This week, film fans get another taste of classic cinema with the Blu-ray release of the now legendary Jack Nicholson film '
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' from Warner Home Video. When a film of this caliber gets released on Blu-ray - winner of five Academy Awards including Best Picture - its nearly impossible to ignore.
I say "almost" because the lack of a lossless audio track almost seems criminal at this point, and those digibook releases just aren't everyone's favorite Blu-ray "bonus feature". I realize that there
may not be any audible difference between the supplied Dolby Digital track and the studio master, but that is the point. The inclusion of a lossless audio track would have prevented me from wondering if this release is lacking in the audio department. As for the digibook packaging, just count me as one of the people who enjoy uniformity on their Blu-ray racks. I had thought the studios agreed to do uniform packaging with the blue cases, but it seems that Warner wants to be different. Does anyone else remember the Warner cardboard DVD cases, or have we all blocked this horrible memory from our collective conscious?
Regardless of the presentation, all will agree that the Blu-ray release easily trumps the previous DVD releases, and is a must buy. I mean, let's be honest here... they could have shipped each disc in a tube sock and I still would have bought it. The movie is just that good.
Also out this week is Liongate's release of '
The Bank Job' featuring the British action star Jason Statham. I haven't had a chance to check out this film yet, but hey, I watch anything with Jason Statham once.
If this weeks offerings seem light, then just be thankful. Universal makes their dramatic entry into Blu-ray next week, and the week after that is going to murder your wallet, no matter who you are.
