Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood Blu-ray Discontinued in the UK

Manga Home Entertainment has announced today that it will discontinue Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood on Blu-ray. Manga had released so far two FMA titles in the UK: Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Part One in August and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Part Two just one week ago. This "difficult decision" has been caused by "the high production costs of producing the series on Blu-ray and the disappointingly low sales of Part 1 and 2 on the format."

Wolfe Video Enters Blu-ray, Announces A Marine Story

Wolfe Video, an independent label and distributor specialized in gay and lesbian titles, has announced its first Blu-ray title for release on March 1: A Marine Story, a drama about a female Marine Major who suddenly finds herself on the outs with the Marine Corp over "unbecoming" allegations, and becomes the mentor of a troubled young woman.

Amazon Reveals Blu-ray Lightning Deal Calendar and Vote

Like it did during Black Friday week, Amazon has revealed a full schedule of the Lightning Deals it will hold between Monday, Dec. 13 and Friday Dec. 17, featuring many Blu-ray titles. Additionally, Amazon customers will be able to vote for the limited-edition Blu-ray set they want to see discounted to $14.99 on Thursday, December 16.

Get Low Blu-ray Announced

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced Get Low for Blu-ray release on February 22, 2011. This independent drama, based on a true story, stars Robert Duvall as a Tennessee recluse who planned his own funeral while he was still alive so he could enjoy it. It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and had a limited theatrical release.

My Soul to Take Blu-ray Announced

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced My Soul to Take for Blu-ray release on February 8, 2011. This horror film, directed by Wes Craven, was shown in (converted) 3D when it opened in US theaters in October, but the studio has not announced a 3D Blu-ray release at the moment.

Bambi Diamond Edition Blu-ray Detailed

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has officially announced and detailed the Blu-ray release of Bambi, which as previously reported will come out in a Diamond Edition BD/DVD pack on March 1, 2011. This will be the first Disney BD with the new "Second Screen" technology, which according to the studio "will further transform the at-home movie watching experience by empowering viewers with the ability to engage with film content on multiple media platforms and bring them to life in their own hands at the touch of a button."

Blu-ray Player Sales Up 50% in Black Friday Week

According to The NPD Group, sales volume of Blu-ray players during Black Friday week set a record, with more than 400,000 players sold during the week ended November 28, up more than 50% from the same period last year. Sales of 3D Blu-ray players were also remarkably strong.

Pulp Fiction Blu-ray a Priority for New Miramax CEO

Mike Lang, the new chief executive of Miramax Films, said Thursday that one of his top priorities as a CEO was releasing Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction on Blu-ray. He also said that he'll focus boosting sales of the titles in the Miramax library while looking for partners to make new films.

UK Consumers Like Double/Triple Play Blu-ray Packaging

According to a survey recently commissioned by the British Video Association (BVA), using the "Double Play" or "Triple Play" definitions on the packaging of a Blu-ray, as well as an additional sticker for clarity, is the formula that performs best in terms of consumer understanding. The findings also reveal that, when this packaging formula is followed, consumers are more likely to feel they are receiving value for money from the product.

Blade Runner Single-disc Blu-ray Announced

Warner Home Video has announced that, on January 4, 2011, it will release Blade Runner: The Final Cut. This cult science-fiction movie directed by Ridley Scott had been released on Blu-ray in 2007, in two different editions: a 5-Disc Complete Collector's Edition and an Ultimate Collector's Edition. This new release will include only disc one of those existing editions. It will have a list price of $24.98.

Memories of Matsuko Blu-ray Announced

Tying in with the UK theatrical release of Confessions (Japan's 2010 submission for the Oscars), Third Window Film has announced that it will release Tetsuya Nakashima's earlier movie Memories of Matsuko on Blu-ray on February 14, 2011. Confessions, in turn, is tentatively set for BD release on April 11.

I’m Still Here UK Blu-ray Announced

Optimum Home Entertainment has announced the Blu-ray release of I'm Still Here, with a street date of January 10, 2011. This documentary/mockumentary, directed by Casey Affleck, follows Joaquin Phoenix as he announces his retirement from acting in the fall of 2008 and sets off to reinvent himself as a hip hop musician. It premiered at the Venice Film Festival, and opened in UK cinemas in September.

BBC Video, in conjunction with Warner Home Video, has announced Doctor Who: A Christmas Carol for Blu-ray release on February 15, 2011. This Dickens-inspired Doctor Who adventure will air on BBC America on December 25 at 9 p.m. EST. Disc details and special features have not been revealed at this time.

HBO Home Entertainment, in conjunction with Warner Home Video, has announced Treme: The Complete First Season for Blu-ray release on March 29, 2011. This series from the creators of The Wire is set in New Orleans, in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The first season's ten episodes will be presented in four discs.

According to Nielsen VideoScan, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse was the top-selling title on Blu-ray during the week ended December 5, even though it was released on Saturday, December 4. The BD podium was completed with two Disney titles, with The Sorcerer's Apprentice at number 2 and Fantasia 2 Movie Collection at number 3. Update: sales charts and figures added.

This comedy/drama, based on a novel by Ned Vizzini, stars Keir Gilchrist, Zach Galifianakis and Emma Roberts. It premiered at the 2010 Toronto Film Festival and opened in US theaters in October.

Separately, the etailer is also offering an $8 discount if you buy two qualifying Blu-ray titles. At the moment, the list of eligible titles consists of 35 movies from the Universal catalog, prominently also including the Back to the Future box set. Thes offers are available for a limited time, although no specific expiration date is given.

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, in conjunction with MGM Home Entertainment, has announced Raging Bull: 30th Anniversary Edition for Blu-ray release on January 11, 2011, in a BD/DVD combo. This Martin Scorsese movie had already been released on Blu-ray in 2009. This new edition boasts over 50 minutes of brand-new features.

This Week on Blu-ray - December 6-12

Two of the highest-grossing movies of the year are getting a Blu-ray release this week: Christopher Nolan's action thriller Inception and Dreamworks Animation's closure for the Shrek saga, Shrek Forever After. In the meantime, Criterion is releasing a couple of fairly disturbing movies by David Cronenberg and Guillermo del Toro. All in all, there is something for everyone.

Guillermo del Toro to Sign Copies of Cronos Blu-ray

To support the Blu-ray release of Guillermo del Toro's Cronos by The Criterion Collection, the filmmaker will be signing copies of the movie today at the Amoeba Music store in Hollywood. Following the signing, a special screening of the movie Cronos, as well as Del Toro's never-before-seen horror short film, Geometría, will be held at the Los Angeles film school at 8 p.m.

Saw The Final Chapter 2D and 3D Blu-ray Announced

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has announced the Blu-ray release, on January 25, 2011, of the latest (and officially last) installment of the Saw series, initially titled Saw VII, renamed as Saw 3D when it opened in theaters in late October and now coming out as Saw: The Final Chapter (no pun intended) for home video. It will be available in two unrated BD releases –– one in 2D and the other in 3D –– priced at $39.99 and $49.99, respectively. Each will also include a DVD and Digital Copy of the movie.

Waiting for “Superman” Blu-ray Announced

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced Waiting for "Superman" for Blu-ray release on February 22, 2011. In this documentary about the American public-education system, from the director of An Inconvenient Truth, won the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival. In a novel initiative, every Blu-ray will include a $20 gift card to donate to a local school.

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy will be released at all retailers on March 15, 2011. This Will Ferrell comedy had been previously released on August 31, 2010, as a Best Buy exclusive two-disc "Rich Mahogany" edition. From the information released, it follows that the general release will lack the second disc and the collectibles.
