Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Anytime you hear the words "bachelor party" and "Las Vegas" in the same sentence, you know that something crazy is about to unfold. A countless number of Hollywood films and trashy daytime talk shows have told the tales of things gone wrong when bachelor (or bachelorette) parties get out of the control. Add in Las Vegas, a city that hasn't been in control since the mob moved in, and you typically get a collection of hilarious misadventures and wrongdoings. Director Todd Phillips used that concept to capture what can only be described as one of the funniest things-gone-wrong adventures to ever hit theaters. After a record-breaking theatrical run, Warner Brothers today releases 'The Hangover' on Blu-ray.

Fritz Lang's M Blu-ray in February

'M', Fritz Lang's first sound film and an undisputed classic (as well as a seminal work in the serial-killer subgenre), will be released in the UK by Eureka Entertainment on February 22, 2010 as part of its "Masters of Cinema" collection. This edition will be presented in its correct 1.19:1 aspect ratio, with restored sound, and will also include the recently-rediscovered 1932 British release version of the movie.

Tai Seng Announces Rebellion Blu-ray

Tai Seng Entertainment has announced 'Rebellion' for release on Blu-ray on January 26, 2010. This film, centered around a war between triad gangs in Hong Kong, will be presented in 1080p video with 5.1 Dolby Digital tracks in Cantonese and Mandarin, and English and Chinese subtitles. Extras will consist of a making-of documentary and the trailer.

Capitalism: A Love Story Blu-ray Gets Detailed

Anchor Bay Home Entertainment has announced the technical specs and special features for the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Capitalism: A Love Story', which is scheduled to be released on March 9th. For this Michael Moore documentary, video will be presented in 1080p AVC accompanied by a 7.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtrack.

No Blu-ray for The Prisoner Remake

As previously reported, Warner Home Video's strategy regarding TV on BD is “focused on releasing TV shows that can best showcase the superior picture quality of Blu-ray”. Evidently, the new miniseries 'The Prisoner', recently aired on AMC, didn't pass the eye-candy test, as the studio just announced it on standard-definition disc but not Blu-ray.

The House of the Devil Gets Blu-ray

MPI Media Group has announced 'The House of the Devil' for Blu-ray release on February 2, 2010. This haunted house/demonic horror movie premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and had a limited theatrical release on October 30. It received a 87% "fresh" rating at RottenTomatoes.

Give 'em Hell Malone Blu-ray Announced

National Entertainment Media has announced and detailed 'Give 'em Hell Malone', which will be released on Blu-ray on January 26, 2010. This neo-noir thriller, directed by Russell Mulcahy and starring Thomas Jane, will be presented in 1.78:1 video with a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio Soundtrack. Special features will consist of interviews with actors Thomas Jane, Elsa Pataky and Doug Hutchinson.

Hachi: A Dog's Tale Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced a movie for Blu-ray before it even opens in theaters: 'Hachi: A Dog's Tale', in theaters from December 18, is set for Blu-ray release on March 9, 2010. This family drama about a college professor who takes in an abandoned dog, is a remake of a Japanese movie from 1987. It was directed by Lasse Hallström and stars Richard Gere.

Season 13 of South Park Heading to Blu-ray

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring 'South Park: The Complete Thirteenth Season' to Blu-ray on February 2nd. This three-disc set will feature all 14 episodes from the season uncensored. Technical specs have not been announced at this time, though the Blu-ray release of 'South Park: The Complete Twelfth Season' featured a 1080i AVC video and Dolby TrueHD soundtrack presentation.

Peter Jackson Restoring His Early Films for Blu-ray

In a recent interview for Reel Time (a programme on the CineMagic XM radio channel), Peter Jackson said he is currently restoring his "early films" for release on Blu-ray. No specific titles were mentioned, but Jackson was probably referring to his three first movies, which have become cult favorites in their own right: 'Bad Taste', 'Meet the Feebles' and 'Braindead' (also known as 'Dead Alive').

The Lord of the Rings Blu-ray Set for April (Update)

New Line Home Entertainment, in conjunction with Warner Home Video, will release 'The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy' on Blu-ray on April 6, 2010. Release details are largely unchanged from those revealed early in the year. The nine-disc box set will contain the theatrical versions of the movies, along with more than seven hours of special features (on three regular DVDs), digital copies for each film, and previews for the extended versions of the films (which will come out on Blu-ray "at a later date"). The price history for this title shows that this is the lowest it has been since February 2009 (although it was also heavily discounted in July-August).

Toy Story 1 and 2 Get Blu-ray Dates

Confirming earlier reports, retailers are now displaying a release date for Disney/Pixar's 'Toy Story 1' and 'Toy Story 2', along with cover images (possibly temporary) and some release details. Both titles will reportedly come out on March 23, 2010, in combo backs which will include the DVD and the Blu-ray of the respective movie.

Red Cliff Blu-ray in March

In an early announcement to retailers, it has been revealed that Magnolia Home Entertainment will release John Woo's epic movie 'Red Cliff' on Blu-ray on March 30, 2010. This two-disc edition will include the 288-minute "international version", whereas the version of the film that was shown in the United States was a truncated two and a half hours. Other disc details are still unknown.

Kino Merges with Lorber; Metropolis Blu-ray in 2010

In an announcement for the merger between Lorber HT Digital and Kino International, it was revealed that Kino is planning to release the recently restored version of Fritz Lang's legendary silent film 'Metropolis' in theaters next year, followed by a Blu-ray release. No word on a release date, but the film is currently scheduled to be revealed at the Classic Film Festival in April.

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced the technical specs and special features for the upcoming Blu-ray releases of 'The Last King of Scotland', 'To Live and Die in L.A.', and 'Walk the Line', which are all scheduled to be released on February 2nd. Rumor: Doctor Zhivago Anniversary Edition Blu-ray in DigiBook

Warner Home Video is expected to release David Lean's 'Doctor Zhivago' on Blu-ray in 2010. The title is still not announced or available for preorder, but retailers already have put up cover art which denotes that, when this title does come out, it will be an "Anniversary Edition" (probably 45th) and will come in a DigiBook.

Alien Blu-ray to Feature Sigourney Weaver Commentary

During an interview for the Los Angeles Times to promote the theatrical release of 'Avatar', actress Sigourney Weaver (who plays a botanist in James Cameron's movie) discussed all her movie career and her status as "queen of sci-fi". She also revealed that in the weeks to come, she will record a commentary for the upcoming Blu-ray release of the 'Alien' tetralogy.

HBO Launches Blu-ray TV Ad Campaign

HBO has launched its first TV campaign dedicated entirely to Blu-ray Disc. This campaign, with the tagline “Unleash HBO on Blu-ray”, will run through Christmas on “male-centric shows and networks”, and aims to promote the studio's Blu-ray library to consumers who buy or receive BD players during the holidays.

Blu-ray Sales, November 30-December 6: Terminator Demolishes Museum (Update)

'Terminator Salvation' was the clear winner in the Blu-ray sales race last week, according to Nielsen VideoScan First Alert. McG's postapocalyptic actioner sold nearly three times as many BD copies as the other major new release of the week, 'Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian', and set a new BD market share record for a new release. NPD: Blu-ray Player Sales Up 53% in Black Friday Week

During Black Friday week, Blu-ray players were among the hottest consumer technology items. The NPD Group has reported that BD player sales volume surged by 53% from the same period in 2008, surpassed only by computers (up 63%) and camcorders (55%). No information of revenue or average player price was given at this point.

CES 2010: NVIDIA to Demonstrate 3-D Tech for Blu-ray

Shortly after AMD announced that it would demonstrate 3-D technology at CES, competitor NVIDIA (in partnership with Arcsoft, Corel, Cyberlink, and Sonic), announced a 3-D Blu-ray playback solution for the PC, using content encoded with AVC Multi-View Codec (or AVC-MVC), the codec that is expected to become the foundation for how 3-D content is encoded onto Blu-ray discs when the 3-D spec is officially adopted.

Stardust Blu-ray in UK and Germany

The UK and Germany branches of Paramount Home Entertainment are releasing the fantasy movie 'Stardust' on Blu-ray, respectively on February 1 and February 4, 2010. 'Stardust', based on a novel by Neil Gaiman and starring Claire Danes, Michelle Pfeiffer and Robert DeNiro, is one of the two last Paramount titles released on HD DVD still awaiting a BD release.
