Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Tom and Jerry & The Wizard of Oz Blu-ray

Warner Home Video has announced the Blu-ray release of Tom and Jerry & The Wizard of Oz for August 23rd. The original Warner Bros. animated movie sends classic Hanna-Barbera characters Tom and Jerry to L. Frank Baum's wonderful world of Oz with Dorothy, her dog Toto and her newfound friends, the Cowardly Lion, the Tin Man and the Scarecrow. The 2-disc release is set to include both a DVD and Digital copy of the original movie.

Seth Rogen isn't an action hero, but he plays one on the big screen. Jay Chou isn't a martial arts expert, but he always dreamed of being one. The Green Hornet wasn't a blockbuster hit, but producers thought it would be. Out today on Blu-ray, in both standard and 3D forms, the film attempts to update the now legendary (though, not very popular) television series starring a then relatively unknown Bruce Lee, and succeeds on some levels while completely missing on others.

Blu-ray Disc Sales Up Over 200% for Week Ending 4/16/11

Blu-ray sales for the week ending 4/16/11 are up over 200% while total packaged media sales are up nearly 49%. BD scored 27% market share of total package media sales making it the third week in a row it has beaten the psychological barrier of one quarter of all disc sales and the third record breaking week in a row too.

Weekend Box Office: Fast Five Blows the Tires Off Everything Else

In the ads leading up to the premiere of Fast Five, the fifth in the successful car racing franchise, they promised that "summer starts" on April 29th. And we all rolled our eyes. But after seeing the box office receipts - the sequel brought in a record $86.2 million, well, it's hard to argue with that assessment. The summer did start this weekend. And everybody showed up.

Total Sales of New Discs Down, Blu-ray Up

Home video spending on physical discs down almost 10%, but Blu-ray sales rise 10%. Sales of Blu-ray playback devices (including players, recorders and PlayStation 3s) has risen 13% year on year with the installed base of all such devices hitting the 30m mark. HDTV sales also hit 7m for the quarter with total HDTV penetration at 64.5m households in the USA.

Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes Bullish on Physical Media

Jeff Bewkes has, at the Tribecca Film Festival, reaffirmed his backing for physical media. He says that Blu-ray and 3D Blu-ray have a big role to play over the coming years and the role of physical media has not been diminished by digital downloads. Jeff Bewkes is the CEO of Time Warner Inc., the owners of Warner Bros., New Line and HBO.

Barney's Version Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is set to bring director Richard J. Lewis' Barney's Version to Blu-ray on June 28th. The film delves into the memories of Barney Panofsky (Paul Giamatti), an outspoken sixty-five-year old television producer and self-proclaimed hockey fanatic who reflects on his impulsive existence. The Blu-ray edition will include a filmmakers' audio commentary, three featurettes and a Q&A with Paul Giamatti and author Annette Insdorf.

French distributors Gaumont have announced that on June 16th they will release on Blu-ray Massy Tadjedin's Last Night (2010), starring Keira Knightley (Pride & Prejudice, Atonement), Sam Worthington (Dirty Deeds, Somersault), Eva Mendes (Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans), and Guillaume Canet (Tell No One, The Key). Last year, the film was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival.

On June 21, Warner Home Video will release a Blu-ray combo pack of Jaume Collet-Serra's high-octaine action drama Unknown (2011), starring Liam Neeson (Seraphim Falls, Chloe), Diane Kruger (National Treasure, Inglourious Basterds), Bruno Ganz (Wings of Desire, Downfall), and Aidan Quinn (Benny & Joon, Legends of the Fall).

Doctor Who: Series Six, Part One Blu-ray

BBC Video has announced the July 19th Blu-ray release of Doctor Who: Series Six, Part One, the next stop on the immortal Time Lord's journey through time, space and reality. In the first of two planned Series Six releases, Matt Smith and Karen Gillan travel to the 1960s, battle an alien invasion, hop aboard a pirate ship in the 17th century, explore a bubble universe at the edge of reality, and encounter strange creatures and familiar foes at every turn. Doctor Who: Series Six, Part Two is scheduled for an early November release.

Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame Blu-ray in June

On June 27th, independent British distributors CineAsia will release on Blu-ray acclaimed director Tsui Hark's Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame (2010), starring Andy Lau (Running on Karma, House of Flying Daggers), Carina Lau (Lady Supercop), Tony Leung Ka-Fai (The Lover), and Li Bing-Bing (A World Without Thieves). Earlier this year, the film won Best Director and Best Actress Awards at the Hong Kong Film Awards.

Sucker Punch Blu-ray Coming Up in the UK

Warner Home Video have revealed that they are planning to release on Blu-ray Zack Snyder's highly anticipated epic action fantasy Sucker Punch (2011), featuring Emily Browning (The Uninvited), Abbie Cornish (Bright Star), Vanessa Hudgens (Bandslam), and Jena Malone (Contact). Technical specs for this release are unknown at the moment. Preliminary street date is July 25th.

Blu-ray has shown very strong momentum over the course of 2010, and it is set to continue into 2011, 3D is also up and predicted to have a big future. Blu-ray sales statistics from IHS Screen Digest, FutureSource and NPD have shown a bright future for Blu-ray and 3D while a more streaming has a more uncertain future as it had the lowest viewing figures of all types of visual media.

Some PlayStation Network Services to Return This Week

Patrick Seybold, Senior Director of Corporate Communications and Social Media at Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA), has issued a press release detailing the region-by-region return of several key PlayStation Network and Qriocity services this week. As expected, a variety of enhancements have been made to system security, including automated software monitoring and configuration management, enhanced data protection and encryption, early detection software, and additional firewalls. The company is also launching a worldwide appreciation program dubbed "Welcome Back."

Lolita and Barry Lyndon Amazon Exclusives

Warner Bros. has announced the individual releases of Lolita and Barry Lyndon on Blu-ray. Both titles are currently available for pre-order exclusively on Amazon.com (for $14.99 and $13.99 respectively), and each one is scheduled to arrive on May 31st, the same day the 10-disc, 9-film Stanley Kubrick Limited Edition Collection lands on store shelves.

Marx Brothers, Jean Cocteau, and Jean Vigo Films on Blu-ray This Summer

An article published in The New York Times yesterday reveals that a number of classic films are set to arrive on Blu-ray this summer. Some are yet to be officially announced, but we believe that the fact that they are mentioned with specific release dates guarantees that the summer will be indeed quite exciting. According to the article, on June 7th the Marx Brothers' The Cocoanuts (1929), Animal Crackers (1930), Monkey Business (1931), Horse Feathers (1932), and Duck Soup (1933) will debut on Blu-ray (Universal Studios), while on August 2 we will see Jean Cocteau's Orpheus (1950) (Criterion) and Jean Vigo's complete works.

BBC Video has announced the 2-disc Blu-ray release of Left Bank Pictures' Zen, the 2011 television series based on late British crime writer Michael Dibdin's detective novels. The three-episode series features "Vendetta," "Cabal" and "Ratking," stars Rufus Sewell (John Adams) and Caterina Murino (The Garden of Eden), and is set for an August 2nd Blu-ray release.

Palisades Tartan have announced that they will release on Blu-ray Olivier Marchal's sizzling crime drama 36 Quai des Orfèvres a.k.a 36th Precinct (2004), starring legendary French actors Gerard Depardieu (Camille Claudel, Cyrano de Bergerac) and Daniel Auteuil (Queen Margot, Girl on the Bridge). Partially based on true events, the film tells the tragic story of two overly ambitious cops. Street date is June 14th.

A Trio of Grindhouse Films Heading to France

French distributors M6 Video have revealed that they will release on Blu-ray a trio of grindhouse films: Joseph Guzman's Run! Bitch Run! (2009) and Nude Nuns with Big Guns (2010), and Kurando Mitsutake's Samurai Avenger: The Blind Wolf (2009). The three films will be part of the company's new Collection Grindhouse series. Technical specs and region coding status for these releases are unknown at the moment. Street date is July 19th.

In a dark future, widespread war has brought humanity to the brink of destruction. Amidst the chaos, a fighter named Jin Kazama (Jon Foo) enters a martial arts tournament to seek revenge on his father Kazuya Mishima (Ian Anthony Dale) and his grandfather Heihachi Mishima (Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa).

Lucasfilm has announced that all will be revealed about the Star Wars Saga Blu-ray sets in 4 days, with an e-mail message sent out pointing to the May the 4th Be with You - Star Wars Countdown page on StarWars.com. With an image from the beginning of the first STAR WARS movie, they encourage people to visit the site on May 4th at 6 AM Pacific Time, where the much awaited details of the upcoming Original Trilogy, Prequel Trilogy and Complete Saga sets are bound to be revealed.

Warner Home Video have announced the Blu-ray release of the Extended Cut of Red Riding Hood for June 14th. The fantasy horror film is directed by Twilight filmmaker Catherine Hardwicke and stars Amanda Seyfried (Jennifer's Body) and Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight). The June 14th release is set to include a standard DVD and Digital copy of the film.

Warner Home Video have announced that they will release on Blu-ray Peter and Bobby Farrelly's Hall Pass (2011), starring Owen Wilson (The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, The Darjeeling Limited), Jason Sudeikis (What Happens in Vegas, A Good Old Fashioned Orgy), Jenna Fischer (Solitary Man), and Christina Applegate (Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead). The release labeled appropriately Enlarged Edition, will include SDVD and Digital copy of the film. Street date is June 14th.

Warner Bros. Addresses Deathly Hallows Disc Problems

The Blu-ray release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1 has been the source of several recent complaints. It seems some consumers are experiencing a number of issues including disk skipping, technical glitches and other anomalies. Those affected are being encouraged to contact the studio by way of an online customer service form. An official exchange program has yet to be announced.

The Lord of the Rings Extended Editions: 3-Night Theatrical Event

To celebrate the upcoming Blu-ray release of The Lord of the Rings Motion Picture Trilogy: Extended Edition box set, Warner Bros. and Fathom Events is releasing the extended edition of all three films in select theaters for a special three-night event. Each film will also include a special introduction from Peter Jackson filmed on the set of The Hobbit. Tickets are limited and currently only available online.
