In Las Vegas today at the launch of his new venture, Cameron-Pace Group, James Cameron predicted that in five years all Hollywood productions would have an element of 3D in them. CEO Vincent Pace said "2D viewing would need to be just as good as a 2D production, with no compromise." Which both believe is best way of expanding 3D into the broadcast television beyond sporting events.
Cameron believes that a major stumbling block to 3D was created when consumer electronics companies went ahead with 3D expansion before the content was available and created a "content gap". He went on to say that once autostereoscopic TVs without the need for glasses became widely available the adoption curve would "go ballistic" and that passive 3D TVs which only require cheap, disposable glasses will also help adoption.
Pace said at the announcement that, "broadcasting will be the future of 3D, we are going to turn it into something that is really a revenue stream" indicating that he and Cameron believe that the next big money maker for TV and Cable companies is 3D. Their company CPG hopes to enable those companies to make a lot of money from 3D content.
The 3D world as Cameron describes it is one I would love to be a part of and 3D Blu-ray is going to play a big part of that future. One can only hope that the biggest 3D movie of all time,
Avatar, will go on general sale in 3D some time soon.
