During the week of 4/10/11 - 4/16/11 Blu-ray sales were up 205% in a year on year comparison with revenue hitting $50.1m. The massive growth was spurred by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, which scored 46% of all sales on BD for the week in question. Other big titles during the week were Tron: Legacy, The Incredibles, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader and Tangled. Catalogue sales of Harry Potter 1-6 BDs were heavily in favour of BD as many collectors opted to upgrade their collections with the release of the new film, this will also have pushed the BD:DVD ratio higher for the week.
This week, April 17-24, saw the release of multiple Academy Award winner The Kings Speech but there was no mega-blockbuster release like Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 to push Blu-ray sales so there could be a slight easing of the ratio. However, after three record breaking weeks the future of Blu-ray looks very bright and with big blockbuster films expected for the latter half of the year even higher sales ratios in favour of BD may be possible as it takes over the enthusiast and casual markets.
