received was that the decision was made "in an effort to bring the 3D home viewing experience of Jackass 3 to as wide an audience as possible."

Memento to Screen in Theaters Ahead of 10th Anniversary Blu-ray

Christopher Nolan's breakout film, the nonlinear psychological thriller Memento, will celebrate its tenth anniversary with one-night only screenings on February 17, in 11 select digital cinemas in the US and Canada, just days ahead of the release of the 10th Anniversary Blu-ray. These screenings will feature never-before-seen Q&A footage featuring Nolan speaking with acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro. The film will be screened from an all-new, director-approved, high-definition digital print.

BFI Video has announced A Day In The Life - Four Portraits Of Post-war Britain for Blu-ray release on March 28, in a BD/DVD dual-format edition. This award-winning documentary contains four of the most cherished films by John Krish: The Elephant Will Never Forget (1953), a poetic farewell to London's trams; They Took Us to the Sea (1961), a poignant record of a seaside outing for disadvantaged children; Our School (1962), charting the beliefs of educators, and the aspirations of the decade's young school-leavers; and I Think They Call Him John (1964), a deeply moving account of the life of an elderly widower.

Criterion “Three Reasons” Blu-ray Trailer: Blow Out

The Criterion Collection has created a new "Three Reasons" trailer, this time for Blow Out, which is slated for Blu-ray release on April 26. This trailer expresses three reasons why, in Criterion's opinion, Brian De Palma's 1981 thriller is a must-see.

Basket Case Blu-ray Planned for October

Via his Facebook page, director Frank Henenlotter has revealed that he hopes that his directorial debut, the cult horror movie Basket Case, will have a Blu-ray release by October, released by Image Entertainment. The film will be remastered from the original 16mm negative, which has never been used for any previous releases. Other details are still pending.

Gundam Unicorn Vol. 3 Blu-ray Announced

Bandai Visual has announced Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn Vol. 3 for Blu-ray release on April 7. As previous volumes, it will feature both Japanese and English audio in Dolby TrueHD, as well as English subtitles. It will be available at the Bandai Entertainment Store and Amazon Marketplace and other select online retailers.

Bicycle Thieves, Les Diaboliques Announced on Blu-ray

In March, Arrow Films will launch its new Arrow Academy label, celebrating the best in world cinema. The first title in the range will be the acclaimed Bicycle Thieves (Ladri di biciclette, also known as The Bicycle Thief; Vittorio De Sica, 1948), slated for Blu-ray release on March 28. The classic French thriller Les Diaboliques (Henri-Georges Clouzot, 1955) will follow on April 18.

Blu-ray Sales, Jan. 31 - Feb. 6: Red Again Number One

In its second week in stores, Red was again the top-selling title on Blu-ray, according to data from Nielsen VideoScan for the week ended February 6. The animated classic Alice in Wonderland was a close second. Another Disney title, Beverly Hills Chihuahua 2, which was number one in overall disc sales (DVD and BD), only managed third place in Blu-ray.

Sony in Talks to Distribute MGM Films on Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is reportedly on the verge of signing a new deal with MGM to distribute the studio's films on Blu-ray, as well as all other digital mediums. The studio, which has just recently emerged from bankruptcy, currently has a distribution deal with Fox Home Entertainment which is set to expire in September. If the deal is approved, Sony will take over digital distribution of all future MGM films.

Last Tango in Paris, Moonstruck, Rain Man Blu-ray Detailed

MGM Home Entertainment has revealed the release details for a trio of catalog releases that it will release on February 15: Last Tango in Paris (Bernardo Bertolucci, 1972), Moonstruck (Norman Jewison, 1987) and Rain Man (Barry Levinson, 1988). The latter two will be part of the studio's Award Series, and Last Tango will be presented in original, uncut, NC-17 rated version.

Clockwork Orange 40th Anniversary Blu-ray Coming Up (Update)

The French branch of Warner Home Video has announced that, on May 18, it will re-release Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange in a 40-Anniversary, 2-Disk Digibook Blu-ray edition. Just a few days earlier, the film be projected digitally at the Cannes Film Festival. There is no information about a US release at the moment. Update: further information added.

Red UK Blu-ray Announced

Entertainment One has announced Red for Blu-ray release in the UK on February 14. This action comedy, based on a comic-book series about a retired CIA agent, stars Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich and Helen Mirren. It just hit number one on the US Blu-ray sales charts.

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced The Fighter for Blu-ray release on March 15, in a BD/DVD/Digital Copy combo pack. This movie is based on the true story of two brothers (played by Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg) who, against all the odds, come together to train for a historic title bout. It's nominated for seven Academy Awards (Christian Bale - Actor in a Supporting Role, Amy Adams - Actress in a Supporting Role, Melissa Leo - Actress in a Supporting Role, Directing, Film Editing, Best Picture and Original Screenplay).

The Way Back Blu-ray Announced

Image Entertainment has announced The Way Back for Blu-ray release on April 19. This movie, directed by Peter Weir and starring Ed Harris, Saoirse Ronan and Colin Farrell, is set in Russia in the 1940s and centers around seven Gulag prisoners who try to escape and have to face a treacherous 4,500-mile trek to freedom across the world's most merciless landscapes.

Katherine Heigl plays Holly, an uptight entrepreneur. Josh Duhamel plays Messer, a dysfunctional sports director. Together, they star in Life as We Know It, which sees this odd couple forced together after tragedy takes the lives of two mutual friends, and Holly and Messer are identified as their young daughter's god-parents. Out today on Blu-ray, this romantic comedy will likely require more suspension of disbelief than the usual affair, but might be worth a look for any fans of the genre.

Analog Sunset Hits 2011 Blu-ray Players

Some of the new Blu-ray players announced at CES are soon launching, and they include all sorts of new features (e.g., 3D, Skype, streaming) but have lost one not insignificant feature – component video outputs. This is dictated by the "Analog Sunset" clause in the specification of the AACS, the content protection standard used by the Blu-ray format, which forbids new players from outputting HD over component. By 2013, analog video output will disappear outright from all BD players.

A.I. Blu-ray Date Changed Again

The Blu-ray release of Steven Spielberg's A.I. Artificial Intelligence, initially slated for February 15 but later delayed to April 12, will finally hit store shelves a week earlier than the revised date – in other words, on April 5. Technical specifications and special features are unchanged.

Rumor: Friends Season 1 Blu-ray in 2011

Spanish site Zona DVD is reporting that Warner Home Video is currently working on the first season of the acclaimed sitcom Friends for release on Blu-ray. This title will reportedly be, along with the Superman Ultimate Collector's Edition, one of the studio's major releases for 2011. The video will be remastered using the original film elements. Other details are still pending.

Eureka Announces Two Antonioni Films on Blu-ray

Eureka Entertainment has announced two early films from Italian director Michelangelo Antonioni for Blu-ray release on March 21: La signora senza camelie (1953) and Le Amiche (1955). The latter features a recent restoration by Cineteca di Bologna, L'Immagine Ritrovata, and Martin Scorsese's Film Foundation. Both will be presented in dual-format Blu-ray/DVD editions.
