Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Night of the Creeps Coming to Blu-ray (Updated)

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the horror film 'Night of the Creeps: Director's Cut' to Blu-ray on October 20th, day-and-date with the DVD release and just in time for Halloween. Video will be presented in 1080p AVC accompanied by a 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtrack.

Magnolia Details Girlfriend Experience Blu-ray

Magnolia Home Entertainment has revealed the special features for the upcoming Blu-ray release of Steven Soderbergh's 'The Girlfriend Experience', which is set to hit store shelves on September 29, day-and-date with the DVD. The disc will include an unrated alternate cut of the film, an audio commentary with Soderbergh and actress Sasha Grey, and the HDNet documentary "A Look at The Girlfriend Experience."

After a number of delays, one of the best mockumentaries of all time arrives on Blu-ray today - 'This is Spinal Tap'. From famed director Rob Reiner, this film tells the story of the fictional heavy metal band Spinal Tap and their attempt to return to fame with a new album and tour. Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, and Harry Shearer form the most hilarious band ever created, and its wonderful to finally have this timeless comedy on Blu-ray.

Blu-ray Player Penetration Up 71%

Blu-ray Disc player household penetration is up to 12.3 million for the first quarter of 2009, a 71% gain year over year, according to new data from research firm Centris, just published in its report “U.S. Communications and Entertainment”. This includes 7 million households with a PlayStation 3 (up 52%).

Onkyo Announces BD507 Blu-ray Player for the US

A month after its European announcement, the Onkyo DV-BD507 is also makeing its way to the US. It is BD-Live compatible, supports 1080/24p and 1080p upscaling and decodes Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. It also supports AVCHD and DivX-HD playback. It is available now at a suggested retail price of $449.

Haunting in Connecticut Tops UK Charts

Entertainment in Video's 'The Haunting in Connecticut' was the top-selling Blu-ray in the UK in the week ended July 26, according to data from the British Video Association. It was also the lone new release to make the top 10. 'Gran Torino' continued to do very well, with number 2 in the charts, followed by another veteran, 'The Dark Knight'.

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced the technical specs and special features for the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine', which is scheduled to be released on September 15th, day-and-date with the DVD release. The Marine 2 Headed to Blu-ray

According to reports, 'The Marine 2' will be heading to Blu-ray this holiday season, day-and-date with the DVD release. Starring pro-wrestler, and son of former pro- wrestler "The Million Dollar Man", Ted DiBiase Jr., the film is a direct-to-video sequel to 'The Marine' (which starred another pro-wrestler, John Cena).

Lord of the Rings Extended Edition Blu-ray Next Year?

In an interview with Collider.com, director Peter Jackson gave some insight into the upcoming Blu-ray releases of 'The Lord of the Rings'. He was able to not only confirm what we already knew, that the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy' would present the theatrical versions of the films, but also that the Extended Editions of the films would be available on Blu-ray next year.

Lexicon Announces THX-certified BD/SACD/DVD-A Player

High-end AV manufacturer Lexicon has announced its first Blu-ray player, model BD-30. This will sport a THX certification, and it will also support Super Audio CD and DVD-Audio. Image processing comes via Anchor Bay's VRS technology. It is expected to be available later this year and retail for $3,499. It will be presented at the upcoming CEDIA Expo.

Rental Window for Brothers Bloom Blu-ray

Summit Home Entertainment, always looking for novel ways to market its titles, has now announced that the movie 'The Brothers Bloom' will be available on Blu-ray on September 29 for the rental channel exclusively. A sell-through release is expected for an unspecified date in 2010. No specifications for either release are available.

Sony Announces Three New Blu-ray Players

Sony has announced that they will bring two Blu-ray Disc Mega Changers and one Blu-ray Disc Player to the market this fall. Both the Sony BDP-CX7000ES and the Sony BDP-CX960 will hold 400 discs (Blu-ray, DVD, and CD) and connect to GraceNote for disc title information. Both changers will feature full Blu-ray playback support.

Wolverine Blu-ray Dated for September

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has revealed that they will bring 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' to Blu-ray on September 15th, day-and-date with the DVD release. No technical specs have been announced at this time, though you can expect the typical 1080p AVC and DTS-HD Master Audio presentation from Fox. Special features have also yet to be announced.

Rentrak Adds Blu-ray to Screen Media

Rentrak has recently added Blu-ray titles to their revenue sharing program Screen Media Ventures. The program allows smaller and independent studios to make their home media content available to a wider audience while earning commission on each rental unit. As Blu-ray has continued to grow, it became impossible for Rentrak to ignore such a huge market for their participating content providers.

Halo Legends Coming to Blu-ray in 2010

While Microsoft may be holding back on Blu-ray for their Xbox 360 video game system, they will allow a new seven part anime series based on the popular Xbox-exclusive game Halo to be released on the high definition format. 'Halo Legends', which is currently being worked for a 2010 release, will feature seven short anime films based in the Halo universe.

BD Sales Information: July 13-19 (Update)

Lionsgate Home Entertainment topped the Blu-ray sales charts this past week with the Blu-ray release of 'The Haunting in Connecticut', while the previous week's top seller, Summit Entertainment's 'Knowing', slipped one spot to hold a close second place, according to Nielsen VideoScan First Alert. The Blu-ray release of 'Mad Men: Season Two', also a Lionsgate title, debuted in the third spot for the week ending July 19th.

Little Movement in UK Sales Charts

Apparently, it was a slow week for Blu-ray sales in the UK, as the top two titles were exactly the same as the previous week, according to the British Video Association: 'Gran Torino' and 'The International'. The top-selling new entry, 'Torchwood: Children of Earth', only managed third place. The rest of the chart was filled with already-released titles.
