Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Two More Cult Classics From Shout Factory in July

Independent distributors Shout Factory have revealed that they will release two more cult classics on Blu-ray on July 12th: Damnation Alley (Jack Smight, 1977) and Battle Beyond the Stars (Jimmy T. Murakami, 1980), which will be part of the distributor's Roger Corman's Cult Classics collection. Exact technical specs, special features, and region coding status for these releases are unknown at the moment. Street date is: July 12th.

Dinocroc vs. Supergator Blu-ray Announced

Anchor Bay Entertainment have announced that they will release on Blu-ray the ultimate Monster (S)Mash: Dinocroc Vs. Supergator, from Oscar-winning executive producer Roger Corman. Dinocroc Vs. Supergator reunited Corman with cult star David Carradine (Death Race 2000, Kill Bill), in one of his final performances. Street date is July 12th.

20th Century Fox have announced that they will release David M. Matthews' N-Secure (2010) on Blu-ray on June 14th. This no-holds-barred drama has become a cult favorite and features a star-studded cast headlined by Cordell Moore (Diary of a Mad Black Woman), Essence Atkins (Are We There Yet?), Denise Boutte (Meet the Browns), and Lamman Rucker (Why Did I Get Married Too).

More Yasujiro Ozu Dual Format Edition Releases from the BFI

On 23 May the BFI adds more titles to its ongoing strand, The Ozu Collection with the release of Late Autumn (1960) and An Autumn Afternoon (1962). Presented in Dual Format Editions (a Blu-ray and a DVD disc in one box), each main feature is complemented by an early Ozu film that has never been made available in the UK before.

3D Blu-ray set to grow by 500% according to IHS Screen Digest

IHS Screen Digest have released a report claiming that 3D Blu-ray will grow by over 500% year on year over 2010 to reach 7.5m discs from 1.1m in 2010. Revenue will reach $214m for 3D Blu-ray Discs over the course of 2011 as uptake of the format is driven by increasing 3D TV sales and 3D Blu-ray player sales along with the recently compatible Sony PlayStation 3.

The Lost Bladesman Blu-ray in August

British distributors Icon Home Entertainment have revealed that they are planning to release on Blu-ray The Lost Bladesman (2011), starring martial arts superstar Donnie Yen (Ip Man, Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen) and Andy On (Mad Detective), on August 8th. The film is directed by the creative duo Felix Chong (Once a Gangster) and Alan Mak (Infernal Affairs), and is set to premiere in theaters across the UK on April 28th.

In an early announcement to retailers, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment have revealed that they will bring four popular catalog titles to Blu-ray on June 28th. The titles are: Joe Johnston's Jumanji (1995), Jon Favreau's Zathura: A Space Adventure (2005), and Rob Minkoff's Stuart Little (1999) and Stuart Little 2 (2002). Special features, technical specs, and the region coding status of these releases are unknown at the moment.

The Decline of the American Empire Blu-ray Coming Up

Canadian distributors Paradox have revealed that they will release acclaimed director Denys Arcand's The Decline of the American Empire on Blu-ray on June 14th. In 1986, the film won Best Canadian Feature Film and People's Choice Awards at the Toronto International Film Festival. A year later, the film was nominated for Oscar in the Best Foreign Language Film category. Technical specs for this release are unknown at the moment.

Taxi Driver Blu-ray for the UK in June

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release Oscar winner Martin Scorsese's (Best Director, The Departed) classic of modern cinema, Taxi Driver, on 6th June 2011 -- for the first time on Blu-ray -- in celebration of the landmark film's 35th anniversary. This powerful, angst-ridden urban drama was nominated for four Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress and Best Score (1976) and features Oscar-favorites Robert De Niro (Raging Bull, Goodfellas) and Jodie Foster (The Silence of the Lambs, The Accused) in career-defining performances.

Classic Paramount Titles From Legend Films in May

Legend Films, who are known for licensing classic catalog titles from Paramount Pictures, have revealed that they will release on Blu-ray a total of six films, as double packs, on May 3rd. The films are: Houdini (George Marshall, 1953), Those Daring Young Men and their Jaunty Jalopies (Ken Annakin, 1969), The Skull (Freddie Francis, 1965), The Man Who Could Cheat Death (Terence Fisher, 1959), Student Bodies (Mickey Rose, 1981), and Jekyll & Hyde Together Again (Jerry Belson, 1982).

The Stunt Man Blu-ray Announced

In an early announcement to retailers, independent distributors Severin Films have revealed that they will release Richard Rush's The Stunt Man (1980) on Blu-ray on June 7th. The film was nominated for three Oscars, including Best Director and Best Actor in a Leading Role (Peter O'Toole). Technical specs for this release are unknown at the moment.

What Women Want...in Hong Kong

Hong Kong-based distributors Panorama have announced that they will release Chen Da-Ming's What Women Want a.k.a I Know a Woman's Heart (2011) on Blu-ray on April 21. As the title reveals, this is a remake of Mel Gibson's popular romantic comedy. Starring Gong Li (Raise the Red Lantern, 2046) and Andy Lau (Infernal Affairs, Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame).

Criterion Blu-ray in July: Cocteau, Melville, Leigh, Ray, Kurosawa, Solondz

The Criterion Collection has announced six titles for Blu-ray release in July. On July 12th, the independent studio will release Naked (Mike Leigh, 1993). A week later, it will release The Music Room (Satyajit Ray) and Beauty and the Beast (Jean Cocteau, 1946). And finally, on July 26th it will release High and Low (Akira Kurosawa, 1963), Léon Morin, Priest (Jean-Pierre Melville, 1961), and Life During Wartime (Todd Solondz, 2010).

Sony Ship 50m PS3s Worldwide, 8m PS Move Controllers

Sony have today announced that they have shipped 50m PS3 units worldwide. They also confirmed that they have shipped 8m PlayStation Move controllers, which includes PlayStation Move bundles and standalone controllers, but not the Navigation controller and PS Eye. They also said that there are 75m PSN accounts on PS3, PSP, Qriocity and the official PlayStation forums.

Rumor: Nintendo Planning Wii Successor, Could Use Blu-ray

Sources have told Blu-ray.com that the next home console could be unveiled by Nintendo at E3 and should use Blu-ray as the optical storage format. The successor to the Wii is also rumoured to be more graphically powerful than the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 systems. A Blu-ray drive would be seen as the natural progression from the DVD drive currently in the Wii.

James Cameron Predicts 3D to Dominate Hollywood in Five Years at NAB

The much loved film-maker has predicted that all Hollywood movies will be shot in 3D within five years at NAB in Las Vegas at the launch of his new venture. He says that once 3D adoption in Hollywood has been completed autostereoscopic and passive 3D TVs will enable rapid adoption of 3D in home theaters and living rooms.

Imamura and Epstein Films From Eureka Entertainment in June

British distributors Eureka Entertainment have revealed that they are planning to release Jean Epstein's Coeur fidèle a.k.a The Faithful Heart (1923) and Shôhei Imamura's Pigs & Battleships (1961) on Blu-ray on June 27th. Both releases will be Dual Format Editions. The Imamura release will also include the Japanese director's debut film, Stolen Desire (1958).

Sony and AMD Join to add OpenCL and 3D to Sony Vegas Pro 10.0

Sony Creative Software have teamed up with AMD to enable GPU encoding of AVC content using the OpenCL API. This will give professionals and prosumers faster a workflow when using AMD chipsets compatible with OpenCL. The update will also enable MVC and MPO file format workflow for 3D Blu-ray support along with native support for the XDCAM -PMW-500 camcorder for professionals.

Animating humans is tricky business. If you animate them too realistic, the human brain will be overly critical of the image and the viewer will not be able to emerge him/herself into the story. If the models aren't realistic enough, then the audience would be unable to connect with the lead character. Pixar was able to find that happy medium, allowing viewers to emerge themselves into story of an aged superhero looking to return to glory while identifying the his vulnerabilities of being a father. Today, Disney is releasing The Incredibles on Blu-ray, a classic in its own right for both technical achievement and story.

Deep Red Blu-ray in April (Update)

Fangoria has the scoop that Blue Underground will release Deep Red (Profondo rosso) on Blu-ray on April 26. This Dario Argento cult horror film will be presented in its uncensored English-language version, and (exclusive for the BD) an exclusive full-length Italian-language director's cut, both newly transferred in high definition from the original camera negative.

Onkyo today announced their first 3D Blu-ray player and several new home theater items. The new BD-SP309 will play Full HD 3D content and stream advanced lossless codecs via HDMI. It comes with two USB ports (one on the front the other on the back) for external storage connectivity and has on demand internet services including Pandora, NetFlix and VUDU via the Ethernet port or the UWF-1 wireless dongle.

Awareness of 3D TVs and 3D Blu-ray Growing in the USA According to NPD Group

The NPD Group released new information regarding 3D awareness via their 3D 360º Monitor. It showed that awareness of both 3D Blu-ray and 3D TVs has increased significantly. However, the news was damped by raised concerns about aversion to 3D glasses and the price premium that 3D technology carries. With autostereoscopic TVs coming this year from major consumer electronics companies the first concern may be allayed, but as they come with a more significant price premium the second concern could hold up 3D take up until that premium is eliminated.

The film stars Italian beauty Eleonora Rossi Drago (Michelangelo Antonioni's Le Amiche; Valerio Zurlini's Estate violenta).
