Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Street date is June 28th.

Wind Blast Blu-ray Coming Up

Hong Kong-based distributors Kam & Ronson Enterprises have revealed that they will release on Blu-ray Gao Qunshu's Wind Blast (2010), starring Francis Ng (Exiled, Bullet and Brain), Xia Yu (Shadow Magic), Ni Dahong ( A Woman, a Gun and a Noodle Shop), and Jacky Wu (Invisible Target, Fatal Move). The film tells the story of four cops, two killers, and two fugitives whose paths cross in the deserts of Western China. Street date is May 6th.

Takashi Miike's 13 Assassins Heading to Blu-ray

Magnolia Pictures have announced that they will release on Blu-ray Takashi Miike's highly anticipated new film Jūsan-nin no shikaku a.k.a 13 Assassins (2010), starring Kōji Yakusho (Shall We Dance, The Eel), Takayuki Yamada (Train Man, Vengeance Can Wait), and Yūsuke Iseya (Casshern, Memories of Matsuko). Based on a screenplay by Kaneo Ikegami, the film tells the story of a group of unemployed samurai who must bring down a sadistic lord. Street date is July 5th.

Dumbo Blu-ray Dated

After having appeared on Blu-ray in a number of countries around the world, Dumbo (1941) has finally received an official release date for the U.S. market: September 20th. Blu-ray.com has already reviewed the Mexican Blu-ray release of Dumbo, which contains a number of supplemental features that should appear on the U.S. release as well. Region coding status for this release is unknown at the moment.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 Trailer Released

Warner Bros. have put the trailer for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 online, the film is out July 15th in the USA and UK. David Yates reprises his role as director, and Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint are back as Harry, Hermione and Ron for the final time. The movie marks the end of a decade long franchise for WB and it will be a difficult goodbye for many Harry Potter fans around the world.

Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon Trailer Released

Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks SKG have released the theatrical trailer for Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon. The new entry into the mega franchise is out in theatres on July 1st. It is directed by Michael Bay with Shia LaBeouf, and Josh Duhamel reprising their roles as Sam Witwicky and Maj. William Lennox. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley replaces Megan Fox as the female lead and Steven Spielberg is the Executive Producer.

Olive Films Preparing Sands of the Kalahari for Blu-ray

Olive Films have revealed that they will release on Blu-ray Cy Endfield's Sands of the Kalahari (1965), starring Stuart Whitman (The Comancheros, The Mark), Stanley Baker (Hell Drivers, Zulu), and Susannah York (Tom Jones, They Shoot Horses, Don't They?). The independent distributors also have two other very exciting Blu-ray releases coming up soon: Andrew Marton's Crack in the World (1965) and Burt Kennedy's Hannie Caulder (1971). Street date for Sands of the Kalahari is August 2.

B.B. King: Live Blu-ray Announced

B.B. King's awards are myriad: Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, 15 Grammy Awards, National Heritage Fellowship, Kennedy Center Honors, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom (presented by President George W. Bush). He has been inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame as well as the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and has been ranked by Rolling Stone and Time magazines as #3 on their lists of the greatest guitarists of all time. Smooth and rough, he is the undisputed king of the blues. For over 60 years, B.B. King has created some of the world's most identifiable music, with the help of the silky "Lucille", his trademark Gibson guitar. On July 12th Image Entertainment will release B.B. King: Live, a show that is both concert and celebration.

Original TRON Painting and Prints in Online Charity Auction

Tron and Tron: Legacy star Jeff Bridges is auctioning off an original painting inspired by the Grid to benefit Share Our Strength's No Kid Hungry Campaign. In addition to the original painting, a limited number of signed prints are also being made available to raise funds for the charity. The online auction is currently scheduled to run through May 14, 2011.

Eddie Vedder: Water on the Road on Blu-ray in May

Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder is set to release a new solo album, Ukulele Songs, on Tuesday, May 31st. On the same day, a live concert film directed by Brendan Canty of Fugazi and Christoph Green will be released on Blu-ray. The film, titled Water on the Road, will feature live performances from Vedder's 2008 summer stop at Washington, D.C.'s Warner Theatre. Exact technical specs and region coding status for this release are unknown at the moment.

The Funhouse Blu-ray Announced

British distributors Arrow Films have revealed that they will release on Blu-ray Tobe Hooper's The Funhouse (1981), starring Elizabeth Berridge (Amadeus, Smooth Talk), Miles Chapin (Bless the Beasts & Children), and Shawn Carson (Something Wicked This Way Comes). The distributors have also revealed that this will be a Region-Free release. Street date is July 18th.

Plextor Release New External USB3.0 12x BD-RE Writer

Plextor have released a new USB3.0 12x BD-RE writer. It is capable of writing dual layer BDs at up to 432Mbit/s. It also uses eSATA for faster data transfer, but there is no sign of ThunderBolt for superfast data transfers. It comes bundled with the usual playback and disc creation packages and can play 3D Blu-rays with ease.

The Final Destination 3D Blu-ray Announced

Warner Home Video have announced The Final Destination 3D for release on August 16. This is the second Blu-ray release of the film; the previous edition included an Anaglyph 3D presentation, but did not include a true 3D experience. The Final Destination 3D is also set to offer $8 in Movie Money to see the August 2011 theatrical release of The Final Destination 5, the fifth entry in the successful horror franchise.

Acer Announce New All in One 3D Blu-ray Entertainment Center, Acer Z5763

Acer have announced a new 23" entertainment center that incorporates a full HD 3D, 120Hz screen, a 3D Blu-ray player. It uses Nvidia's 3DVision for full HD 3D pictures powered by an NVIDIA GeForce GT 440. It also includes an Intel Sandy Bridge processors, up to 2TB of storage space and 16GB RAM. The system also uses a new gesture control system similar to Microsoft's Xbox Kinect called AirControl.

PlayStation Network Attacked by Hackers, Data Stolen

On Tuesday Sony released information about the intrusion into the PlayStation Network, detailing which information has been compromised and where to get help. They have also sent out emails to account holders letting them know about the hack. Sony say they are rebuilding the network and expect partial resumption of services within the week and full resumption some time after that.

Blu-ray Sales, April 17-24: Potter Charms Again (Updated)

For the week ending 4/24/11, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 remained on top of the Blu-ray sales chart. Potter had an impressive debut for the Blu-ray format last week, as it managed to generate 46% of total unit sales. The previous Harry Potter release, The Half Blood Prince, obtained a 24% share from Blu-ray sales in its initial week. This week Blu-ray's portion of the overall sales market for Deathly Hallows: Part 1 resulted in a strong 37%. In contrast, The Half Blood Prince only reached 6% of total units sold in its second week of release.

French distributors TF1 Video have announced that they will release Raphaėl Jacoulot's Avant l'aube a.k.a The Night Clerk (2011), starring Jean-Pierre Bacri (The Taste of Others, Look at Me), Vincent Rottiers (I'm Glad That My Mother Is Alive), and Sylvie Testud (Sagan, Lourdes). The film tells the story of a young man with a criminal record who becomes involved in an accidental murder. Street date is July 20th.

Independent British distributors Verve Pictures have announced that they will release on Blu-ray Marc Evans' Patagonia (2010), starring Matthew Rhys (Edge Of Love, Brothers & Sisters) and Grammy Award winning singer Duffy, in her acting debut. The film narrates the journeys of two women - one looking for her past, the other for her future. The film intercuts between their stories, in which one of them travels south to north through the Welsh springtime and the other east to west through the Argentine autumn. Street date is July 11th.

Boyz n the Hood Dated

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment have revealed that they will release on Blu-ray award winning director John Singleton's Boyz n the Hood (1991), starring Cuba Gooding Jr. (A Few Good Men, Judgment Night), Laurence Fishburne (Deep Cover, Hoodlum), and Angela Bassett (Vampire in Brooklyn, Strange Days). In 1992, this gritty urban drama earned Oscar nominations for Best Director and Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen. Street date is July 19th.

Panasonic Extend Avatar Blu-ray 3D Promotion to Players

Panasonic have extended the Avatar Blu-ray 3D promotion to include five 3D Blu-ray players and five Home Theatre systems. Originally the limited edition 3DBD was only available with the purchase of Panasonic Full HD 3DTVs or Panasonic 3D starter kits for their 3DTVs. The popular 3D movie will now be more readily available for both regular and aftermarket buyers.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment have announced that they will release William Kaufman's The Hit List (2011), starring Academy Award Winner Cuba Gooding Jr. (Best Supporting Actor, Jerry Maguire) and Cole Hauser (2 Fast 2 Furious, Pitch Black). The Hit List is a pulse-pounding thriller centered on a down-on-his-luck businessman (Hauser) in a race against time to save the people he unwittingly marked as targets for a professional hit man (Gooding Jr.) Street date is May 10th.

Warner Home Video have revealed that they will release three more highly anticipated films on Blu-ray: Jon Amiel's Copycat (1995), starring Sigourney Weaver (Alien, Death and the Maiden), Holly Hunter (The Piano), and Dermot Mulroney (The Thing Called Love); Barry Levinson's Sleepers (1996), starring Robert De Niro (Taxi Driver), Kevin Bacon (Hollow Man), and Billy Crudup (Waking the Dead, Almost Famous); and Jean-Jacques Annaud's The Name of the Rose (1986), starring Sean Connery (The Rock) and Christian Slater (Mobsters, Kuffs). Street date for all three Blu-ray releases is August 2.

Criterion Blu-ray Sale at Amazon

Online retailer Amazon is currently running a sale on various Blu-ray releases from the Criterion Collection, with prices ranging from $13.99 for individual releases to $28.99 and $52.99 for boxsets. Former Sony Chairman and Media Visionary Norio Ohga Has Passed Away

The man responsible for Sony's transformation from an electronics giant into a multimedia megacorporation has passed away. Norio Ogha pushed Sony into the modern ages and had a vision of a company which owned both electronics manufacturing and media interests. He was responsible for the creation of the Compact Disc, contributed to the DVD and his ideas are central to Blu-ray. He also founded Sony Music Entertainment, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sony Computer Entertainment and is the grandfather of the PlayStation.
