Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Willy Wonka Blu-ray Pushed Ahead Two Weeks

Warner Home Video has announced that the upcoming Blu-ray digibook release of 'Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory' will now be released on October 6th. Originally scheduled for an October 20th release date, no reason was given for the release date bump and no technical specs or special features have changed.

Woodstock Blu-ray Ships 300,000 Copies

Since it was released on June 9, the BD edition of 'Woodstock: 30 Days of Peace and Music Director's Cut Ultimate Collector's Edition' has shipped 300,000 units to retail since its June 9 release and sold through 50% of those units to consumers, according to Warner Home Video. The studio is pleased, with 10 days still to go until the actual 40th anniversary of the historic music festival, and given the title's premium price tag.

WB Vaults 3 DVDs in Anticipation of BD, Including Zhivago

Warner Home Video has announced that from September 4, it will stop DVD sales of three of its top-selling catalog titles: 'Caddyshack', 'The Exorcist' and 'Doctor Zhivago'. All three titles are expected to be released on Blu-ray in 2010, from remastered prints and with new bonus content, although no specific date has been revealed.

Lite-On Conservative about BD Player Market in 2009

Taiwan-based manufacturer of optical disc drives Lite-On IT holds a conservative view of the global market for Blu-ray Disc players in 2009, according to company CEO Guang-chung Chen. The reason is that significant growth in BD player sales requires two things: price drops of BD movie discs and penetration of high-definition TVs.

My Life in Ruins Coming to Blu-ray

In an early announcement to retailers, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has revealed that they will bring 'My Life in Ruins' to Blu-ray on October 6th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Technical specs have not been announced at this time, but you can expect the typical 1080p AVC video and DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack presentation from the studio. Special features have also not been announced at this time.

Austria Blu-ray Sales Picking Up Pace

According to a new report from GfK Retail and Technology, the sale of Blu-ray Disc players in Austria has increased substantially this year. Retailers have reported that during the second quarter, Blu-ray unit sales accounted for 10% of all player sales and grabbed a 37% value market share.

Rome Box Set Gets Dated and Detailed

HBO Home Entertainment in conjunction with Warner Home Video have announced the technical specs and special features for the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Rome: The Complete Series', which is scheduled to hit store shelves on November 17th, day-and-date with the DVD re-release. The 10-disc box set will feature 1080p 1.78:1 AVC video accompanied by a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

Wolverine BD to Feature Live IMDB Access

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced that it is introducing new BD Live technology tied to popular movie database IMDB.com with the Blu-ray release of 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine'. Dubbed "Live Lookup," the IMDB feature will let allow viewers to hook into the site via BD Live to access up-to-date filmographies and other information related to 'Wolverine' cast and crew.

Germany: Blu-ray Grows 300% Year-over-year

The German Federal Association for Audiovisual Media has released the figures for the home video market in the first half of 2009. The revenue on Blu-ray software sales have more than tripled over the same period of 2008, with 41 million euros, over 13 million euros last year. Unit sales have also quadrupled, with 2.0 million discs sold, compared to half a million units sold in the first half of 2008.

Dance Flick BD Gets Detailed

Paramount Home Entertainment has revealed the full release details for the Wayans brothers movie 'Dance Flick', which as we reported last week, will hit store shelves on Blu-ray on September 8, ahead of the DVD. All extras will be in high definition, and they include the featurette "Dance Dance Dance! With the Wayans Wayans Wayans!", dancing outtakes, deleted scenes and a theatrical trailer.

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced that it will release 'Away We Go' on Blu-ray on September 29, day-and-date with the DVD. Sam Mendes's follow-up to the star-studded, award-winning 'Revolutionary Road' was this small movie that explores the comedic twists and turns in one couple's journey across contemporary America, starring John Krasinski (The Office) and Maya Rudolph (Saturday Night Live).

For actor Billy Bob Thornton, the greatest complement he could receive for his magnificent performance in 'Sling Blade' is that if it wasn't for his name in the credits, you would have never known he was in the film. Thornton's portrayal of Karl is so absolute that it is difficult to connect his performance in this film to any of his previous performances. Today, we have the privilege of re-experiencing this film in high definition on Blu-ray.

Alien Prequel Gives Hope to Quadrilogy Blu-ray

Many of us were really excited to hear that 20th Century Fox was preparing a Blu-ray release of the Alien quadrilogy (going as far as including it as a coming-soon title in a flyer) and were equally disappointed when it vanished from the 2009 schedule. Now we see a possible reason why: an Alien prequel is in the works, and none other than Ridley Scott has been signed for the project.

Stargate 15th Anniversary Blu-ray Coming Up

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has announced that it will release 'Stargate: 15th Anniversary Edition' on Blu-ray on October 27. This release will feature a new 1080p encode, along with a 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. Additionally, it will offer both the theatrical and the extended cuts of the movie, and four hours of extras, including three new featurettes, a trivia track, and a gag reel.

Secondhand Lions Blu-ray for December

New Line Home Entertainment, in conjunction with Warner Home Video, has announced that it will release 'Secondhand Lions' on Blu-ray on December 1. 'Secondhand Lions' is a coming-of-age movie, starring Haley Joel Osment in the role of Walter, a young boy who is sent to spend the summer with his two crazy uncles (Michael Caine and Robert Duvall).

Watchmen Dominates the UK Charts Too

The postmodern superheroes of 'Watchmen' also were the top-sellers on Blu-ray in the UK charts, according to the British Video Association. Note that, whereas this movie was released in the US by Warner Home Video in its director's cut, its European home video rights belong to Paramount, and its UK release includes the theatrical cut only.

Slim PS3 Surfaces on Amazon Germany (Update)

After the first alleged spy pics appeared on the Internet in May, rumors have been rife about the imminent launch of a slim PlayStation 3. Now, adding fuel to the fire, Amazon Germany has put up the product on its website. Granted, this is merely a placeholder without any price or product details, but it is relevant, especially barely a month before major fairs such as IFA, CEDIA and the Tokyo Game Show.

The Craft, Frankenstein, Wolf Announced on Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced three catalog titles for release on Blu-ray on October 13: 'The Craft', 'Mary Shelley's Frankenstein' (directed by Kenneth Branagh and starring Robert De Niro as the Creature), and 'Wolf' (directed by Mike Nichols and starring Jack Nicholson and Michelle Pfeiffer). Contrary to prior information, the two latter movies will be available separately.

Egoyan's Adoration Announced on Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced 'Adoration' on Blu-ray for October 13, day-and-date with the DVD. 'Adoration' was directed by Atom Egoyan ('Exotica', 'The Sweet Hereafter') and premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Ecumenical Jury Prize. It will be presented in 1.78:1 1080p video, accompanied by English, Spanish and Portuguese audio and subtitles.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced 'Assassination of a High School President' on Blu-ray for October 6, day-and-date with the DVD. 'Assassination...' is an acid-tongued high-school comedy, starring Mischa Barton, Reece Daniel Thompson and Bruce Willis. This movie never had a real theatrical release because the releasing division of the Yari Film Group filed for bankruptcy.

Antichrist Blu-ray Arrives in the UK in November

In an early announcement to retailers, it has been revealed that Artificial Eye is set to release Lars von Trier's shocking and controversial movie, 'Antichrist', uncut, on Blu-ray on November 23, day-and-date with the DVD. Paramount Gives Dance Flick BD a Headstart

Paramount Home Entertainment, recognizing Blu-ray as a growing segment of the business, has announced that it will release 'Dance Flick' on an unrated BD on September 8, four to eight weeks ahead of the DVD release. Special features will include outtakes, deleted scenes and an alternate ending. The DVD will initially only be available for the rental channel, in a barebones disc.

BD Sales Information: July 20-26 (Update)

The week ended July 26 belonged clearly to Warner's 'Watchmen', which was the top-selling title on Blu-ray, according to Nielsen Videoscan First Alert. The other major new entry, Universal's stop-motion fantasy film 'Coraline', got in second place. The number-one title of the previous week, Lionsgate's 'The Haunting in Connecticut', dropped to number 5.

Watchmen Breaks BD Share Record with 36% Ratio

As we reported on our previous post, a full 36 percent of disc sales of Warner's 'Watchmen' have been on Blu-ray. This is a record-breaking figure, even for action movies. For example, back in September 2008, 'Iron Man' got "only" 17% of its sales from Blu-ray. The previous BD percentage record was for 'Quantum of Solace', released March 24, 2009, which got 28%.

Natural Born Killers: Director's Cut Gets Delayed

Warner Home Video has announced that they have delayed the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Natural Born Killers: Director's Cut', which is now scheduled to hit store shelves on October 13th. Originally scheduled for an August 25th release, no reason was given for the delay, and it appears that no technical specs or special features have changed with the delay.
