Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

BDA Announces Additional Format Enhancements

The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) today announced two new media specifications that use Blu-ray Disc technology to provide targeted functionality for commercial and consumer applications. The specifications for BDXL™ (High Capacity Recordable and Rewritable discs) and IH-BD (Intra-Hybrid discs) are expected in the next few months.

This Saturday, Amazon has an interesting Blu-ray related deal of the day: up to midnight PST, you can order the Rambo 1-3 Box Set on Blu-ray (consisting of First Blood, Rambo: First Blood Part II and Rambo III) for only $21.99 (56% off MSRP). This works out to under $7.5 per Rambo movie. Note that the fourth movie, Rambo, is not included in this box set. Update: this deal is expired now.

Avatar Blu-ray TV Spot Goes Online

"Open your eyes – and return – to Pandora." This is the slogan that has been used used on the new spot to specifically promote the upcoming Blu-ray release of James Cameron's Avatar, due out on April 22. The spot focuses on the majestically alien imagery of Pandora and its wildlife. It can be viewed at a resolution of up to 1080p, thus providing an appetizer of what the Blu-ray will have to offer.

Drawn Together Movie Blu-ray Best Buy Exclusive

On April 20, Paramount Home Entertainment will release The Drawn Together Movie: The Movie! on Blu-ray, featuring the characters from the Comedy Central series Drawn Together, which had been cancelled in 2008 after its third season. Initially, this will be available exclusively at Best Buy. The Blu-ray release includes over an hour of bonus features.

Man with No Name Trilogy on Blu-ray in June

Joining in the celebration of "Eastwood month", 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, in conjunction with MGM, will release
on Blu-ray on June 1. This collection consists of the three westerns starring Eastwood and directed by Sergio Leone: A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (the last one of which had already been released on Blu-ray in May 2009). -
Elvis on Tour Blu-ray in August

Warner Home Video has announced the Blu-ray release of Elvis on Tour, the Golden Globe-winning documentary that followed Elvis Presley on a 15-city tour of the United States in 1972, for August 3. Video has been remastered in high definition with 2.40:1 letterboxed image, as seen in the theatrical release. Audio will be 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio.

Blu-ray Sales, March 22-28: Big Toy Sale (Update)

The Blu-ray release of Pixar's first feature movie, Toy Story, and its sequel Toy Story 2, got first and third place respectively in the Blu-ray sales chart for the week ending March 28, according to Nielsen VideoScan First Alert. The Oscar-winning drama The Blind Side, which was the top-seller on packaged media overall, came in a close second. Update: sales figures added.

Institute Benjamenta Blu-ray Announced and Detailed

The British Film Institute has announced Institute Benjamenta, or This Dream People Call Human Life for release on May 17, in the BFI's new Dual Format Edition package (containing both a Blu-ray and DVD disc). Audio will be presented in DTS-HD Master Audio. Institute Benjamenta is the first live-action feature from renowned animators, The Quay Brothers.

Ichi the Killer Blu-ray Shipping Now

This is not a joke. The Blu-ray release of Takashi Miike's Ichi the Killer from Tokyo Shock/Media Blasters, first announced in December 2008 but delayed on several occasions, and technically released on February 23 but never physically available, appears now as in stock on Amazon.com. Indeed, many forum members report that they are getting shipping notices.

From Paris with Love Announced on Blu-ray

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has announced From Paris with Love on Blu-ray for June 8. This action movie, starring John Travolta and Jonathan Rhys Meyers, directed by Pierre Morel and co-written and co-produced by Luc Besson, aimed to repeat the unexpected success of Taken, but critical and commercial response to the film was not nearly as positive. A digital copy of the movie will be included.

WB Blu-ray Double Features in July

Warner Home Video has announced five more catalog Blu-ray double features for release on July 6: Dr. Giggles / Otis; Funny Farm / Spies Like Us (previously available as a Best Buy Exclusive); The Getaway (1972) / The Getaway (1994); The Last Boy Scout / Last Man Standing; and Practical Magic / The Witches of Eastwick. Note that Otis and The Getaway (1972) are already available separately.

U2 360° at the Rose Bowl Blu-ray Announced

U2 has announced its first concert on Blu-ray (if we don't count the U2: Rattle and Hum movie): U2: 360° at the Rose Bowl will be released on BD by Interscope Records on June 3. The Rose Bowl performance was the penultimate gig of last year's U2360 tour in support of their album No Line on The Horizon and was shot entirely in HD with 27 cameras. The BD will exclusively offer video footage from the forthcoming 2010 US and European Tours, which will be continually updated via BD-Live.

Death Race 2000 Blu-ray Detailed

Shout! Factory has released the edition details for Death Race 2000, which will come out on Blu-ray on June 22. This movie, the biggest box office hit for a Roger Corman production, is set in a world where the biggest entertainment is the three-day Transcontinental Death Race, whose winner is the driver who racks up the most points by killing innocent bystanders. The Blu-ray has been transferred from the interpositive film element.

While Sherlock Holmes – out today on Blu-ray – isn't a perfect representation of the fictional detective who became so popular in the late 1800's, it is closer than many would expect. He may not have been as suave as Guy Ritchie's updated character, but the original Holmes was an active brawler and admitted user of both tobacco and cocaine. With help from yet another memorable performance by Robert Downey Jr., Sherlock Holmes went on to achieve moderate success and added another chapter to the detective's already impressive library.

Wolfman Unrated Director’s Cut Blu-ray Announced

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced The Wolfman, the re-imagining of the classic monster thriller, starring Benicio Del Toro and Anthony Hopkins, for Blu-ray release on June 1. The BD will include a never-before-seen 119-minute unrated version of the movie, as well as the version seen in theaters. Also included will be two alternate endings (BD-exclusive).

When in Rome Announced on Blu-ray

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has announced that it will release When in Rome on June 15. Unlike other Disney releases, this BD release will not come with a DVD or digital copy of the movie. This romantic comedy stars Kristen Bell as a young New Yorker who, while on a trip to Rome, takes coins from a fountain of love – and ignites the passion of a group of unlikely suitors.

Universal Launches Blu-ray Value Packs

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced that on May 11, it will release nine Blu-ray value packs, priced at $34.98 MSRP. Each of them contains two catalog movies, bundled by genre. Unlike other recent double features on Blu-ray, these packs contain the movies in separate cases, held together side by side (or back to back) with what is known in the industry as a "belly band."

Sherlock Holmes Blu-ray Live Community Screening

Today, Warner Home Video releases Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes. On April 1 at 9 p.m. EST (6 p.m. PST), a live community BD screening with Robert Downey Jr. will take place. BD owners will be able to watch the movie, enter their questions and hear the star of the movie answer them.

Warner Home Video has announced Valentine's Day for release on May 18. This romantic movie from New Line with a huge ensemble cast opened in February and was a box office hit, grossing nearly $110 million domestically. The Blu-ray will include "over 40 minutes of exclusive extras", including a sneak peek trailer for Sex and the City 2.

The Stranger, Rampage Greatest Hits on Blu-ray in June

Starz/Anchor Bay has announced two fight-related titles for release on Blu-ray in June. On June 1, the studio will release the direct-to-video revenge movie The Stranger, starring Steve Austin; one week later, it will release the fight compilation UFC: Rampage Greatest Hits, which offers the best eight fights in the career of Quinton "Rampage" Jackson.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon Blu-ray Available Now

The Ang Lee martial arts film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is now available to buy separately. Until now, it was only available in the US as part of a three-movie pack, released in July 2009, which also included The Curse of the Golden Flower and House of Flying Daggers. A separate edition had gone up for preorder early this year, but without a definite street date.

No Shinjuku Incident Blu-ray in the US

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced the Jackie Chan action thriller Shinjuku Incident for home video. However, no Blu-ray version has been announced – only standard-definition DVD. The press release gives no reason for this, nor does it indicate if a Blu-ray edition will be announced in the future.

Spring Blu-ray Sale at Best Buy (Update)

Best Buy is having a lightning spring sale which, at the time of writing, it includes 187 titles, about sixty of them at $9.99 or less, including some titles released relatively recently, such as Starz's Pandorum and several Lionsgate catalogs. Update The $9.99 sale is advertised in BB's weekly flyer, and runs March 29 through April 3, while supplies last. Contrary to information on bestbuy.com, it is also available in stores.

Nolan’s Insomnia Announced on Blu-ray

Warner Home Video has announced the psychological thriller Insomnia for release on Blu-ray on July 13. Insomnia, directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Al Pacino, is a 2002 remake of an identically-titled 1997 Norwegian thriller. The BD will contain movie money good for the theatrical release of Nolan's Inception, due out on July 16.

Not the Messiah Annnounced on Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that, on June 8, it will release Not the Messiah (He's a Very Naughty Boy). This one-night only "comedic oratorio", from the creators of Spamalot, is inspired on Monty Python's Life of Brian and was filmed at London's Royal Albert Hall, with guest appearances by Michael Palin, Terry Jones and Terry Gilliam, to celebrate Monty Python's 40th anniversary.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced Dear John for release on Blu-ray on May 25. This romantic drama, directed by Lasse Halström and based on a novel by Nicholas Sparks, has earned at least a footnote mention in cinema history as the movie that finally knocked the Avatar juggernaut from the top spot at the box office.
