Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Blu-ray

From Tim Burton (Batman) and Warner Home Entertainment comes the Blu-ray of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory this fall. Burton's 2005 reimagining of Roald Dahl's classic novel, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory stars Freddie Highmore (August Rush) as Charlie Bucket, a poor child who wins a tour of a candy factory run by the eccentric Willy Wonka (Johnny Depp, Rango). The film streets on October 4th.

The full-length, feature film debut of director Tim Burton (Big Fish), Pee Wee's Big Adventure stars Paul Reubens (Life During Wartime) as Pee Wee Herman, a childlike free spirit who embarks on a cross-country journey to retrieve his missing bicycle. Pee Wee's Big Adventure streets on October 4th.

This August, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment brings the drama In A Better World to Blu-ray. Directed by Susanne Bier (Things We Lost in The Fire), In A Better World tells the emotionally charged story of two families navigating through the perils of revenge and forgiveness. The film won the 2011 Academy Award for Best Foreign Film. In A Better World streets on August 30th.

Brave Teaser Trailer

Disney has released the first trailer for Pixar's next animated feature Brave. The film will mark Pixar's first attempt at a fairy tale and first non-sequel since 2009's Up. Brave is slated for a June 22, 2012 release.

Based on author Takafumi Takada's two-volume novel, this anime adventure focuses on a teenager who must travel far into the past in order to help mankind defeat a race of vicious demons. Amazon's weekly Blu-ray Gold Box deal affects the Limited Edition version of The Sound of Music. 20th Century Fox's popular musical centering around the WWII-set exploits of the Von Trapp family, The Sound of Music stars Julie Andrews (Mary Poppins) and Christopher Plummer (The Insider). Through July 2nd, Amazon is offering the Limited Edition Blu-ray of the film for $38.99.

Cabaret Blu-ray

Bob Fosse's legendary Cabaret (1972), winner of eight Oscar awards, including Best Director, Best Actress in a Leading Role (Liza Minnelli), Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Joel Grey), Best Cinematography (Geoffrey Unsworth), and Best Music Adaptation (Ralph Burns), has been set to be released on Blu-ray in France on October 19th. Technical specs and region coding status for this release, however, are unknown at the moment.

This summer, Warner Home Video brings the screen adaptation of author Emily Giffin's Something Borrowed to Blu-ray. Director Luke Greenfield (The Girl Next Door) directs this dramedy about a young woman (Ginnifer Goodwin, Walk the Line) who falls for the fiancé (Colin Egglesfield, Must Love Dogs) of her best friend (Kate Hudson, Almost Famous). The Motorcycle Diaries Blu-ray

An early announcement to retailers indicates that Canadian distributors Alliance Films will release acclaimed Brazilian director Walter Salles' Diarios de motocicleta a.k.a The Motorcycle Diaries (2004) on Blu-ray on August 23. In 2004, the film won the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury at the Cannes Film Festival. A year later, the film also won Oscar for Best Original Song (Jorge Drexler).

The wushu fight film True Legend will arrive on Blu-ray this fall, courtesy of Vivendi Entertainment. Directed by master action choreographer Yuen Woo-Ping (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), True Legend stars Man Cheuk Chiu ( Sacrifice) as Su Qi-Er, a man who perfects the Drunken Boxing martial arts technique as a means of getting revenge against the man who kidnapped his son. True Legend streets on September 13th.

An early announcement to retailers indicates that PBS will release on Blu-ray Ken Burns and Lynn Novick's Prohibition (2011) on October 4th. Prohibition tells the story of the rise, rule and fall of the 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. This six-hour three part documentary also includes over two hours of bonus content.

The Phantom of the Opera (Original) Blu-ray

Milestone Films have revealed that are preparing a Blu-ray release of the original The Phantom of the Opera (1925-1929). This Blu-ray release, which will be distributed by Image Entertainment and is expected to be available for sale in early October, will feature two complete runs of the 1929 version of the film, as well as a standard definition transfer of the original 1925 edit of the film from a tinted 16mm print.

Barbet Schroeder's More Heading to Blu-ray

On September 19th, the British Film Institute will release a Dual Format Edition of Barbet Schroeder's More (1969), starring Mimsy Farmer, Klaus Grünberg, Heinz Engelmann, and Michel Chanderli. Similar to director Schroeder's The Valley, this cult film features a soundtrack composed by the legendary Pink Floyd.

Deep End Collector's Edition Blu-ray

BFI has announced a 3-Disc Collector's Edition of Jerzy Skolimowski's Deep End that will be released alongside the standard Dual Format Edition on 18 July. The 3-Disc Collector's Edition presents all of the contents of the standard Dual Format Edition along with an extra DVD of exclusive content, including footage of Jane Asher and John Moulder-Brown being interviewed onstage at BFI Southbank with BFI curators William.

Blu-ray Sales, June 13-19: Victory for Los Angeles

In the closest finish ever for the No.1 spot on the Blu-ray sales chart, Battle: Los Angeles finished the week on top. Sony's sci-fi actioner might not have delivered box office success, but it did manage to score strong sales for Blu-ray as it dethroned last week's champ True Grit by a margin of only 1%.

Screen Archives has just announced pre-orders are available for 1954's epic The Egyptian, released by niche label Twilight Time. Twilight Time is a partnership between Nick Redman and Brian Jamieson, both of whom have a long history with various Hollywood studios and have been at the forefront of both restorations and specialty releases. The Blu-ray of The Egyptian marks Twilight Time's first foray into high definition.

Weekend Box Office: "Green Lantern" Could Have Used More Green

Warner Bros. big-budget Green Lantern, which cost an estimated $300 million including marketing costs, made a mere $52.6 million. This is a disappointment. Not only was the film incredibly expensive to produce (including Warner Bros. being forced to, late in the game, hire more visual effects houses and inflate the budget by $10 million) but the advertising campaign and promotional tie-ins seemed to be going on for years practically (Green Tea! Get it?)

This reinvention of King Arthur's legend stars Jamie Campbell Bower (Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street) as Arthur, Joseph Fiennes (Enemy at the Gates) as Merlin, and Eva Green (Kingdom of Heaven) as the evil Morgan Le Fay. The first season Blu-ray set streets on September 13th.

Wal-Mart is currently listing for pre-order the MGM catalog titles, When Harry Met Sally, Throw Momma from the Train, A Fish Called Wanda, Legally Blonde, and It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. The Blu-rays will be released courtesy of Fox Home Entertainment as Wal-Mart exclusives on July 5th.
