Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Blu-ray Sees Boost in Consumer Adoption

Since the end of the format war, consumers are increasingly purchasing Blu-ray when given the option of purchasing Blu-ray or DVD. Recent retail reports show that Disney's release of Oscar award-winning film 'No Country for Old Men' has sold between 10-15% of its total home video unit sales on the Blu-ray format. Previously, the industry has been accustomed to seeing high profile day-and-date releases selling between 5-10% on high definition formats.

Disney Announces The Recruit for Blu-ray

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Al Pacino film 'The Recruit' to Blu-ray on June 3rd. Video will be presented as 1080p AVC and be accompanied by a 5.1 PCM soundtrack. Extras will mirror the DVD release with audio commentary with Donaldson and Farrell, an "Inside the CIA" featurette, and deleted scenes.

Signs Coming to Blu-ray

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has announced that they will release the M. Night Shyamalan thriller 'Signs' for Blu-ray on June 3rd. Video will be presented as 1080p AVC and be accompanied by a 5.1 PCM soundtrack. Extras include a making-of featurette, deleted scenes, multi-angle storyboard presentation, and an early M. Night Shyamlan short film.

Sharp Aims for High Power Blu-ray Laser Diodes

Sharp Electronics has revealed their roadmap for Blu-ray laser diodes, with a overall goal to make their products smaller and more powerful. As announced in February of this year, they will begin mass production of their 250mW blue laser diode next month, which will allow for recording of dual layer Blu-ray media at up to 6x speed.

Semi-Pro Coming to Blu-ray in June

New Line Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Will Ferrell comedy 'Semi-Pro' to Blu-ray on June 3rd, day-and-date with the DVD release. No specs have been announced at this time, but expect VC-1 video accompanied by a DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. No extras have been announced at this time.

Fox/MGM Reveal Additional 2008 Titles

Our good friend Bill over at The Digital Bits has let his fingers do the walking and contacted studios regarding their upcoming plans for Blu-ray releases now that the format war is officially over. The only studio forthcoming with new information was surprisingly the Fox/MGM group, who revealed some of their upcoming titles that are currently in the planning phase.

Walk Hard BD-Live Features Revealed

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has revealed the BD-Live features for the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story', due to hit store shelves on April 8th, day-and-date with the DVD release. In addition to having access to numerous theatrical and home video previews, viewers will be able to download video of Bill Hader as Derek Stone, a historian and expert "Coxologist". These three features will be exclusive to the Blu-ray release.

PS3 BD-Live Update Coming This Month

Sony Computer Entertainment has announced that they will issue a firmware update later this month that will enable the PlayStation 3 (PS3) to playback BD-Live (Profile v2.0) Blu-ray movie discs. BD-Live allows your Blu-ray player (in this case, a PS3) to access additional content via an Internet connection. Some already revealed BD-Live features include downloading related movie trailers, sending a ringtone to your cellphone, and playing interactive online games.

Kaguya Footage Coming to Blu-ray

Pony Canyon has announced that they will release 'Kaguya Tsuki Sekai Hiko' for Blu-ray in Japan on June 18th, a full month before the DVD release. This disc will feature 17 minutes of high definition footage of the Moon and Earthrise as shot by NHK and JAXA's Kaguya probe. The footage has been set to classical music, and will give viewers a never before seen look at our closest celestial neighbor.

Rob Halford Plans Blu-ray Music Release

Metal God Entertainment has announced that they will release Rob Halford's 'Live Insurrection - Remastered' as a Blu-ray music release on September 23rd. The title, which is a high definition master of the CD of the same name, will be packaged in a digipak with an original Rob Halford autograph and 20-page booklet including rare pictures and and exclusive linear notes. The release will utilizes Blu-ray's advanced audio specifications to provide the ultimate audio experience.

First Look Announces War, Inc. for Blu-ray (Updated)

First Look Studios has announced that they will release the John Cusack comedy 'War, Inc.' for Blu-ray on July 1st, day-and-date with the DVD release. No technical specs have been announced at this time, but previous Blu-ray release were encoded using VC-1 and featured a Dolby Digital audio track. Special features have yet to be announced as well.

Corel Releases WinDVD 9 Plus Blu-ray Software

Corel has announced the latest version of their popular PC movie playback software: WinDVD 9 Plus Blu-ray. This updated version features a new user interface, improved upscalling software (for DVD viewing), enhanced Blu-ray playback options, as well as support for high definition audio. Additionally, the software supports playback of the popular AVCHD codec used for home video authoring.

Mitsubishi Introduces Two Blu-ray Recorders

Mitsubishi Electronics has announced that they will release two Blu-ray recorders, the DVR-BZ100 and DVR-BZ200, on May 24th in Japan. The BZ100 will feature a 250GB hard drive, while the BZ200 gets the beefier 500GB hard drive. Both players utilizes an AVC encoder which allows them to store 1080p high definition video on either a Blu-ray disc, DVD, or the local hard drive.

Sony Japan Announces Peter Pan and Chapter 27

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment Japan has announced that they will bring both 'Peter Pan' and 'Chapter 27' to Blu-ray. 'Peter Pan' will be released on May 21st along with many titles already announced for the US, and 'Chapter 27' will follow two days later. Both titles will be released on BD-50s with 1080p AVC video encoding and both English and Japanese 5.1 Dolby TrueHD audio tracks.

BBC Brings Wild China to Blu-ray

The BBC has announced that they will bring the documentary 'Wild China' to Blu-ray on July 1st, day-and-date with the DVD release. The two-disc set will include all six 50min episodes, including "The Great Ricebowl", "The Forests of Shangri La", "Tibet", "Beyond the Great Wall", "Land of the Dragon" and "Crowded Coasts". Also included will be the making-of featurette "Hunting Dragon."

Image Entertainment Announces Blu-ray Plans

Image Entertainment has announced their upcoming slate of films to be released on the Blu-ray format. As previously reported, April 15th will see the release of 'Before the Devil Knows You're Dead' followed by the May 6th release of 'The Air I Breathe'. On May 20th, Image Entertainment will release the Tony Award-winning musical 'Company' in addition to the previously announced cult-classic 'Short Circuit'.

Sony Invests $110M into Blu-ray Production

Now that Blu-ray has been selected as the next generation optical disc, Sony is investing $100M in equipment purchases and property improvements to their Terre Haute Digital Audio Disc Corp (DADC) production facility. The additional investment also includes the addition of 65 positions to manage the new production increases.

Celestial Pictures Announces First Blu-ray Title

Celestial Pictures, a distributor of Asian cinema, has announced that they will release the 1984 romantic-comedy 'Behind the Yellow Line' for Blu-ray on April 1st. No specs have been announced at this time. Special features are also yet to be announced, but expect similar offerings as found on the current DVD, which includes behind-the-scenes footage, trailers, color stills, original poster, production notes, and info about the cast and crew.

Zak Penn Eyes Blu-ray for The Grand

Director Zak Penn is already imagining the possibilities for the eventual Blu-ray release of his film 'The Grand', set to be released theatrically on March 21st. The film was shot with high definition cameras, making the transition to Blu-ray a fairly straight-forward process. Additionally, the added storage made available by Blu-ray means that he can include extras that can't fit on a DVD.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Diane Lane thriller 'Untraceable' to Blu-ray on May 13th, day-and-date with the DVD release. No specs have been announced at this time, but expect the typical Sony 1080p AVC with Dolby TrueHD surround sound. Extras include four behind-the-scenes featurettes and audio commentary.

Batman Begins Dated for Blu-ray

Warner Home Video has revealed that they will release blockbuster film 'Batman Begins' for Blu-ray on July 8th, day-and-date with the DVD re-release. No specs or extra features have been announced at this time, but we do know that the film will be offered either as a single disc release, or as part of a limited-edition gift set.

Final Specs for Weeds: Season 3 Blu-ray

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has revealed the final specs for the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Weeds: Season 3'. Video will be presented in 1080p widescreen, and be accompanied by a 7.1 PCM audio track. Extras include eight commentaries with cast and crew, seven Pop-Up trivia tracks, "Uncle AWOL" featurette, Mary-Kate Olsen biography, "Good Morning Agrestic!" featurette, gag reel, Weeds soundtrack sampler, and "Little Boxes" featurette and musical montage.

Acer Launches Blu-ray Notebooks

At a press event Wednesday, Acer (who recently acquired both Gateway and Packard Bell computer manufacturers) announced the arrival of their Aspire Gemstone Blue 6920g and 8920g notebook computers. Seemingly built for Blu-ray playback, these notebooks feature a Blu-ray drive (of course), 1080p displays, and a 5.1 speaker set-up.

Arcam Reveals Plans for a Blu-ray Player

High-end AV manufacturer Arcam has revealed that they are currently developing a Blu-ray Disc player to add to their product line-up. The player, which is scheduled to be released sometime next year, will make use of a proprietary platform instead of borrowing from existing manufacturers. No price was mentioned, but with their DVD player weighing in at over $3000, don't expect any bargain player for this UK company.

Disney Officially Announces Narnia

Buena Vista Home Entertainment has announced that they will release 'The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe' for Blu-ray on May 13th, just in time for the theatrical release of 'The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian'. The film will be presented, utilizing a 2.35:1 1080p AVC video encode accompanied by a 5.1 24-bit audio track, in its theatrical form, and not in the 147 minute extended form as offered on the 4-disc DVD release.

Phoenix Entertainment Goes Blu

Phoenix Entertainment has announced that they will bring 'Naked Beneath the Water' to Blu-ray on March 25th. Video will presented as 1080p AVC that will be accompanied by a 5.1 Dolby Digital soundtrack. Extras include audio commentary with Sean Cain, the documentary "Big Explosion", a blooper reel, and an alternate ending. Exclusive to the Blu-ray release will be additional deleted and extended scenes.

Cyberlink Corp. has released the latest version of their popular home disc authoring software - PowerProducer 5. The software assists in the creation of Blu-ray disc movies using the AVCHD video format to give professional-looking discs on your home computer. This fifth version includes improvements to the overall user interface as well as a set of new design tools for creating customizable disc menus using imported photos and videos.

Mariah Carey's The Adventures of Mimi Coming to Blu-ray

Image Entertainment has announced that they will bring the concert film 'Mariah Carey: the The Adventures of Mimi' to Blu-ray on April 15th, day-and-date with the DVD release. The concert, which was shot entirely in high definition, was the most successful tour ever for the pop artist. This two disc release will feature 19 tracks spanning her entire music career.

Specs for Rambo Blu-ray Releases

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has revealed the specs and special features for the upcoming Blu-ray releases of 'Rambo: First Blood Part II', 'Rambo III', and 'Rambo' which are scheduled to be released on May 27th. The forth installment in the series, 'Rambo', will be presented in 1080p video accompanied DTS-HD Master Audio. The two disc set will feature a multitude of special features, including digital copies of the film for use on portable devises.
