Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has revealed the release details for the Blu-ray edition of Elektra: Director's Cut, which, as previously reported, will hit shelves on May 4. In this Daredevil spinoff starring Jennifer Garner, the titular Marvel heroine comes back to life as the world's most lethal assassin.

The Prisoner Remake Blu-ray Announced in the UK

ITV Studios Home Entertainment has announced that it will release the mini-series The Prisoner on Blu-ray in the UK on May 3. This six-part reinterpretation of the groundbreaking 1967 series stars Jim Caviezel as "Six" and Sir Ian McKellen as "Two." There is no information regarding region coding at the moment.

Four-week Delay for Universal and Fox New Releases at Netflix (Update)

Following the model set by Warner Home Video early this year, Netflix has struck deals with Universal Studios Home Entertainment and 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment covering the distribution of new release DVD and Blu-ray titles from both studios at Netflix. Those will be made available to Netflix members after a 28-day window, giving the studios a dedicated time period for sales.

Tupac Live at the House of Blues Blu-ray Announced

Eagle Rock Entertainment has announced the Blu-ray release of Tupac: Live at the House of Blues on May 25. Filmed in LA, Tupac's final performance before his untimely death two months later showcases hip-hop's poet laureate joined by Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg, K-Ci & JoJo, Outlawz, and Tha Dogg Pound through 118 minutes of hits and collaborations.

Animation Express Blu-ray Announced

Image Entertainment has announced Animation Express for release on Blu-ray on June 8. Animation Express is a compilation of recent auteur animation shorts from the National Film Board of Canada, the world's leading public producer of animated films. The collection features 39 films (13 of them BD-exclusive) from both established and emerging filmmakers, including several award-winning titles.

Where the Wild Things Are UK Blu-ray Announced

The UK branch of Warner Home Video has announced Spike Jonze's Where the Wild Things Are, based on the children's book by Maurice Sendak, for release on Blu-ray on May 10. Disc contents are identical to the US release, including audio and subtitle options, and the addition of a DVD and Digital Copy, in what the studio calls a "Multi-Play Pack."

Sony Announces New Tools for 3D Blu-ray Production

Sony Creative Software today announced two 3D professional applications: Blu-print 6 and Z Depth 3D subtitle. The upgraded Blu-print 6 will be capable of authoring 3D titles in accordance with the BDA's 3D Blu-ray disc specification and enhance workflow capability for production facilities and professional video editors. Z Depth 3D assists editors creating 3D subtitles.

3D Plans for FIFA World Cup Detailed

Following the initial joint announcement to make the world's first FIFA World Cup available in 3D, FIFA and Sony Corporation today detailed its 3D plans, including the schedule of the games captured in 3D, live theatrical 3D viewings, promotional trailers in stores and the release of an official World Cup 3D Blu-ray later this year.

ArcSoft TotalMedia Theatre Receives Blu-ray 3D Certification

Multimedia software provider ArcSoft has announced that ArcSoft TotalMedia Theatre has received Blu-ray 3D certification from the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA). This certification was recently awarded after ArcSoft TotalMedia Theatre passed "rigorous testing" on rigid testing discs encoded with the new 3D standard, Multiview Video Coding (MVC).

2001 Maniacs: Field of Screams Blu-ray in July

Director Tim Sullivan has revealed, via his Facebook page, that 2001 Maniacs: Field of Screams, the sequel to his 2005 movie 2001 Maniacs (itself a remake of a 1964 horror movie by Herschell Gordon Lewis), will be released on Blu-ray by First Look Studios on July 20. There is no information on technical specifications or special features at the moment.

Sherlock Holmes was the top selling title on Blu-ray during the week ended April 4, according to Nielsen VideoScan. Guy Ritchie's reimagining of the world-famous English detective sold nearly three times as many BD copies as number 2, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel (the opposite of overall packaged-media, where the Chipmunks outsold Holmes by 50%). Update: top ten and sales figures added.

BSG The Plan UK Blu-ray Steelbook in May

Universal Playback, a division of Universal Pictures UK, has announced that on May 10 it will release Battlestar Galactica: The Plan on Blu-ray in SteelBook packaging (BD-exclusive), as well as all season sets in separate editions. Disc contents are identical to the US edition.

Columbia Records has officially announced the Blu-ray release of One Night Only: Barbra Streisand and Quartet at The Village Vanguard – September 26, 2009, which will hit store shelves on May 4. This disc covers the entire experience of Ms. Streisand's first cabaret performance in 48 years, coinciding with the release of Love Is the Answer, the artist's album of jazz standards hearkening back to her musical roots in New York cabaret.

Restored Metropolis on Blu-ray in November

Kino International has announced the North American release of the new restoration of Fritz Lang's 1927 science fiction masterpiece Metropolis, now with 25 minutes of lost footage and the original Gottfried Huppertz score. This new 147-minute version will be shown in all major markets throughout the US and Canada. The Blu-ray release is set for November of this year.

Professor Layton Movie Gets Blu-ray Release

Manga Entertainment has announced that it has acquired the rights to Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva, the film reprising the characters from the celebrated Professor Layton puzzle games for the Nintendo DS. The studio plans to release the movie in the UK in September (although the movie might be retitled in the meantime).

Blockbuster Inc. has announced new agreements with Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment LLC and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment Inc. These new agreements, along with the previously-announced agreement with Warner Home Video, will provide day-and-date availability of movies on Blu-ray for Blockbuster's store and by-mail channels.

There are few films that have as big a following or that can create a similar level of anticipation among fans who have weathered numerous rumors and delays for this day to come. A high definition Blu-ray release of The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy has finally arrived today, and there is nothing that can stop my inner-geek from giggling like a pigtailed school girl.

Sonic and Dolby Streamline TrueHD for Blu-ray

Sonic Solutions and Dolby Laboratories today announced that Sonic Solutions has integrated Dolby's professional Dolby TrueHD audio stream editing tools within Scenarist, Sonic's world-standard authoring system for commercial Blu-ray Disc production. This significantly streamlines production by eliminating up to 90 percent of the effort that was previously required to include the high-definition codec in BD titles.

In new proof of the power of a global enthusiast community, a member of a Danish home theater forum has posted advance pictures of the Polish release of the upcoming Alien Anthology Blu-ray box set, including a limited edition with alien-egg packaging. The box set reportedly consists of six discs and its release date is set for the fourth quarter of the year.

Blu-ray Sells over $330m in Q1 2010

According to aggregate weekly estimates from the research department of Home Media Magazine and listed each week on blu-ray.com's sales information posts, revenues from BD sales in the US in the first quarter of 2010 were $331.31 million, 68.5% more than in the same period of 2009. Blu-ray accounted for 12.3% of packaged-media sales revenue in the first three months of the year (versus 7.0% in Jan-Mar 2009).

Eden of the East Movies on Blu-ray in 2011

FUNimation Entertainment has announced that it has acquired the home entertainment, broadcast, digital and merchandise rights to three anime movies which continue the story of the series Eden of the East (original title Higashi no Eden) from Fuji Creative Corporation. FUNimation will release the films on Blu-ray in 2011.
