Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

It's difficult to imagine that educational programming would represent some of the best selling Blu-ray content, but that is exactly what BBC's Natural History Unit has managed to accomplish with their epic and jaw-dropping films. Today Warner is releasing their latest accomplishment titled Human Planet, which once again explores our planet and exposes it so meticulously, that it is if one has been given plane ticket with no destination or monetary restrictions.

Anchor Bay Entertainment have revealed that they are planning to release award-winning director Julian Schnabel's Miral (2010), starring Hiam Abbass (Paradise Now, The Syrian Bride), Vanessa Redgrave (Blow-Up, Howards End), and Willem Dafoe (New Rose Hotel, Antichrist). Last year, Miral was screened at the Venice Film Festival. Street date is July 12th.

Independent British distributors Revolver Entertainment have revealed that they will release on Blu-ray Adam Deacon and Daniel Toland's urban comedy Anuvahood (2011), starring Femi Oyeniran (Kidulthood, Adulthood) and Ollie Barbieri (TV series Skins). Technical specs and region coding status for this release are unknown at the moment. Street date is July 11th.

Hollywood Directors Come Out Against Premium Release Video on Demand

Yesterday, the day before DirecTV launched their premium video on demand service, major Hollywood directors slammed the plan to make films available through VoD services so soon after their theatrical run. They include Michael Bay, James Cameron, Gore Verbenski and Peter Jackson among 23 influential names. They cite screen competition, commoditization and piracy as their chief concerns.

British distributors Revolver Entertainment have announced that they will release on Blu-ray Rose Bosch's La Rafle a.k.a The Round Up (2010), starring Jean Reno (Leon: The Professional, 22 Bullets), Mélanie Laurent (Inglourious Basterds, The Concert), and Gad Elmaleh (The Valet, Priceless). The film chronicles one of the greatest tragedies in modern French history. Street date is May 30th.

Universal Studios Home Entertainment have announced that they will release Chinese director Tian Zhuangzhuang's The Warrior and the Wolf (2009), starring Maggie Q (Live Free or Die Hard, The King of Fighters) and Jô Odagiri (Shinobi, Tokyo Tower: Mom and Me, and Sometimes Dad). The film is based on a short story by Japanese writer Yasushi Inoue. Street date is June 6th.

Three Favorite Titles From the Ghost in the Shell Series Announced for Blu-ray

From Anchor Bay Entertainment, Manga Entertainment and Bandai Entertainment come three favorite titles from the best-selling Ghost in the Shell series, available on Blu-ray for the very first time. On June 21st, Ghost in the Shell: Solid State Society, Ghost in the Shell: Laughing Man and Ghost in the Shell: Individual Eleven will be released, including digital enhanced and reworked scenes. Terrorism and hackers, intrigue and danger, Section 9 and the mysterious Individual 11 – all will be found in these classic anime adventures. Each of these Blu-rays will be available for an SRP of $34.98.

Warner Home Video have revealed that they will release on Blu-ray four Sylvester Stallone films: Cobra (George P. Cosmatos, 1986), Demolition Man (Marco Brambilla, 1993), The Specialist (Luis Llosa, 1994), and Assassins (Richard Donner, 1995). At the moment, it is unclear what supplemental features will be offered on these releases. Street date is August 16th.

In an early announcement to retailers, Universal Studios Home Entertainment have revealed that they will release Roger Donaldson's Dante's Peak (1997), starring Pierce Brosnan (The Thomas Crown Affair, After the Sunset) and Linda Hamilton (The Terminator, Shadow Conspiracy). In 2010, the film was released on Blu-ray in a number of European countries and Australia. Street date is July 26th.

British distributors Arrow Films have announced that they will release Brian De Palma's Obsession (1976), starring Cliff Robertson (Charly, Brainstorm), Geneviève Bujold (Anne of the Thousand Days, Dead Ringers), and John Lithgow (Terms of Endearment, The Manhattan Project). Harry Potter Magics Way to the Top

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows tops chart for week ending 04/17/11 with 46% of all sales on Blu-ray and six other Potter movies enter the top 20. The newly released movie beat The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader, outselling it at over a 6 to 1 ratio despite only three days of sales being recorded versus seven full days for Narnia. Last week's number one Tron: Legacy moved down three places in the total packaged media sales and just two places on the Blu-ray charts.

NPD: Physical Media Dominates Home Video Watching Habits

The NPD group have released new information via their 'Entertainment trends in America' report which says that physical media is thriving in the home video market. The report indicated that 77% of people watch movies on DVD or Blu-ray for four or more hours per week. That is higher than cable and network television at 68%, theaters at 49% with video-on-demand services at 21% of people.

Essential Killing and Pina Coming to the UK

Independent distributors Artificial Eye have revealed that they are preparing Blu-ray releases for two highly-anticipated films: Jerzy Skolimowski's Essential Killing (2010) and Wim Wenders' Pina (2011). Last year, Essential Killing won the prestigious Grand Special Jury Prize and Volpi Award for Best Actor (Vincent Gallo) at the Venice Film Festival.

Tron Dominates as Blu-ray Sets New Market Share Record

Blu-ray has taken 26% of all packaged media sales for the week ending 04/09/2011. The top selling title is Tron: Legacy where BD made up a stunning 68% of all sales, and next is family title Tangled where the BD share is 33% of all sales. Total revenue hit $46.06m representing year on year growth of over 100% which is the polar opposite of DVD which was only up 5.6%.

Imamura and Epstein Films From Eureka Entertainment in June (Update)

British distributors Eureka Entertainment have revealed that they are planning to release Jean Epstein's Coeur fidèle a.k.a The Faithful Heart (1923) and Shôhei Imamura's Pigs & Battleships (1961) on Blu-ray on June 27th. Both releases will be Dual Format Editions. The Imamura release will also include the Japanese director's debut film, Stolen Desire (1958). Update: Eureka Entertainment have detailed the two releases.

The Assault Blu-ray Announced

French distributors TF1 have announced that they will release Julien Leclercq's L'assaut a.k.a The Assault (2010) on Blu-ray on July 12. The film recreates a true event - the hijacking of an Air France jetliner by four members of the Algerian Armed Islamic Group (AAIG), which was aired live on French TV - that occurred on December 24, 1994. The Assault will have its North American premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival this week.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment announced today the Blu-ray release of the masterful 1957 epic World War II film, The Bridge on the River Kwai, restored and newly remastered for high definition, debuting 6th June 2011. This classic film, among the most prized in the Columbia Pictures catalogue, features William Holden (Oscar Winner for Best Actor, Stalag 17, 1953) and Alec Guinness (Oscar Winner for Best Actor, The Bridge on the River Kwai, 1957) as World War II prisoners whose opposing missions in the Burmese jungle collide with devastating effects.

On May 31, Eagle Rock Entertainment will release a Blu-Ray and a DVD/CD package celebrating one of the seminal albums of the 1990s, Screamadelica by Primal Scream. The Blu-Ray will contain the full Screamadelica Live! concert production as performed by Primal Scream in 2010 at London's Olympia, the first time it had ever been performed in its entirety. Owners of the 70th Anniversary Blu-ray edition of Pinocchio who have sent in their defective disc to Disney for replacement can rest assured. Blu-ray.com staff reviewer Jeffrey Kauffman has now received a replacement disc for Pinocchio and he can confirm the audio has been fixed. It may take a while for your replacement disc to arrive, but be assured once it does, the relatively minor audio issue has been repaired.

When the Academy bestows upon a film the title of "Best Motion Picture of the Year", it is not done so lightly. The King's Speech captured award after award for its heartfelt story of King George VI, his ascension to top of the monarchy, and the speech impediment that nearly pulled him right back down. In fact, it received so many awards for best picture that the Academy is considering moving the Academy Award show earlier in the season so that the winners are less predictable.
