Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced Game of Death for Blu-ray release on February 15, 2011. In this direct-to-video action thriller (unrelated to the Bruce Lee movie), Wesley Snipes is back as CIA Agent Marcus Jones, a professional hit man caught in a double-cross between his partners in the agency, a ruthless arms dealer and a powerful Wall Street broker worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

Spielberg’s A.I. Blu-ray Announced

Paramount Home Entertainment has officially announced the Dreamworks production A.I. Artificial Intelligence for Blu-ray release in the US on February 15, 2011. This dark science fiction movie with a fairy-tale subtext, a project originally developed by Stanley Kubrick based on a short story by Brian Aldiss, was directed by Steven Spielberg after Kubrick's death.

Heavy Metal Blu-ray Cancelled

Three weeks ago, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment had announced Heavy Metal for Blu-ray release on January 25, 2011. Now the studio has unceremoniously pulled this cult animated movie from its schedule. No reason is given for this cancellation, and no new release date is available.

Amazon's current Blu-ray Boxed Set of the Week is for Night at the Museum Collection (comprised of Night at the Museum and Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian), which can now be had for $18.99 (53% off MSRP, or $9.5 per movie). Secretariat Blu-ray Coming Up

An early announcement to retailers indicates that Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment will release Secretariat on Blu-ray on January 25, 2011, in a BD/DVD combo pack. This family drama about the true story of the race horse who won the Triple Crown in 1973 stars Diane Lane and John Malkovich. It has grossed $57 million at the box office.

Artificial Intelligence is still unannounced in the US; in other countries (especially Germany), it has been announced on several occasions, and delayed just as many times. But according to user reports, this time it is really coming out very soon in several European and Asian countries. Update: Germany and France release dates added.

Two Flipside Blu-ray Titles from BFI in January

BFI Video has announced two new titles for UK release as part of its Flipside label, devoted to rare and little-seen features from the hidden history of British cinema: Private Road and the Duffer/The Moon over the Valley double feature. Both titles will come out on January 17, in two-disc BD/DVD dual-format editions.

The Dorm That Dripped Blood Blu-ray Coming Up

Fangoria is reporting that, on March 8, Synapse Films will release the 1982 slasher movie The Dorm That Dripped Blood, on a Blu-ray/DVD combo, featuring the uncut director's cut. Synapse's Don May, Jr. explained that this version will include "footage that no one has ever seen before", including "additional sequences of both gore and dialogue," restoring the film to "the most complete version possible."

Image Entertainment has announced that on March 22, 2011 it will release Blu-ray editions for three catalog titles from the Sony Pictures Home Entertainment catalog: Against All Odds (Taylor Hackford, 1984); Awakenings (Penny Marshall, 1990); and Random Hearts (Sydney Pollack, 1999).

Blockbuster Announces 3-day in Store Rentals, Tiered Pricing (Update)

Blockbuster Inc. has rolled out new tiered in-store pricing for movies. Renting a "Just arrived" title (less than six weeks in release) will cost $4.99 for three days; "new releases" (in circulation at least six weeks) will go for $2.99 for three days. "Top Picks" (the most frequently rented movies among Blockbuster Rewards members) titles will also cost $2.99 to rent. Update: program clarification added.

Neil Young’s Le Noise Blu-ray Coming Soon

After coming out on CD and vinyl in late September, Neil Young's Le Noise will be released on Blu-ray on December 14, as an Amazon exclusive. This BD will consist of a 39-minute black-and-white film of eight live-in-studio performances of the eight songs that appear on Neil Young's brand-new album Le Noise.

Alice in Wonderland 3D Blu-ray Wide Release

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has announced that on December 7, it will re-release Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland in a four-disc Blu-ray/Blu-ray 3D/DVD/Digital Copy combo pack. This re-imagining of Lewis Carroll's classic had previously been released on two-dimensional Blu-ray in June. The additional (and barebones) 3D disc was previously available exclusively with Sony 3D hardware.

Case 39 Blu-ray Announced

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced Case 39 for Blu-ray release on January 4, 2011. This supernatural thriller, starring Renee Zellweger as a family services social worker assigned to a case that proves to be a nightmare, was initially planned to open in theaters in early 2008, but was repeatedly delayed until finally premiering last October.

The Last Unicorn, Memento 10th Anniversary Blu-ray Announced

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has announced two catalog titles for Blu-ray release on February 22, 2011: the 1982 animated film The Last Unicorn (in a BD/DVD combo pack) and Memento: 10th Anniversary Edition, with an all-new high definition transfer, approved by director Christopher Nolan.

Optimum Home Entertainment has announced Dog Pound for Blu-ray release on January 3, 2011. Tagged as "Scum for the 21st Century," Dog Pound a tough and brutal film set in a young offenders institute for teenage boys that the system doesn't know what to do with. Its long-term inmates have built a rigid power structure based on fear and the guards use the prisoners to let out their own frustrations.

Blu-ray Sales, November 22-28: Expendables Win Black Friday Week (Update)

During the week ended November 28, Lionsgate's action movie The Expendables was the top-selling title on Blu-ray, according to Nielsen VideoScan First Alert. Toy Story 3 bounced back to number 2, while the previous week's number 1, Avatar: Extended Collector's Edition dropped to third place. Update: sales charts and figures added.

Anchor Bay to Release The Walking Dead Blu-ray

AMC and Anchor Bay Entertainment have announced that the home video label will distribute The Walking Dead: Season One on Blu-ray and DVD in the US and Canada. This series, based on the comic book written by Robert Kirkman and published by Image Comics, premiered on AMC on Halloween night and its debut reigns as the biggest series debut in cable's history among adults 18-49 with 4.2 million. Season One consists of six one-hour episodes.

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced Never Let Me Go for Blu-ray release on February 1, 2011. This drama, based on a best-selling novel by Kazuo Ishiguro and directed by Mark Romanek stars Carey Mulligan, Keira Knightley and Andrew Garfield star as three childhood friends who who grow up together at an English boarding school - with a chilling secret. It had a limited theatrical release in September.

Avatar 3D Blu-ray Review

James Cameron's Avatar is by far the top-grossing 3D movie in history, and helped immensely the adoption of stereoscopy in theaters. However, its recently-released Extended Collector's Edition lacked precisely that: a 3D Blu-ray version, as it will only be offered to buyers of Panasonic 3D hardware. Blu-ray.com already has a review of that exclusive edition.

Warner Home Video has announced that it plans to release three major catalog titles on Anniversary Blu-ray editions in 2012: Singin' in the Rain (Stanley Donen/Gene Kelly, 1952), What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (Robert Aldrich, 1962), and Camelot (Joshua Logan, 1967). To build demand, the DVD editions of all three movies will be put on moratorium starting December 31, 2010.

This Week on Blu-ray - November 29-December 5

It's the week after Thanksgiving. Household budgets are depleted and shelves are full with newly (and cheaply) acquired content. Not surprisingly, the week's release slate is thiner than usual, and its main day-and-date titles include two of the most notable box office disappointments of the summer, which proved that not even Jerry Bruckheimer and Tom Cruise are above an occasional misstep or two.

Ocean Film Trilogy 3D Blu-ray Announced

3D Entertainment Distribution, the marketing and theatrical sales arm of 3D Entertainment Films, has announced that it has entered into an agreement with Universal Pictures International Entertainment to release its underwater 3D film trilogy on Blu-ray 3D disc in several countries (excluding North America) this Christmas. The trilogy, presented by ocean explorer Jean-Michel Cousteau, features Ocean Wonderland 3D, Sharks 3D and Dolphins and Whales 3D: Tribes of the Ocean narrated by Daryl Hannah, which have generated over $85 million at the IMAX theatre box office to date.

Magnolia Home Entertainment has announced Night Catches Us for Blu-ray release on February 1, 2011. This drama, about a former Black Panther who returns to his neighborhood, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. It will have a limited theatrical release on December 3.

Magnolia Home Entertainment has announced Monsters for Blu-ray release on February 1, 2011. In this British low-budget science-fiction film, alien life forms spread south of the US after a NASA probe crash-lands in Central America. A digital copy will be included with the BD.

Top Gear Seasons 14 and 15 Announced on Blu-ray

Warner Home Video, in conjunction with BBC Video, has announced Top Gear: The Complete Season 14 and Top Gear: The Complete Season 15 for Blu-ray release on February 15, 2011. These were the first seasons of this long-running British motoring TV show to be shot in high definition. Season 14 will consist of three discs, whereas Season 15 will have two. Other release details are pending.
