The super-cool new reboot/sequel/whatever-you-want-to-call it brought in a cool $56 million,
which is slightly short of the studio estimate of $60 and well below the opening of the last
two "X"-stallments – 2009's
X-Men Origins: Wolverine made $85 million in its first
weekend and
X-Men:
The Last Stand made a whopping $102.7 million back in 2006. And those two movies
were certifiably awful! Maybe it was the lack of name actors, the period setting, the general
weirdness, but
X-Men: First Class didn't make the impact it should have,
despite being totally awesome.
Last weekend's box office titan, the abysmal
The Hangover: Part II, fell to the #2 spot, with
another $32.4 million. I predicted that this thing would take a huge tumble during its second
week out, once the word got out that it is terrible. And while it did take a big dip – more than
62%, it wasn't an all-time record or anything quite so severe. In fact, it's already nearing the
$200 million mark, which is just $77 million shy of the first film's entire box office haul. Just
know that if you actually paid money for this junk, you're the reason that we'll be forced to
endure
The Hangover, Part III in a couple of years. Oh where will the wolf pack end
up next? WHO CARES.
Speaking of who cares,
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, which
came in at fourth place with another $18 million, has racked up more than $600 million
worldwide, making it the year's biggest movie by far. Good lord.
The only other thing to note is that Woody Allen's fabulous
Midnight in Paris is still killing it in limited
release – with just 147 screens, it has made $6.4 million ($2.9 million from this weekend
alone), which is more than his last movie,
You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger made in
its entire theatrical run. It could end up being one of Woody's biggest hits, if not his biggest.
So I guess that makes the staggering amount of money
