Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Air America Announced for Blu-ray

In an early announcement to retailers, Lionsgate Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Mel Gibson and Robert Downey Jr. action-comedy 'Air America' to Blu-ray on November 24th. Technical specs have not been announced at this time, though you can expect the typical 1080p AVC and DTS-HD Master Audio presentation from the studio.

FUNimation Announces Three Blu-ray Titles

In an early announcement to retailers, FUNimation has announced that they will bring 'Tsubasa: Season One' and 'Vexille: 2 Disc Special Edition' to Blu-ray on November 10th. A week later they will bring 'Fullmetal Alchemist: The Movie' to Blu-ray on November 17th. Technical specs have not been announced at this time.

Fight Club Blu-ray Gets New Content

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has officially announced and detailed the Blu-ray release of 'Fight Club: 10th Anniversary Edition', which as we told you will hit shelves on November 17. It will be presented on a 50GB dual-layer disc, with 2.40:1 1080p AVC video and a 5.1 DTS HD Master Audio soundtrack.

Not Forgotten Blu-ray Announced

Starz/Anchor Bay Entertainment has announced that it will release the thriller 'Not Forgotten' on Blu-ray on November 3, day-and-date with the DVD. Video will be a 2.35:1 1080p encode, accompanied by a 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtrack. Extras consist of a behind-the-scenes featurette, an audio commentary, and the theatrical trailer.

PS3 3.0 Firmware Version Goes Online

As promised during the gamescom conference, Sony Computer Entertainment has released version 3.0 of the system software for the PS3. As of this writing, update is only available via the Internet. Apart from changes in the XMB and other enhancements, the update contains some new features and improvements for those who use the PS3 as a Blu-ray player.

No BD for The Shield, 16mm Film Stock Blamed

'The Shield: The Complete Series Collection' has recently been announced on DVD but not Blu-ray. Our friends at TV Shows on DVD looked further into the matter, and found confirmation from a Twitter post by show creator Shawn Ryan that the studio considers that the film stock the series was shot on is "of insufficient quality to put out on Blu-ray."

Magnolia Has Answers and Food on BD

Magnolia Home Entertainment has announced two titles for release on Blu-ray on November 3, day-and-date with the DVD: 'The Answer Man', an independent romantic comedy starring Jeff Daniels and Laurel Graham, and 'Food, Inc.', a scathing documentary on the food industry. Audio and video specifications have not been revealed at this time.

BD Prices Fall, Catalog Spending Rises 72%

Pricing for BD software has dropped significantly everywhere, fostering an increase in demand and spending. In the US, BD software pricing has fallen more than 10% for new releases and a full one-third on catalog titles since 2008. This has caused spending on theatrical Blu-ray catalog to increase 72% from the same 2008 period. However, retailers would like prices to drop more.

Concert Blu-ray Wave from Eagle Rock

Eagle Rock Entertainment is releasing no fewer than five concert titles on Blu-ray in the fall. 'Eminem: Live from New York City' and 'Toto: Falling in Between Live' will be released on October 20, while 'Earth, Wind and Fire: Live at Montreux 1997', 'Billy Idol: In Super Overdrive Live' and 'Carlos Santana Presents: Blues at Montreux 2004' have a release date of November 17.

Geek Peek: Star Trek BD Gift Set with Enterprise Replica

For once, special-packaging enthusiasts don't have to look overseas. Amazon is offering J.J. Abrams' 'Star Trek' in an exclusive limited-edition Blu-ray gift set containing a "screen-accurate" 8.5-inch replica of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701, modeled directly from the digital-effects files used in the making of the movie. Note this figure isn't cheap plastic, but rather solid metal.

Rumor: Back to the Future, Jurassic Park on BD in 2010

Two of the most requested film franchises might be on Blu-ray soon (or rather, not so soon). Cinema site Nuke The Fridge (sic) claims that it has learned from an "inside source at Universal" that both the 'Back to the Future' and 'Jurassic Park' trilogies will be released on Blu-ray in October or November of next year. Of course, this is totally unofficial.

Slim PS3 Reviewed as a BD Player

Tech site Engadget and AV site Home Cinema Choice have just published two reviews of the slim PS3, including its performance as a Blu-ray player. One of the reviews' findings is that the new PS3 is slightly slower when loading a Blu-ray disc. On the other hand, improvements such as reduced power consumption and lower noise are confirmed.

Anchor Bay Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the comedy 'Stan Helsing' to Blu-ray on October 27th, day-and-date with the DVD release. A spoof on the film 'Van Helsing' and horror films in general, video will be presented in 1.85:1 1080p AVC accompanied by a 5.1 PCM soundtrack.

BD Sales Information: August 17-23 (Update)

'Hannah Montana: the Movie' was the top-selling title on Blu-ray during the week ended August 23, according to data from Nielsen VideoScan First Alert. Disney's tween phenomenon sold 50 percent more BD units than the second title in the charts, Universal's horror remake 'The Last House on the Left'. Update: top 10 and sales figures added.

Terminator Salvation Blu-ray Will Get R-rated Cut

The Blu-ray release of 'Terminator Salvation' hasn't been officially announced, but the latest bulletin of the Motion Pictures Association of America includes among the film it has rated a new version of 'Terminator Salvation', which is rated R "for some violence and brief nudity".

Heat, Logan's Run, Negotiator Delayed One Week

Warner Home Video has announced that three of the catalog titles it had announced on Blu-ray for November 3 –'Heat', 'Logan's Run' and 'The Negotiator'- have been delayed a week and thus will be released on November 10. On the other hand, 'North by Northwest' isn't delayed and is still scheduled for November 3. Release details are unchanged.

PS3 Slim Teardown Reveals Universal PSU

Tech site iFixit has posted a detailed teardown of the new PS3 Slim, with some interesting findings, including the confirmation that, like the original model, the slim PS3 will have a universal power supply unit. Officially, PS3s only support the voltage for the territory they are sold in (110V in the US, 240V in the UK, etc.). However, they are actually designed to accept all common AC voltages worldwide.

Darwin's Darkest Hour for November

National Geographic, in conjunction with Warner Home Video, has announced the Blu-ray release of 'Darwin's Darkest Hour' for November 17, day-and-date with the DVD. This biographical feature depicts the professional and personal trauma Charles Darwin endured the year before the publication of On the Origin of Species. It will also air on PBS on October 6.

ITV DVD has announced four movies for release on Blu-ray in the UK on October 12: Alfred Hitchcock's 'The 39 Steps', Laurence Olivier's 'Henry V' and 'Hamlet', and the 1979 TV adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque's 'All Quiet on the Western Front'. Analyst Predicts Slow Growth for Blu-ray in the PC

According to a report issued by analyst firm iSuppli Corp., Blu-ray drives in PCs will only hit 16.3% penetration by 2013, up from 3.6% in 2009. The main reasons given for such a slow growth are the cost and scarcity of content, and the domination of DVD writers as the prime storage medium for computers.

Deal Alert: Lost Seasons 1-5 for $144.99

Amazon's "Buy More Lost on Blu-ray, Save More" special offer expired weeks ago, but the etailer is determined not to leave anybody without its dose of that hit TV show. Just today, 'Lost: The Complete Seasons 1-5' dropped in price to $144.99, or just about $29 per season. Nobody knows how long that price will stick, so if you are at all interested, you should act fast.

Today on Blu-ray - August 25th

For the most part, August has been quiet in terms of must-have Blu-ray releases. In this last week of August, that trend continues, but looking over the horizon we see the release of several blockbuster titles, including next week's release of 'Braveheart' and 'Gladiator'. Combine that with the release of PS3 Slim at the new $299 price point, and its going to be a month to remember for Blu-ray. With that said, we still have a few titles coming out today that are worth a look.

Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Grace Out Now, Exclusively at Best Buy

Best Buy continues to secure timed exclusives on Blu-ray. Universal's 'Shaun of the Dead' and 'Hot Fuzz' (officially slated for release on September 22) and Anchor Bay's 'Grace' (announced for September 15) are already available to purchase at that retailer, online or via store pickup. Neither the studios involved nor Best Buy, Co., Inc. have made any announcement or public statement in that connection.

Rocky Collection Coming to Blu-ray (Update)

In an early announcement to retailers, it has been revealed that MGM Home Entertainment is set to release the Blu-ray compilation 'Rocky: The Undisputed Collection', which includes all six 'Rocky' movies, on November 3. At the moment, there are no official release details, other than it will be a seven-disc set. Update: tentative bonus features added.

The Hangover Blu-ray Announced in the UK

The UK branch of Warner Home Video has announced that it will release the hit comedy 'The Hangover' on Blu-ray on December 7, day-and-date with the DVD. It will be presented in 2.40:1 1080p VC-1, with a 5.1 Dolby TrueHD track. The BD will exclusively include a 107-minute extended unrated cut of the movie (as well as the theatrical cut), and a digital copy.
