Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Inception Makers Not Involved in 3D

Last week, reports indicated that Christopher Nolan was working on a stereoscopic conversion of Inception to release it on 3D Blu-ray. However, Wally Pfister ASC, the film's Oscar-winning director of photography, now has clarified that, while a 3D release is "definitely" going to happen, he's not taking part in that endeavor, and neither is Nolan. "In terms of what's happening with Inception, you know, Chris and I are like-minded in that way," he said.

European PS3s Seized at Customs

Customs officers of the European Union have been ordered to seize shipments of PS3 consoles entering the EU, after LG won a preliminary injunction against Sony in a patent dispute between the two companies involving the alleged use in the PS3 of Blu-ray technology belonging to LG. The import ban runs for at least ten days, but might be extended. For the moment, consoles in retailers' stock will not be recalled.

Mao’s Last Dancer Blu-ray Delayed, Target Exclusive

20th Fox Home Entertainment has announced that Mao's Last Dancer, originally announced for March 29, will finally be released on May 3. Additionally, the studio has informed that this movie will be available exclusively at Target. The length of this exclusivity period has not been disclosed.

Gulliver’s Travels Blu-ray Announced

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced Gulliver's Travels for Blu-ray release on April 19, on a BD/DVD/Digital Copy combo pack. Jack Black brings his irreverent humor to this adventure-comedy based on the classic Jonathan Swift tale. No 3D Blu-ray has been formally announced yet, but retailers also have a 3D BD/2D BD/DVD/DC up for preorder, in which would be the studio's first non-exclusive 3D release.

The 83rd Oscars and Blu-ray

After the recent Blu-ray announcement of Black Swan, all of the award-winning English-language feature films at the latest Academy Award ceremony are released or announced on BD – this time including even the feature documentary. The King's Speech (a Weinstein Company film, announced on Blu-ray by Anchor Bay for April 19) carried the day, with four Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actor (Colin Firth).

Hot on the heels of the Academy Award win for Natalie Portman as Best Actress in her role as an ambitious ballerina, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has officially announced Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan for Blu-ray release on March 29, with two hours of special features (nearly half exclusive to Blu-ray). A BD/DVD/Digital Copy combo pack will also be available exclusively at Target.

Twilight Zone Seasons 1 & 2 Blu-ray Coming Up in the UK

Blu-ray enthusiasts without region A playback capability will be glad to know that an early announcement to UK retailers indicates that Fremantle Home Entertainment will release The Twilight Zone: Season 1 on April 18 and Season 2 on May 16. No release details are available at the moment. This classic TV series is being released in the US by Image Entertainment, but all discs are locked to region A.

Human Planet Blu-ray Announced

Gettysburg, Extended Gods and Generals Announced on Blu-ray

Warner Home Video has announced that on May 24 it will release on Blu-ray two movies depicting events from the Civil War directed by Ronald F. Maxwell: Gettysburg (Director's Cut) and Gods and Generals (Extended Director's Cut, with an hour of never-before-seen footage). Each will be packaged in a two-disc Digibook including a 48-page booklet with photographs, biographies, timeline, production notes, maps and more.

Three Sophia Loren Films Coming Up on Blu-ray

Kino Lorber has announced the Blu-ray release of three films directed by Vittorio de Sica and starring Sophia Loren, with a street date of May 3: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow (Ieri, oggi, domani, 1963), Marriage Italian Style, (Matrimonio all'italiana, 1964) and Sunflower (I girasoli, 1970). The first will come out in a two-disc set including a feature-length documentary.

Christopher Nolan Converting Inception to 3D

Christopher Nolan has often voiced his reservations about 3D movies and especially stereoscopic conversions. However, during a recent interview, filmmaker Jonathan Liebesman (director of Wrath of the Titans) surprisingly revealed that Christopher Nolan is currently converting Inception into 3D, with a view to a future 3D Blu-ray release.

Made by the filmmakers behind the original Blue Crush – Blue Crush 2 follows a high-spirited California surfer girl as she treks across the magnificent beaches of South Africa, making new friends, finding romance and riding epic waves. Starring Sasha Jackson, Sharni Vinson and Elizabeth Mathis, the film also features many world-class female surfers from the professional Roxy team. Filmed along one of the most exotic and dangerous shorelines in the world as well as other spectacular South African surf destinations, Blue Crush 2 will be available for a limited time only as a Blu-ray Combo Pack including a DVD and downloadable Digital Copy. Redbox Passes Netflix in Physical Rentals

During January, Redbox first took the overall lead in physical media rentals, with about 35% of the market. Netflix, the former disc rental leader, accounted for approximately 30%, tied with brick-and-mortar stores (including Blockbuster). Analysts expect this trend to continue. No specific Blu-ray percentages were released.

Unstoppable was the top-selling title on Blu-ray during the week ended February 20, according to Nielsen VideoScan.The latest Tony Scott/Denzel Washington team-up got 36% of its total sales from its BD version. In a week with hardly any major new releases, the rest of the top three was filled with veteran titles, with Inception coming in second and Iron Man 2 third.

Warner Home Video has announced Grand Prix for Blu-ray release on May 24. This 1966 racing-themed action movie, starring James Garner and Eva-Marie Saint, was directed by John Frankenheimer and spectacularly shot on 65mm. It had been released in 2006 on the defunct HD DVD format.

Yes, Due Date is directed by Todd Philips, the same guy who directed the laughfest that is The Hangover. And yes, it stars Zach Galifianakis, who also starred in The Hangover - but that is where the similarities end. Much as Apatow's Funny People turned off as many fans as it created, today's Blu-ray release of Due Date will likely have the same effect – fan's looking for The Hangover 2 are advised to wait a few more months, but those open to a new comedy experience will sure to be entertained.
