After a poor start to the generation marred by high prices and a lack of content, Sony have showed a stunning about turn in their games console unit. Since the launch of the new slimline unit in August 2009 the unit has gone from strength to strength. In 2010 the PS3 system was updated via firmware for 3D capability. The PS3 today is almost unrecognisable from the PS3 that launched in 2006 because of these software updates. PS3 users have, over the course of five years, received a number of updates including DivX and WMV support in version 2.10, BD Profile 2.0 support in version 2.20, DTS-HDMA support in version 2.30, 3D gaming ability in 3.30 and most recently 3D Blu-ray in version 3.50.
The PlayStation division has also had a fiscal turnaround. From losing billions of dollars over the first three years it now turns a regular profit which will enable Sony to ensure its continued long term support of SCE financially.
PS3 won the high definition optical format warWhen PS3 launched in 2006 at the high price of $599 many things were said about it, but one major talking point was its ability to play Blu-ray Discs. This fact helped Blu-ray win countless weekly battles against the lesser supported HD DVD and eventually lead to Warner Bros. backing Blu-ray as the sole high definition format for the future. Now at $299 the PS3 still represents one of the best Blu-ray players available and with price points below $299 still to explored it may yet prove useful at pushing Blu-ray and 3D Blu-ray towards the lucrative gamers market and beyond.
Sony have also used the PS3 to move into the casual gaming market, one which has proved more difficult for Blu-ray to reach on its own. With casual gamers buying up 8m PlayStation Move controllers it represents a new market for Blu-ray and 3D Blu-ray to conquer and PS3 will help with Blu-ray adoption amongst less likely people.
Sony will release their full fiscal results in the middle of May when we will get a peek at their plans for 2012 including how many PS3, Blu-ray players and 3D TVs they intend to ship over the coming year.
