Redbox Passes Netflix in Physical Rentals

Posted February 24, 2011 05:03 AM by Juan Calonge

During January, Redbox first took the overall lead in physical media rentals, with about 35% of the market. Netflix, the former disc rental leader, accounted for approximately 30%, tied with brick-and-mortar stores (including Blockbuster). Analysts expect this trend to continue. No specific Blu-ray percentages were released.

Russ Crupnick, entertainment industry analyst for NPD, said that Redbox "has done an outstanding job of meeting consumer needs for a 'blended' shopping experience." He added: "So long as consumers can find something in the kiosk that they'd like to watch, they don't need to choose from a massive library, and the kiosk experience works quite well."
