Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

British distributors G2 Pictures are preparing a Blu-ray release of Russian director Alexander Kott's The Brest Fortress a.k.a Fortress Of War (2010), staring Andrey Merzlikin, Veronika Nikonova, and Pavel Derevyanko. The film chronicles a true event, the defense of the Brest Fortress, which in 1941 was amongst the first targets the German invaders attacked during Operation Barbarossa. Street date is September 2.

German distributors Koch Entertainment are preparing for Blu-ray release two classic westerns by William A. Wellman: The Ox-Bow Incident (1943), starring Henry Fonda, Dana Andrews, Mary Beth Hughes, and Anthony Quinn, and Yellow Sky (1948), starring Gregory Peck, Anne Baxter, and Richard Widmark. The two Blu-ray releases will be part of the company's new Western Legends in HD series.

Posting on the official PlayStation Blog, SECA Senior Director of Corporate Communications and Social Media Patrick Seybold has outlined the forthcoming "Welcome Back" appreciation program designed for members who were affected by the recent PSN outages. The program will allow PSN customers to select two free PS3 games from a list of five titles (alternatively, PSP owners can select two PSP downloadable games), receive a weekend of free movie rentals, 30-60 days of free PlayStation Plus membership, 100 free virtual items on PlayStation Home, and more.

Weekend Box Office: Audiences Say "I Do" To 'Bridesmaids'

Many had underestimated the audience appetite for the Judd Apatow-produced Bridesmaids, thinking that the modestly budgeted, R-rated rom-com (starring and co- written by Kristen Wiig) would be a "sleeper hit," and that the opening weekend revenue would top out around the $10 million mark. Well, it might not have been enough to topple the mighty Thor, but it made mincemeat out of Fast Five and Priest.

Red Riding Hood: Alternate Cut Blu-ray Detailed

Warner Home Video has revealed a number of details about the upcoming Blu-ray edition of Red Riding Hood: Alternate Cut. The fantasy horror film is directed by Twilight filmmaker Catherine Hardwicke and stars Amanda Seyfried (Jennifer's Body) and Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight). The June 14th release will include theatrical and alternate cuts of the film on a single Blu-ray disc, a standard DVD and Digital copy of the film, and a variety of special features, many of them exclusive to the Blu-ray release.

Revolver Entertainment announced yesterday that they have acquired the UK distribution rights for Brazilian director José Padilha's highly anticipated Tropa de Elite 2 - O Inimigo Agora É Outro a.k.a Elite Squad 2 (2010). Director Padilha's previous film, the controversial Elite Squad, won the Golden Bear Award at the Berlin International Festival in 2008.

French distributors M6 have revealed that they will release on Blu-ray two films by Japanese director Takashi Miike: God's Puzzle (2008) and Zebraman 2: Attack on Zebra City (2010). Earlier this year, Zebraman 2: Attack on Zebra City picked up a Newcomer of the Year Award (Riisa Naka) at the Japanese Academy Awards. Street date is August 10th.

Blu-ray Sales Down on Weak Week 4/30/11

Blu-ray sales for the week ending 4/30/11 are down 44.5%, a larger fall than total packaged media sales for the same period. Revenue for the week was just over $20m and market share was 19%. The fall in market share follows last weeks fall, both of which come after massive record breaking weeks of 25%, 26% and 27% driven by Tangled, Tron: Legacy and Harry Potter 7.

DVD Sales Decrease While Blu-ray Soars

A new report by SNL Kagan confirms that DVD's market share continues its precipitous decline, while Blu-ray sales continue to soar. DVD sales were down 44% year to year from 2009 to 2010, while Blu-ray sales rose 53% in the same period. While DVD continues to outpace Blu-ray in total dollar amounts of revenue—at least for the time being—the handwriting appears to be on the wall for the aging format. DVD sales last year were down over 3 billion dollars from 2009 levels to $4.47 billion. Blu-ray sales for 2010 were over $2.3 billion. SNL Kagan will release a report devoted exclusively to the Blu-ray market in the near future.

For the week ending May 8, The Green Hornet finished on top of the Blu-ray sales chart with 50% of total sales coming from the Blu-ray format. There was time when a 50% stake would make headlines for Blu-ray, but now it has become a weekly occurrence. Three-time Blu-ray weekly sales champ, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 fell one spot to number two, with a 42% Blu-ray share.

Conan the Barbarian Blu-ray

Universal Studios Home Entertainment is set to bring John Milius' Conan the Barbarian to Blu-ray on August 2nd, two weeks before Marcus Nispel's adaptation of the same name descends on theaters. Milius' original film stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as Conan, a slave who sets out to find the sorcerer (James Earl Jones) that murdered his family and people. Early reports indicate the release will include an extended cut of the film and a variety of special features, and point to the concurrent release of the film's 1984, Richard Fleischer-helmed sequel, Conan the Destroyer.
