The monsters were too much for the wizard to handle, as Dreamworks animated feature '
Monsters vs. Aliens' took the top spot over last week's other high profile release, '
The Wizard of Oz: 70th Anniversary Edition' which came in second on the Nielsen VideoScan Blu-ray charts. And after two consecutive weeks in the top spot, '
X-Men Origins: Wolverine' drops to the third spot.
Here is the Blu-ray top 10 (previous-week ranking in parenthesis):
- • Monsters vs. Aliens
- • Wizard of Oz
- (1) X-Men Origins: Wolverine
- • Superman/Batman: Public Enemies
- (7) The Dark Knight
- (10) Earth
- • The Kingdom
- • Labyrinth
- (9) Gladiator
- • The Dark Crystal
It appears that 'Monsters vs. Aliens' suffered from poor advertising, with only 13% of all units being purchased on Blu-ray, while 35% of all 'Wizard of Oz' units sold were on the high definition format. 'Wolverine' continued to put up great numbers, generating 25% of the sales on Blu-ray.
Looking at the entire home video market, Blu-ray represented 12% of the market revenue, up 5.5% from the same period last year.
