Blu-ray Sales, Jan. 25-31: Jackson is King of Blu (Update)

Michael Jackson's This is It was easily the top-selling title on Blu-ray in the week ended January 31, according to Nielsen VideoScan, outselling second-ranking Surrogates by a rate of more than 3 to 1. The other major sales news was that a record 58% of the copies sold of the documentary WWII in HD came from its Blu-ray release.

The department research of Home Media Magazine estimates that total disc sales of This Is It are about 1.2 million units (BD and DVD combined).

Blu-ray sales percentage The BD market share record for a new theatrical release still belongs to Terminator: Salvation, with 42%.

The 21% market share for This Is It is also a noticeable improvement from other music titles. Back in August 2008, Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert had obtained only 4% of its sales from BD. In June 2009, The Jonas Brothers: The 3-D Concert Experience had a BD market share of 11%.

Overall, BD sales revenue was $21.16 million, up 106.09% from the same week last year.

Packaged-media sales revenue was $188.16 million, up 13.34% year-on-year. Blu-ray accounted for 11.2% of that revenue.
