Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Vivendi Buys Genius Home Entertainment Distribution

Vivendi Entertainment, a division of Universal Music Group Distribution, is taking over the core home entertainment distribution operations of Genius Products. As a result of the deal, the financial terms of which were not disclosed, Vivendi's catalog is expected to grow 200% to more than 3,000 titles.

Yes, you read that right – we didn't miss a decimal point or typed a dollar sign instead of the yen. Extreme-high-end electronics manufacturer Goldmund has presented its Eidos Reference Blue BD player with a price of $135,000. Build quality is jaw-dropping: the heavily damped, brass-and-aluminum mechanism weighs 66 pounds and is suspended by four spring-loaded legs on its own dedicated table.

Marilyn Manson Blu-ray Coming Up

Eagle Rock Entertainment is releasing 'Marilyn Manson: Guns, God and Government - Live in L.A.' on Blu-ray on November 17. When originally released on DVD in 2002, the visual footage of this title was taken from numerous concerts around the world during the tour, set to the audio soundtrack from the Los Angeles show. Now for the first time, this Blu-ray presents the original high definition L.A. footage and soundtrack together as a cohesive concert film.

Panasonic Blu-ray Players to Support DivX Plus HD

Panasonic has entered a license agreement with DivX Inc. to incorporate DivX Plus HD technology into its UniPhier semiconductor chips, featured in Panasonic's Blu-ray players, which will then be able to playback DivX Plus HD H.264 video in the MKV container at high-definition resolutions up to 1080p.

Versus Slashes Its Way to High-def

In an early announcement to retailers, it has been revealed that Tokyo Shock is set to release the action/horror Japanese cult film 'Versus' on Blu-ray on December 29. No release details are available, other than it will be a three-disc set. This gives reason to believe the BD may contain the recut of the movie featured in the 'Ultimate Versus' DVD.

NAD Introduces Flagship Blu-ray Player

At CEDIA, NAD Electronics showed its new flagship player, model M56. It supports 1080p video, advanced audio codecs (decoded onboard or bitstreamed), and BD-Live. Build quality has received special attention, with extensive shielding, a thick steel chassis and die-cast aluminum front panels. It is available now at a suggested price of $1,999.

Four Christmases Blu-ray Announced

Warner Home Video, in conjunction with New Line Home Entertainment, has announced the Blu-ray release of the Yuletide comedy 'Four Christmases' for November 24, day-and-date with the DVD. The Blu-ray will include a digital copy and "45 minutes of hilarious bonus content", some of it only available through BD-Live.

The Ugly Truth Announced for Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced the Blu-ray release of 'The Ugly Truth' on November 10, day-and-date with the DVD. 'The Ugly Truth' is a romantic comedy about a romantically-challenged morning show producer (Katherine Heigl, '27 Dresses') who is reluctantly embroiled in a series of outrageous tests by her chauvinistic correspondent (Gerard Butler, 'P.S. I Love You') to prove his theories on relationships and help her find love.

Sharp Readies BD-100 Blu-ray Laser

At the 70th Autumn Meeting of the Japan Society of Applied Physics being held this week, Sharp announced that they have successfully created a Blu-ray laser diode which operates at a maximum of 500mW, enough to burn four-layer Blu-ray discs. This would allow for, when approved by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), Blu-ray discs with either 75GB or 100GB capacities.

Disney and Panasonic Team for Blu-ray Promotion

Once again, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment will team up with Panasonic to educate consumers about Blu-ray in conjunction with the Blu-ray release of 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs'. The commercial will tout the advantage of Blu-ray, including better picture and scratch-resistant coating.

Yamaha Announces Two Blu-ray Players

Yamaha has announced two new Blu-ray players, models BD-S1065 and BD-S1900. Both players support BD-Live and advanced audio codecs, and feature multichannel analog audio outputs. The BD-S1900 adds RS-232C, Pure Direct mode for high-quality CD playback, an aluminum front panel and gold-plated terminals. MSRP is $599.95 for the BD-S1065 and $699.95BD-S1900

Sherwood Announces Sub-$200 BD Player with Multichannel Analog Outs

Sherwood America Inc. has announced the release of their latest Blu-ray player, the BDP-5004. It has an MSRP of $199.95 and will be available in October. Apart from the already-common features (HDMI 1.3, 1080p video, advanced audio decoding, BD-Live), it will feature 5.1 analog audio outputs for playback of high-resolution surround material through receivers lacking HDMI inputs.

Blu-ray Managed Copy Demoed at CEDIA

Pioneer is demoing the Blu-ray managed copy process at CEDIA, and EngadgetHD has already a nice video showing how it would be done on a compatible player, using a demo disc of the Disney movie 'Bolt.' To authorise the managed copy, one must access the online store of the studio, which also sets the price for the managed copy. The copy itself was done in about 4x real time (dependent on the drive's speed).

Yet Another Blu-ray Player with Netflix, Now from Sharp

At CEDIA, Sharp announced its new Blu-ray player, model BD-HP52U. This BD-Live compatible player will receive support for instant watching of Netflix content in November, when Sharp and the movie rental giant expect to finalize the contract they are working on. The BD-HP52U will have an MSRP of $380.

JVC Announces Pair of Blu-ray Recorders

JVC will introduce its new SR-HD1500 and SR-HD1250 Blu-ray disc and HDD recorders at CEDIA. These units feature a built-in Blu-ray recorder and an internal hard disk drive for duplication and disc authoring without a PC (although recording of television content is not possible). MSRP is $2,550 for the SR-HD1500 and $1,995 for the SR-HD1250. Availability is set for October.

LaserPacific Mastering Minority Report in 4K, Blu-ray Coming in 2010

LaserPacific Media Corporation, a Los Angeles post production company, has built a new end-to-end 4K workflow for mastering and re-mastering feature films. The company is currently preparing a "true and complete 4K master" of the Steven Spielberg film 'Minority Report' for Paramount Pictures and 20th Century Fox for release on Blu-ray next year.

Rocky Collection Announced for UK

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring 'Rocky: The Undisputed Collection' to Blu-ray in the UK on October 26th. This seven-disc set will feature all six Rocky films in 1080p AVC video and with 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks.

Smallville: Season 8 Announced for UK Blu-ray Release

Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring 'Smallville: Season 8' to Blu-ray in the UK on October 12th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Technical specs have not been announced at this time, though you can expect to see a 1080p VC-1 video and 5.1 Dolby Digital audio presentation, similar to the US release.

BD Sales Information: August 31-September 6

The two first titles in Paramount's Sapphire Series, 'Gladiator' and 'Braveheart', comfortably took the two top spots in the Blu-ray sales chart for the week ended September 6, according to Nielsen VideoScan First Alert. The number one in overall packaged-media sales, 'State of Play', only got to fourth place on BD, behind 'Earth'. The top-selling movie of last week, 'Fighting', evaporated to twelfth place.

Sony has announced its "networked" Blu-ray player, number BDP-N460. This BD-Live model streams video from the Bravia Internet Video platform instantly, including content from YouTube, Slacker, and Netflix (support for Netflix access will be added later this fall). It will be available in October for about $250.

Anchor Bay Announces UFC 100 Blu-ray

Anchor Bay Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the pay-per-view event 'UFC 100: Making History' to Blu-ray on October 20th, day-and-date with the DVD release. No technical specs have been announced at this time, but we do know that the disc will feature 360 minutes of footage including Lesnar vs. Mir and St-Pierre vs. Alves.

Aliens in the Attic Blu-ray Announced

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced that it will release the family film 'Aliens in the Attic' on Blu-ray on November 3, day-and-date with the DVD. It will be presented in 1.85:1 1080p AVC, with a DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. The Blu-ray release will also include the movie on DVD and digital copy.

Terminator Salvation Blu-ray Announced for December

Warner Home Video has announced that it will release 'Terminator Salvation' on Blu-ray on December 1, day-and-date with the DVD. As we told you in August, both the theatrical, PG-13 cut and the director's R-rated cut will be included (not via seamless branching, but on separate discs). A digital copy of the theatrical version will also be included.

Delay for The Lord of the Rings Blu-ray Confirmed

Two days ago we broke the news, and now it is confirmed: the Blu-ray release of 'The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy' is delayed to 2010. Studio and industry sources have informed our friends at The Digital Bits that the BD trilogy is no longer on the 2009 schedule, and is now tentatively slated for early 2010 (probably March).

Optimum Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the film 'Jack Said' to Blu-ray on October 5th to the UK, day-and-date with the DVD release. The film, which premiers theatrically on September 25th exclusively at Apollo Haymarket, will be presented in 1080p video accompanied by a Dolby Digital soundtrack.

The Green Berets Announced for January

Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring the John Wayne film 'The Green Berets' to Blu-ray on January 5th, 2010. Video will be presented in 2.40:1 1080p VC-1 accompanied by a 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtrack. The only special feature is a featurette called "The Filmmakers: The Making of The Green Berets".

The most disappointing aspect of Darren Aronofsky's film ‘Requiem for a Dream' is that for some viewers, the story's extreme visuals will be overwhelming, and cause them to either turn it off or tune it out. It is a brutally honest and emotionally intensive film that pulls no punches while delivering two stories of self- degradation through addiction. Still, it represents one of the finer films ever made and is at the top of the list for today's Blu-ray releases.

Blu-ray Gets Marketing Push in the UK

The British Video Association (BVA) is launching a £1 million ($1.6 million) campaign aimed at educating consumers about the benefits of the Blu-ray and its releases ahead of the holiday season. The campaign is supported by Sony, Fox, Universal, Disney and Warner, and aimed at HD-ready TV users, PS3 Owners and satellite HDTV subscribers.
