Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

James Cameron Talks Avatar Blu-ray Plans

In the interviews given to promote 'Avatar', which opens in theaters today, James Cameron has already given a few tips on the Blu-ray of his latest movie epic. The filmmaker said that the BD will include over ten minutes of deleted scenes, and also that the initial Blu-ray release of 'Avatar' "probably won't be in 3-D", and there will be another edition with 3-D support in late 2010.

The set will feature the upcoming Blu-ray release of the film (also being released on December 22nd) and a Family Guy t-shirt housed in a Lucas-approved Family Guy lunchbox modeled after the original 'Return of the Jedi' lunchbox from the 1980's.

Image Entertainment May File for Chapter 11

Image Entertainment said it may have to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection after defaulting on a $4m payment on a senior secured note that was due on December 14. “The company does not currently have the funds, or access the funds, necessary to repay all of its outstanding obligations to the Holder, Wachovia, Arvato and its other creditors,” said Image Entertainment in a statement. Image also said it was “exploring strategic alternatives”.

The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) today announced the finalization and release of the "Blu-ray 3D™" specification. It leverages the technical advantages of the BD format to deliver "unmatched picture quality" as well as uniformity and compatibility across the full range of Blu-ray 3D products, both hardware and software. The specification is also designed to allow the PS3 to play back Blu-ray 3D content in 3-D.

BBC Home Entertainment, in conjunction with Warner Home Video, has announced two titles for release on Blu-ray on April 6, 2010: 'Sharpe's Challenge' and 'Sharpe's Peril', based on two books from a series of adventure novels set around the time of the Napoleonic wars and starring Sean Bean. They had been already released in the UK in April 2009.

National Geographic Distribution Goes to Vivendi

Vivendi Entertainment has entered an agreement to exclusively distribute National Geographic TV product in North America. The exclusive multiyear deal gives Vivendi the rights to distribute product from National Geographic Channel and PBS. Up to now, National Geographic titles had been distributed by Warner Home Video.

Warner's 'Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince' easily won the week for Blu-ray Sales during the week ended December 13, according to Nielsen VideoScan. Universal's 'Public Enemies' got second place. The other major new theatrical release of the week, Sony's 'Julie & Julia', only managed number 10 of the charts. Warner Home Video has announced that, beginning in the first quarter of 2010, it will be releasing its entire theatrical new release slate as Blu-ray combo packs, containing a Blu-ray Disc, a standard-definition DVD and a Digital Copy of the film. Other studios had been including DVDs with new Blu-ray releases before, but only on select titles.

Beginning February 23, Warner Home Video is launching a line of Blu-ray double features consisting of "a pair of well-matched catalog hits spanning multiple genres" and aggressively priced at $24.98 (SRP). The first wave will include: 'Dirty Harry/Magnum Force'; 'Analyze This/Analyze That'; 'Presumed Innocent/Frantic'; 'Miss Congeniality/Miss Congeniality 2'; and 'Grumpy Old Men/Grumpier Old Men'.

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring 'The Stoning of Soraya M.' to Blu-ray on March 9th. From the producers of 'The Passion of the Christ', this film tells the true story of an Iranian woman who refused to get a divorce so her husband could marry a younger woman, and was stoned under false accusations of adultery.

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Syfy miniseries 'Alice' to Blu-ray on March 2nd to coincide with the theatrical release of Tim Burton's 'Alice in Wonderland'. Technicolor and Testronic Labs Team for Blu-ray Testing

Technicolor Business Group (a leader in Blu-ray Disc authoring and replication) and Testronic Labs (a prominent Blu-ray Disc testing center) have announced that they have partnered to offer comprehensive Blu-ray Disc testing services. The companies hope that by combining their service the time required to get a Blu-ray Disc into production will be significantly reduced.

Blockbuster to Mail Out-of-Stock Movies to Store Customers

Blockbuster Inc. today launched Blockbuster Direct Access, a new service that gives store customers access to the "more than 95,000 titles" carried in the company's distribution centers. If a title is out of stock or not carried in an individual participating store, staff can search available inventory at nearby distribution centers and arrange for that title to be mailed directly to the customer, usually within three postal days. Customers do not have to be subscribers of Blockbuster Online to use the service.

Connected Blu-ray Players to Supplant Set-top Boxes

New research from The Diffusion Group indicates the market for Web-based set-top devices will represent just 3% of all Web-enabled CE devices purchased over the next five years. Eureka Entertainment's Masters of Cinema series has been chosen as the ‘Label of the Year' in the latest February 2010 edition of the British AV magazine Home Cinema Choice. Semiconductor maker Broadcom Corporation announced today the first "true single-die" Blu-ray Disc chip: The BCM7630 combines optical front-end and back-end video decoding and display technologies in a single-die solution. It also supports Netflix 2.0, Pandora Internet Radio, Vudu and CinemaNow movie services and other streaming applications, as well as Wi-Fi and BlueTooth. Also announced today is the BCM7632, which adds support for the playback of 3-D Blu-ray movies in stereoscopic full 1080p.

Just as quietly as it was –repeatedly– delayed, the Blu-ray edition of 'Highlander: Season 1' is suddenly available to buy at the Legendary Heroes website. TV Shows on DVD is reporting that Davis-Panzer is already working on seasons 2 and 3 of the series, which will be released simultaneously in Spring 2010 and will be "loaded with extras."

The Criterion Collection has announced that it will release Terrence Malick's 'Days of Heaven' on Blu-ray on March 23, 2010. Criterion Announces Two Kurosawa Films on Blu-ray (Update)

The Criterion Collection has announced that, to celebrate the centenary of the birth of Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa, it will release two of his films on Blu-ray on March 23: 'Yojimbo' and 'Sanjuro', starring Toshiro Mifune as a samurai-for-hire. Netflix is giving two free Newman's Own frozen pizzas for customers of certain US retailers who sign up for Netflix, confirmed Netflix spokesman Steve Swasey to Video Business. Swasey admitted that such a promotion tied to a consumer product was uncommon for Netflix, but said that if it was successful, the company might consider "expansion or similar programs with brands that complement Netflix."

Eureka Entertainment has announced another title for its Masters of Cinema series: F.W. Murnau's 'City Girl' will come out on Blu-ray only on February 22, 2010. This simple love story that Murnau directed after the ambitious 'Sunrise' features a restored high-definition transfer of the silent version by 20th Century Fox, and a new score, composed and arranged in 2008 by Christopher Caliendo.
