Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Criterion Starts "Three Reasons" Blu-ray Trailers

The Criterion Collection is now creating short "Three Reasons" trailers for selected upcoming Blu-ray titles from that label. Each expresses three reasons why, in Criterion's opinion, the film featured is a must-see. The first up are for Sweet Smell of Success (due out February 22), The Times of Harvey Milk (March 22), and Topsy-Turvy (March 29).

The Stranger Blu-ray Announced

Film Chest and Virgil Films & Entertainment (formerly Arts Alliance America) have announced The Stranger, Orson Welles' Oscar-nominated 1946 classic, for release in a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack on February 15. Digitally restored in high definition from original 35 mm film assets, The Stranger is presented with an aspect ratio of 4:3 and original sound, as well as a new 5.1 surround sound mix.

New Feature: Become a Fan (Update)

You can now become a fan of any movie, director or actor in the Blu-ray database. The Blu-ray movies in your collection say something about what Blu-ray releases you like, but by becoming a fan of a movie/actor/director you state that it's one of your favorite movies/actors/directors, which is a much stronger statement than simply having a title in your collection. Please note that by becoming a fan of a movie, you are a fan of the actual movie and not a specific Blu-ray release.

Taxi Driver 4K Restoration to Screen in Berlin Ahead of Blu-ray

In February, the Berlin Film Festival will screen a 4K digital restoration of Martin Scorsese's cult film Taxi Driver. Writer and director Paul Schrader, who wrote the screenplay for the movie, will present the restored version at the world premiere in Berlin together with Grover Crisp, senior VP for restoration and mastering of Sony Pictures. A Blu-ray release has not been formally announced yet, although a German release is slated for April.

Argento’s Cat O’ Nine Tails Blu-ray Coming Up

Fangoria has the scoop on the next Blu-ray title coming up from Blue Underground. After Deep Red, the independent label will release another Dario Argento film, the 1971 horror thiller The Cat O' Nine Tails, starring James Franciscus and Karl Malden, which has a street date of May 25. It will be transferred from the original uncut camera negative

Warner Home Video has announced four animated titles for Blu-ray release on April 5: Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker and the more child-friendly Scooby-Doo: Aloha Scooby-Doo!, Scooby-Doo and the Cyber Chase and Tom and Jerry: The Fast and the Furry.

Blu-ray Sales, Jan.17-23: Takers Grab Number One

The action thriller Takers was the top-selling title on Blu-ray during the week ended January 23. The top three places in the chart were filled by titles from Sony Pictures, with The Social Network dropping to second place and Salt shooting back up to third place.

Dogtooth Blu-ray from Kino

Kino Video has announced that it will release Dogtooth (Kynodontas; Yorgos Lanthimos, 2009) on Blu-ray on March 29. This darkly comedic, highly allegorical film about a family raised in absolute seclusion, was listed yesterday as one of the nominees to the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. The studio was initially going to release it on DVD only, but in response to the vocal reaction from enthusiasts on Kino's Facebook page, a BD will also be available.

The Next Three Days Blu-ray Announced

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has announced The Next Three Days for Blu-ray release on March 8, on a BD/DVD/Digital Copy combo pack. This action thriller, a remake of a 2007 French film, is directed by Paul Haggis and stars Russell Crowe, Elizabeth Banks and Liam Neeson. Despite such a high-profile cast and director, it only grossed $21 million at the box office.

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced the romantic comedy/drama Love & Other Drugs for Blu-ray release on March 1. From director/producer Edward Zwick and based on the best-selling book Hard Sell: The Evolution of a Viagra Salesman by Jamie Reidy, Love & Other Drugs stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway. A digital copy will be included.

127 Hours Blu-ray Announced

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced 127 Hours for Blu-ray release on March 1. Based on true events and nominated for six Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Actor (James Franco), 127 Hours follows Aron Ralston, a dare-devil outdoorsman who gets trapped under a boulder while canyoneering alone in the Utah mountains. A digital copy will be included.

Papillon Blu-ray Announced

Warner Home Video has announced yet another 1970s classic for Blu-ray release. In this case, it's Papillon, starring Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman, based on the true story of Henri "Papillon" Charričre. It will come out on May 24 in a Blu-ray book edition, with a 32-page booklet including information, archival photos and an examination of the controversy surrounding the story.

The King’s Speech Blu-ray Coming Up

An early announcement to retailers indicates that Anchor Bay Home Entertainment will release The King's Speech on Blu-ray on April 19. This movie about King George VI of England (played by Colin Firth in an Golden Globe-winning performance) has just been announced to be nominated for twelve Academy Awards: Best Picture, Directing, Leading Actor (Colin Firth), Supporting Actor (Geoffrey Rush), Supporting Actress (Helena Bonham Carter), Original Screenplay, Art Direction, Costume Design, Cinematography, Film Editing, Original Score and Sound Mixing.

The Saw franchise hit its commercial peak with Saw II and Saw III, both of which topped $80 million at the box office and established the franchise as one of the horror icons of this early 21st century. However, subsequent installments were less successful. It took 3D (with its higher ticket prices) to give Saw: The Final Chapter a relative shot in the arm.

Severin Films has announced Birdemic: Shock and Terror for Blu-ray release on February 22. This love story/ horror shocker/ecological movie is an ultra-low budget homage to Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds. Its sequel, Birdemic II: The Resurrection, is being readied for theatrical release in 2011.

Tangled 3D Blu-ray and Regular Blu-ray Announced

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has officially announced Tangled for Blu-ray release on March 29. It will be presented both in a BD/DVD and a BD/3D BD/DVD/Digital Copy combo pack, thus becoming the Mouse's first animated title to debut day-and-date on Blu-ray 3D. This reimagining of the Rapunzel fairytale earned a healthy $186 million at the domestic box office, and over $400 million globally.

This action thriller, starring Won Bin (Mother, Tae Guk Gi: The Brotherhood of War) as a "desperate man out to save a little girl from drug runners, was South Korea 's highest grossing film of 2010. Audio tracks include the original Korean and a brand new English-language dub.

I Love You Phillip Morris Blu-ray Announced

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has announced I Love You Phillip Morris for Blu-ray release on April 5. This movie, based on a true story, stars Jim Carrey as an upstanding citizen who realizes he is gay, becomes a conman and falls in love with the titular Phillip Morris, played by Ewan McGregor. Its US release hit multiple delays amid legal battles between rights owners and distributors, and finally opened in a limited release in December 2010.

Blue Velvet Deleted Scenes Found, Soon on Blu-ray

During a recent radio interview, David Lynch revealed that the deleted scenes from his 1986 masterpiece Blue Velvet, which for a long time were thought to be lost forever, had recently been found "somewhere up in Seattle." Lynch said that "hopefully" some of those scenes will end up in an upcoming Blu-ray (although he also noted that some of them "aren't worth putting back together"). It will also feature a brand-new 5.1 mix supervised by Lynch and his sound engineer Dean Hurley.

Trio of Lionsgate Blu-ray Titles Exclusively at Best Buy

On February 1, Best Buy will offer exclusively three Blu-ray titles from the Lionsgate catalog: the Oscar-winning documentary The Cove (Louie Psihoyos, 2009); The Rules of Attraction (Roger Avary, 2002); and Still Waiting… (Jeff Balis, 2009). Disc details and the length of this exclusivity period have not been disclosed.

Anchor Bay Entertainment has announced Dinoshark for Blu-ray release on April 26. Like Sharktopus (slated for BD release on March 15), Dinoshark is a Syfy Channel original movie "presented by Roger Corman." It stars Eric Balfour and Iva Hasperger, and features Corman himself as "the world's only expert on the Dinoshark."

An early announcement to retailers indicates that 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment will release five family titles from its catalog on Blu-ray on March 22, : Anastasia (Don Bluth/GaryGoldman, 1997), Because of Winn-Dixie (Wayne Wang, 2005), Flicka (Michael Mayer, 2006), Robots (Chris Wedge/Carlos Saldanha, 2005) and The Sandlot (David M. Anchor Bay UK has announced Black for Blu-ray release on February 14. The directorial debut from Pierre Laffargue, Black is a neo-Blaxploitation movie starring French hip-hop artist MC Jean Gab'1 (District 13/District 13 - Ultimatum) as an anti-hero traveling from Paris to West Africa and the Senegalese capital of Dakar in order to pull off the biggest score of his criminal career.

Apparently today is Retailer Exclusivity Day. Sony Pictures' animated cult movie Heavy Metal, initially announced for Blu-ray release on January 25 and later cancelled, is now available for preorder exclusively at Best Buy, with a release date of February 1.

Another Best Buy Blu-ray Exclusive: Manchurian Candidate 1962

Best Buy has secured the exclusivity for another catalog title, this time from the MGM/UA catalog: the original John Frankenheimer version of The Manchurian Candidate, starring Laurence Harvey and Frank Sinatra, which is already up for preorder, with a release date of May 3 and a price of $16.99. Cameron Crowe's award-winning semi-autobiographical look at the world of 1970s rock music will be presented in its longer "bootleg cut," with a 162-minute run time. It carries a list price of $24.99, and is now up for preorder for $19.99.
