Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Blood: The Last Vampire Anime Blu-ray Coming Up

In an early announcement to retailers, it has been revealed that Manga Home Entertainment will release 'Blood: The Last Vampire' on Blu-ray on November 24. This is the original animé on which the live-action movie slated for October 20 is based. No audio or video specifications or special features are available at this time.

Rumor: Lord of the Rings Blu-ray Pushed to 2010

In June, New Line Home Entertainment and Warner Home Video had pre-announced the Blu-ray release of 'The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy' for November 3. However, less than two months away from the purported release, there still hasn't been an official announcement, and some websites are already speculating over a delay of the trilogy to 2010.

Usage of BD-Live Increases

According to research by disc authoring company Deluxe, 25 million BD-Live discs have been connected to the Internet so far, and that figure should double by the end of the year. On average, consumers are connecting 4 million BD Live discs for online updates each month.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that it will release 'Sex, Lies and Videotape' on Blu-ray on November 17. Steven Soderbergh's first feature film won the Palme d'Or at the 1989 Cannes Film Festival, put Soderbergh in the spotlight and became one of the landmarks of independent cinema.

Léon (The Professional) Blu-ray for November

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced the Blu-ray release of Luc Besson's 'Léon' (also known as 'The Professional'), starring Jean Reno as a hitman who becomes the guardian of a 12-year-old girl (Natalie Portman, in her first starring role). The Blu-ray will hit store shelves on November 17, and will include both the theatrical and the extended cuts of the movie.

Orphan Blu-ray in Time for Halloween

Warner Home Video has set October 27 as the Blu-ray release date of the horror movie 'Orphan', directed by Jaume Collet-Serra ('House of Wax'), about a couple who adopts a 9-year-old girl who may be hiding a secret. The Blu-ray will include a digital copy of the movie, and a "chilling" alternate ending.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that it will release 'Angels & Demons' on Blu-ray on November 24, day-and-date with the DVD. This edition will include both the theatrical and extended versions of the movie. The BD will offer over 90 minutes of bonus features, as well as a digital copy of the extended film.

As we told you in June, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has now announced the European launch of movieIQ, a new BD-Live feature that offers viewers access to a real-time movie database. With a movieIQ enabled BD and an internet-connected player, movie fans can immediately access continuously updated information on cast and crew and explore relevant trivia such as production facts, music and soundtrack information all tied to scenes within the movie.

Tom Petty Live Anthology Coming Up

Tom Petty has announced through his official website the upcoming release of 'The Live Anthology', a collection which brings together 62 songs from 1978-2007 culled from hundreds of hours of live recordings. The deluxe box set of this compilation will include a high-resolution Blu-ray audio disc featuring all tracks in both stereo and 5.1 surround sound, with "256 times more audio resolution than a CD".

Samsung Adds YouTube and MKV, Plans BD Recorders, No 3-D

At IFA, Samsung didn't introduce new Blu-ray players, but it announced that player models BD-P1600, BD-P3600 and BD-P4600 will support YouTube and the MKV file format. Existing players will be able to access those features by upgrading the firmware. The company plans to launch BD recorders in 2010, and is holding a wait-and-see stance towards 3-D.

The Blu-ray sales chart for last week looked like a boys' club. According to data from Nielsen VideoScan First Alert, Universal's unrated actioner 'Fighting' narrowly won the top-selling spot over Disney's R-rated comedy 'Adventureland'. Coming in third was 'Smallville: The Complete Eighth Season'. In the meantime, last week's top seller, 'Hannah Montana: The Movie', plummeted to sixth place. Update: sales figures added.

Toshiba Announces Its First BD Laptop

Not content with putting out a set-top BD player, Toshiba announced today its first laptop with an integrated Blu-ray Disc drive: the Satellite P500. It will support BD-ROM, BD-R and BD-RE and DVD SuperMulti DL +/RW. It will come with a TrueBrite 18.4" display (with a resolution of either 1,680x950 or full 1920x1080), and integrated Resolution+ upscaling technology.

Toshiba Announces Its First Blu-ray Player

Toshiba America Consumer Products announced today its first Blu-ray player, model BDX2000. It supports BD-Live (Profile 2.0), 1080p video and DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD. It also features Regza-Link function, an SD card slot, and AVCHD playback (but no streaming video of any kind is mentioned). It will be available in November, with an MSRP of $249.99.

Philips Announces BD Players, Is Cautious about 3-D

Philips presented at the IFA fair two new Blu-ray players: the BDP7500 and the new flagship model BDP9500, both of which will be available in November, with a list price of €299.99 for the BDP7500 and €549.99 for the BDP9500. Philips also demonstrated a 3-D prototype version of its Cinema 21:9 television, and said it is working on three methods: active glasses, passive glasses, and no glasses.

Panasonic Unveils BD Recorders and 3-D Plans

During its IFA press conference, Panasonic presented two Blu-ray recorders (previously available in the UK only), under model numbers DMR-BS750 and BS850, with 250GB and 500GB of hard drive capacity, respectively. The company also showcased its 3-D focus and approach, which, like Sony, uses active-shutter glasses and will offer two channels of 1080p video. Product launch is promised for 2010.

Silicon Philosophies Presents High-speed AVC Encoder

Silicon Philosophies will present the Cinema Craft HD CC-HDe encoder at the upcoming IBC Exhibition in Amsterdam. This encoder produces "pristine" H.264/AVC files at faster than real-time speeds, drastically reducing the time normally required for HD encoding. Those files are also 100 percent Blu-ray compliant and seamlessly integrate with all professional BD/BD-J authoring applications. The encoder's compression algorithms and filters "are accurate and practically eliminate the need for re-encoding."

My Sister's Keeper Blu-ray Announced

New Line Home Entertainment, in conjunction with Warner Home Video, has announced that it will release the drama 'My Sister's Keeper' on Blu-ray on November 17, day and date with the DVD. This movie, directed by Nick Cassavetes and starring Cameron Diaz and Abigail Breslin, tells the story of a girl who had been specially conceived to be a match donor for her leukemia-stricken older sister but eventually sues for medical emancipation.

Ice Age 3 Blu-ray Gets October Date

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment will release 'Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs' on Blu-ray on October 27, day-and-date with the DVD. The BD edition will comprise three discs (BD/DVD/Digital copy), and will include an exclusive digital story maker and exclusive featurettes titled "Evolution Expedition," "Buck…Easel to Weasel" and "Falling for Scratte," as well as two shorts. It hasn't been revealed at this time whether a 3-D version of the movie will be included.

Sony Announces Two Players for Europe

Today at the IFA tech fair in Berlin, Sony revealed the newest additions to its Blu-ray player line up, the BDP-S560 and BDP-S760. Both models are fully Wi- Fi-enabled using Wireless-N. They are also Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) enabled, which means that by pressing a single button on the WPS enabled router a secure connection from your player to the wireless network is established.

Criterion Signs Deal with IFC, Plans Che for December

IFC Films has struck an agreement with the Criterion Collection for the release of select titles from IFC's library. The first Blu-ray in the deal was 'Gomorrah', which is slated for a November 24 release, but IFC confirmed Tuesday a larger partnership between the two companies, encompassing twelve titles on Blu-ray and/or DVD. The next title in the deal is Steven Soderbergh's two-part biopic 'Che' in December.

Buster Keaton's The General Blu-ray for November

Kino Video is set to release Buster Keaton's silent-cinema masterpiece 'The General' on Blu-ray on November 10, making it the first silent feature film on BD in America (although the absolute record is for the UK release of 'Sunrise', which comes out September 21). This release has been mastered from a 35mm archive print struck from the original camera negative.

Objectified Documentary Announced on Blu-ray

Plexifilm has announced the Blu-ray release of 'Objectified', a documentary about our complex relationship with manufactured objects and, by extension, the people who design them. Initially no BD edition was envisaged, but after fans demanded it via numerous blog comments on the film's website, a high-definition edition has been added for September 29. No audio or video specifications are available.

Sony Forges Ahead with 3-D Global Launch by 2010

The Financial Times reports that Sir Howard Stringer, Sony chief executive, will announce plans at the IFA technology fair in Berlin this week to sell 3-D-compatible Bravia television sets by the end of 2010, and also 3-D Vaio laptop computers, PS3 consoles and Blu-ray Disc players. In turn, the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) reminded today that it is still working on a uniform specification to ensure consistent delivery of 3-D content across the Blu-ray Disc platform.

Today on Blu-ray - September 1st

There is a bit of controversy with one of today's releases, so I'm just going to get this out of the way as quickly as possible to avoid any further distraction. While not a horrible presentation, the Blu-ray release of ‘Gladiator' does not live up to the promise of Paramount's Sapphire Series to “present each cinematic gem in the highest quality.” The studio used a clearly outdated master for this release, a mistake that readers may recall from a few early Blu-ray releases (specifically, the initial release of ‘The Fifth Element'). One can only hope that the studio will recognize that mistake, and offer replacement discs to those who are purchasing the film today (again, similar to how Sony handled their TFE issue).
