I saw
Attack the Block
back at this year's South by Southwest Film Festival, where it made its world premiere,
and it immediately shot to the top of my list of not only the best movies at the festival, but also
found it to be one of the best movies of the year. Period.
Written and directed by Joe Cornish (Edgar Wright's co-writer on several upcoming projects), it's
about a group of thuggish London kids who go up against menacing alien beings. Imagine
La
Haine mixed with
The Thing and you've got a pretty good idea about what you're
dealing with.
And you'll be dealing with it sooner than expected – Sony Pictures Classics will roll it out starting
on July 29th. That's the same weekend that big time studio fare like
Cowboys and
Aliens and
The Smurfs debut.
But seriously – this is the movie to beat. It's whip-smart, scary, funny, and a whole lot of
delirious fun. (Plus, it's got a wicked soundtrack co-authored by British dance-poppers Basement
Jaxx.)
I kept thinking about how great a
Super 8/
Attack the Block double feature would be. Now we'll have to
wonder no more!
